Luther College Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Danielle

The worst thing about Luther would have to be the lack of places to go and do within the community. A majority of activities to do on weekends revolves around alcohol and that is not my thing. There are few places to go in town to do with friends or even to do on campus. I would also have to say the lack of diversity in classes and clubs isn't the greatest. Luther is not a place of extreme diversity.

Kristianna

The promises that Luther College makes you in the beginning because from my experience they do not keep them. They have let me down on many things that they said they would help me with when I first applied.

Christopher

The system for meal transfers is inconvenient, if you miss a meal and want to use your remaining Dining Dollars you can only use them in very short time window and only at certain food areas. Not a huge problem, just a little wrinkle in the otherwise ideal college experience for me.

Christine

Amongst all the great things Luther College has to offer, one thing that I would say it lacks is in its location-- Decorah, IA. Consequently, the rural Iowan town is secluded from major cities by bluffs and fields of corn and soybeans. However, Luther does a great job of hosting plenty of activities on the weekends so students are never found bored for social life.

kyle

The worst thing about Luther college is the cost, because the high price puts alot of stress and worry on ones mind until they find a job or way to pay it off.

Janel

limited area around to do things

Rachel

The off campus housing situation isn't the best. There are not a lot of options for upper classmen.

Jacob

The worst thing about my school is the lack of recognition Luther receives from the residents of Iowa. Perhaps understandably the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa seem to be the most well known schools in the state. Located in small town Decorah Luther College is not well known state wide. As a college that focuses stronlgy on academics Luther College strives for academic success and personal growth. I would like Luther College to receive more recognition throughout the state for its acadmemic history and prominence.

Mallory

The housing is the worst thing. It is mostly on-campus housing, so there is little experience on your own.

Christina

The worst thing about my school is the lack of real world opportunities given to its students in their respective fields of study. The college is tucked away in a small town, so it was difficult for anyone to concurrently be a full time student and gain valuable hands-on experience that employers would look for.

Leslie

The worst thing about my school is it's location. The closest mall/civilization is an hour away, which is a pain when you really want Taco Bell at 11pm.

Sydnie

The worst thing about Luther College is that it is very far away from any large city. The closest large city is Rochester Minnesota, a one hour commute. Some students would say this makes them feel like they are cut off from the world, but other students would say they like being secluded because it creates the unique atmosphere for the school.

Felecia

The rising cost of tuition, and the decrease in financial aid.

Alison

The worst thing about Luther isn't so much about the school, it's about where it is. It's in Decorah, Iowa. About an hour to two hours away in every direction from a city. There is not much to do here, especially if you're not outdoorsy, and especially not in the winter. There are many trails and outdoor adventures you could take, but Decorah quiet. There is a 3-picture movie theatre, a bowling alley, and walmart. You either have to be creative or be willing to drive to have fun here.

Christopher

There is not a lot of school spirit. During sporting events not a lot of students attend. The town really supports Luther's athletic programs but the students do not really show their part in going to the games.

Katelyn

The overall stress and anxiety that looms over the students and professors concerning school work. Students are often pushed past their limits. There is often not enough time in the day to get everything done.

Elise

That our schedule is so different from all the other colleges around.

Sarah

Cost. Without my financial aid, I'd never get in and there is a chance I won't be able to attend next year due to lack of money, and will therefore never graduate or attend graduate school like I want to.

Cate

The town is cute but there is not enough to do on weekends. If you want to have fun, most of us go into Rochester, MN.

Jenna

Although it is absolutely beautiful in the Decorah area, there are limited opportunities outside of school-sponsored activities and nature-oriented activities to do. However, the school works very hard to bring in entertainment and other opportunities in order to challenge students as well as to provide activities that are non-alcohol related.
