What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell myself to enjoy life. Do not rush into getting married at 19 and have the true college experience. Making school a priority over dating can help you in being much smarter and more knowledgeable for your career, which you could achieve much sooner (I took 5 years off of school). Secondly, I would say to choose your friends more wisely and know that you are better than who you let yourself be around. Always take the high road and not to let others make your choices for you, take your own path and run with it. Lastly, I would say to not work so much and definitely make school a higher priority.

There are many things that I would tell myself if I could go back in time. One thing I would definitely tell myself is to not overanalyze things. Life is too short to complicate it. Do what you have to do and be done with it. You never know what may come out of it. Another piece of advice that I would give myself would be not to be nervous going into college. Once you are there everything falls into place. Also, I would tell myself to not be as shy and speak up more. People definitely want to know what you are thinking. I would also tell myself to let go of the past and look forward to the future because it has many great opportunities.

Always ask questions, don't be afriad of your doubts and fear. If you want something bad enough you will get it.

The first day I walked and on campus, I was terrified and did not know what to expect. Back home in Ghana, there is no such thing as a high school or college student owning a car or having that much freedom but a few days later, I realized changes do occur and it is up to the individual to take on the change with an open mind and this I would not have learned if I did not come to Lynn. I am afraid of change mainly due to the fear of the unknown but a professor here at Lynn told me on the second day of my freshman class that "perseverance, commitment, and determination are the three things that will always see you through change." Holding onto those words has brought me this far and my children will hear those words from me and hopefully they will hold onto it them as I did. College has thought me so much and education gives you something to be proud of even if you feel you have failed in your career choice, you will always have college years to look back on and smile with pride.

It shows that anyone can achieve an education through people and today's lessons. You are not a number, you are a person. There are teachers who truly believe that their students can succeed, even the ones who are struggling. They help with tutoring, projects and finals. The students are nice and one of a kind. There will be nobody who is the same personality or physical person. The campus is small, but very close. It's like you have another family.

A sense of accomplishment, and direction in my life. I know what i'm doing and where i'm going in the future. And it looks bright for me. I have meet some nice poeple and some great teachers, it has been a better experience now than what i had in high school. I have a greater respect for education now and know how much a good education means for you andyour future and career. I just wish i would have realized this earlier in life.

Bradley

That whatever is your career, learn it and use it in your everyday life. I learned that in college your are on your own to learn your materials and how to apply it in your profession.

My understanding of the value of a college education has come quite recently while taking a break from school. After attending a four-year school for 2 years I decided to transfer schools since my intended major was not available to me there. Unable to decide on where to attend I ended up moving away with my sister. I have since been working and while the economy has been so bad schools are not accepting students like they used to and now I have become stuck while trying to attend school. This being said I was acceped to one school bringing me closer to my reason for an education. While trying to save up money for school I have become broke. Jobs are not hireing or paying enough for me to be able to save anything. Without any degree or more than a couple years experince in anything it is almost impossible to stay afloat. College is so important , today especially, so that you can live a comfortable life and not have the worries of expenses constanly looming over your head. I can't wait to get back into the swing of studying and classes.

I have realized that you have to be yourself whether people like it or not. You should not have to change for anybody.

I would tell myself that success is based on how you manage your time , and the amount of effort you put forth. Being smart or talented are gifts in life, however those who over achieve putting in a mighty effort surpass those who only need to put minimal effort in completing a task. Another piece of advice that I would give would be to believe in yourself more and understand that failure is not the worst thing on earth. I would recognize that failure is just a wake up call to either get you back on track or to help you view something from a different perspective. My last bit of advise would be to relax when faced with a tough schedule because no matter what happens, before you know it the week will end and all your worries will be behind you. Thinking logically relaxes your mind and allows you to see that you have a lot more time to handle your given task . So instead of complaining about how hectic your schedule is, stay positive and givei everything one hundred perecent. As in the end it is only a figment of your own imagination.

Be confident. Explore all opportunuties. Do everything you want to do and go wherever you want to go.

