Anyone who is not ready to get immersed in the crazy culture of New Orleans.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

It's like a different country down here. The drinking age is pretty much understood to be 18.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Loyola University is located in Uptown New Orleans right on St. Charles Avenue. You couldn't find a more perfect college town than New Orleans. The campus size is pretty big and spans a few blocks in uptown N.O. but it's completely walk-able. Many students walk or ride bikes to and from classes.

Describe the students at your school.

Loyola is pretty diverse -- plus it's in New Orleans, which is a melting pot of it's own. Loyola's student body is about 35% minorities, 44% is from out of state and 3% are international students. The male-to-female ratio is about 2:3 (56% girls, 44% guys).

What are the academics like at your school?

The average student-to-faculty ratio at Loyola is 11:1 with class sizes of 22 (typically) so the students and teachers get to know each other. Plus, there are over 300 full-time faculty and of the 91% have a terminal degree -- so the quality of the education is top-notch. Loyola also brings in guest speakers regularly, so there is no shortage of learning outside the classroom. Loyola has an end goal for students, it isn't just learning for the sake of learning. The average class load is anywhere from 12-20 hours so there is time and plenty of opportunity for off-campus internships. Loyola has a career services center that works closely with students to help with job placement. Every year there are over 150 professional businesses and/or grad schools that come on campus to do interviews. In recent years Loyola had graduates who were hired by ABC News, Apple, the LA Times, The Washington Post and Shell Oil Company.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Loyola offers over 100 student organizations to get involved in, including: greek life (6 fraternities, 10 sororities), athletics, student publications, service groups, performing arts and more! . Plus, with Loyola being located in New Orleans there is always something to do at any time, day or night. Loyola has 9 Varsity Sports and is in Division I (NAIA). Athletics is pretty big with just under 50% of both men and women participating in some kind of athletics. Plus, there are performing arts performances and tons more to do on campus.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

A place for those with ambiguous dreams of the future to meet those with strict plans and combine into something wonderful.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My advice to you is to talk to that strange kid in your core curriculum class (he'll end up being the sweetest friend you can make), don't assume. Even if you don't like your roommate, talk to them because they will give you an unbiased view and still feel the same about you as before. On that note, don't room with a friend unless you want to lose them. By the way, that friend you had in high school who was so cool, isn't really that great. It's OK to just be acquaintances. Don't rely on someone from home to be your comfort blanket, you will resent each other. Eat out, study in the library, pick up flyers, read bulletin boards, go to shows, and go to meetings. If it's between a party and writing a paper, write the paper; the party will still be there once you're done, I promise. Know your limits, and take care of those who don't. Call home, your mother misses you. You don't need all that clothing. Remember that life is long and college is short, you are stronger than you know.

What's unique about your campus?

The Best thing about Loyola is that it is the perfect place for those who go there. You fall in love with the campus, the people, everything. Here we learn to think critically and act justly.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Follow your heart. When your doing something you love and know what the future may hold in making that decision, you will have no regrets. As long as you do the work thats involved in succeding in that field. As a music major i am often criticized for my decision on continuing my studies in the music field. But it is my passion and I am confident that I have what it takes to make it. Take advantage of the oppportunities that come your way and network.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I dont think there is anything at my school that i can call the "worst". Everything whether one views it as negative or positive makes Loyola, Loyola. Take away anything it would take away from the essence of why I love the school so much for it to have been my first choice.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

I think anyone can attend this school and feel like it was the best choice for them or they can grow to love it and appreciate it for what it is. Loyola is very diverse so whether you are disabled , of a different religion, or sexual orientation you are bound to feel a sense of belonging. It is a great school academically and socially.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Go with whatever your heart is telling you. Loyola was always my first choice, but I "chickened out" to stay closer to friends, and went to the state school instead. It was probably the worst mistake I've ever made. My gut told me to go to Loyola, but I refused to listen. Luckily, I was able to transfer the following year, and had the best year of my life. I love everything about Loyola, and have since the moment I first toured it four years ago. My love for Loyola University and the city of New Orleans has grown since that time. Financing and scholarships are always available to students and families who need it, so don't let that keep you from achieving your dream.

What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about Loyola University New Orleans is the community atmosphere. Loyola is small enough that students and faculty members know each other.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Anyone not open to change, or to a challenge of his or her personal views should not attend Loyola New Orleans. (Anyone not able or willing to stand up for him or herself, even in the sense of growing). Anyone uncomfortable with a small classroom setting, professors and classmates who know them, or a "family atmosphere" would not fit in at Loyola.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Even though this doesn't come to the forefront of your mind when thinking about college experiences, make sure you pick a college that won't cost you too much out of pocket. Financial expenses can cause a huge amount of stress that ruins the whole experience. Other than money, make sure the campus is comfortable and the student body is relatable.

What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about Loyola is the support you get from classmates. Sure, we all want to beat each other's grades, but if you need help you get it. I have never felt alone while at Loyola.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

My school is best known for it's amazing college of music as well as the college of business.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I would give parents is support your child's passion. As a music major I am very grateful to have been blessed with a family that supports the direction I have planned to take at Loyola University New Orleans. I feel that if a person is truly passionate about something they will succeed in many ways, and some of these successes may not be the practical means of success. The support that a family is able to give their child is the purest and strongest foundation for allowing someone the opportunity to become an amazing person, as well as successful in whatever he/she chooses. The most important thing a parent can do for their child is believe in their child's abilities with all their heart and support them in their first choice university. My advice for students is to always strive to do your best in college. Don't get caught up in the hype of independece and abuse the amazing opportunies and education you are being allowed. Make time for your friends and family, even when times are hectic, because they will always lift your spirits when you're down because they love you.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I made the mistake of only applying to one school. I made the right choice, but remember to keep your options open and apply to as many places as you can.

What kind of person should attend this school?

A person who has great financial need or who is very wealthy. I'm lower middle class/middle class and am still having financial issues. A person who likes a personal learning environment.