While highschool was a lot of fun, college is going to be much more work and you need to prepare yourself for the change. Do not slack off or let things get away from you. Show up to every single class and do your work. Thats not to say you wont have any fun, though. You will meet amazing and different people and learn new things about the world and yourself. You will also find the love of your life. So have fun and take lots of pictures because it goes by fast!

Leah

Make sure you visit the school more than once. If you visit it on an atypical day there is no way the student will get a feel for the "real" campus. Also, if given the option, spend a night on campus. This will give the student a chance to meet and talk with people who actually go there. Tour guides are told to say good things about the school--find someone who will be real and tell the truth about the school and campus.

Sarah

Go to the college that when you walk on campus it just feels right. Go to a school with a broad range of majors in case you change your mind.

Lyndsey

I would give a lot of informational advice. I would tell the parents and/or students that it really matters by what college you look at because that is where the student will be spending the next 4 years of their life. You have to focus on the size of the school. Would you prefer a bigger school with 500 students in a lecture hall? Or would you prefer a smaller school with 27 students in one class? You have to look at the activities that are offered that the school. Are you the type to get involved and make a lot of friends? You DEFINIETLY have to look at where you will be living if you are going to live on campus. Will you live in a double, triple, single? With community bath or private? All these questions are very important to consider. The most important is, does this school have your major? Is this school right for you academically? That, to me, is the most important part when looking at schools.

My advice on looking for a proper university for an individual is to explore universities online, and then look at the pros and cons of each one. The decision should be up to the student whom will be attending the university not the parents as the parents are not the ones who will be living on the campus and experiencing the university in such a way that the student will be. The student should feel comfortable as well as welcome to the university upon visiting which should take place at multiple campuses. You should not make an impulsive decision directly when getting accepted because there is always a chance that there is a better university for the individual out there. Take your time and think about your future not just the present. This is a decision that will impact an individual for the rest of their lives.

Jordan

Go with your gut instinct, theres nothing worse than going to a school and wishing you went somewhere else. Also make the most out of it, you only have 4 years and they are the best 4 years of you life.

Hallie

The hardest part is stepping out of your comfort zone and making new friends. Once you find your group of friends, then you are set for college.

Christine

research before hand, physically experience entire campus first hand, ask the students and faculty questions, imagine what it would be like to be on campus year round, and finally make sure you will be happy and consider family situation (do u want to be far or near to them?)

Lauren

Do not go by what any of your friends or boy/girl friend might be doing. You truly will be most happy going by what you think will suit you the best

Robert

Make the most out of the school you choose because once you get there it will only be as good as you make it

Brittany

Never settle because your friends are there.

Carolina

I believe students should speak with their parents and get on the same page about looking for the college that is a perfect fit for both the student and the parent. It is a big decision and the options can be overwhelming. Start looking for colleges early, narrow down what you are looking for in a school (i.e. campus size, location, majors, extra-curricular activities, etc.), and dive in. Go on different websites, ask for brochures, and if possible schedule campus visits for your top schools. Remember once you are in college never to lose sight of your academic goals and don't let your social life interfere with your education. Take as many opportunities are given to you such as internships or extra projects or assignments that will aid in your learning and quest for a job. However, don't forget to have fun, responsibly of course, but you will truly get out of college what you put into it so give it your all and you will not be disappointed.

Jessica

Take your time, apply to as much colleges as you can because it is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.

Morgan

Make a list of what the student is used to in high school, large or small school, hands on teachers or very independent. Then go back and see what the student would like to have in a college. Also look at the weather around a school and the percent of international students at the school. Do they have the major that the student wants to take and also, do they have classes that grab the students attention? Maybe classes the student has never even heard of but would love to try because that is what college students do, we try new things every day. The first few days in college are scary, and strange but very exciting. It is ok to want to go home or cry a lot. College is not for everyone but parents need to be very supportive of their children, informing them to stick it out the first year, but the end of the first year, they will prob be so happy that they staid that they forget they ever wanted to leave. Students should try everying even if it sounds crazy. Join clubs that wouldn't have been cool in high school.

Ariel

Make sure you are very invlved in your students life, because this is the time they become independant and you dont want to lose that part of their life where they grow and your not present
