The campus is beautiful, but don't let that deceive you. I transferred out after my sophomore year to go to a new college because I couldn't stand the substance abuse issues and lack of campus culture. Most people are basic, generic, and only friendly on the surface. If your idea of a social life is to drink every night at crappy bars with the same 4-6 people you live with, then Marist is the right place for you. The school itself is like a safe little bubble of predominantly sheltered white students who only leave campus to go to bars because Poughkeepsie isn't a great area for activities. I loved my professors, but you can find good professors at any school. I just couldn't take living in the "Marist bubble", anymore. Yes the campus looks like a country club, but ask yourself if you'll be happy doing nothing but drinking on weekends and trying to force your basic girl/guy roommates to like you so you don't feel left out. A lot of students are sheltered and privileged. There are many openly conservative students and a lot of the so called liberal students are not very progressive, they are white girls engaging in performative activism by reposting pastel infographics on their Instagram stories and patting themselves on the back. If you are unique in any way, or don't like to drink, I would find a city school or a different college. I regret the money I spent here. Tuition is going up every year because they keep redoing the buildings to attract wealthy, white prospective students. Campus life is just going to crappy bars every weekend and getting hammered with the same people you live with. Don't like the people you live with? Looks like you're out of luck. I wish I had never spent time at this school full of sheltered, shallow alcoholics wasting their parents money on a useless communications degree.

Pros: great sciences, great media classes and media lab, beautiful campus, decent accommodations center Cons: have to drive most places, not many parking places for commuter students, not great vegetarian or vegan options in the dining hall, dark campus at night, accommodations housing is far from the main buildings, lots of parties (I'm not a party person)

I visited Marist a few months ago and it is absolutely beautiful. As I was walking around campus, current students were really nice. The campus itself is very pleasing and gave me the "home" feeling. The facilities were updated and clean. Everyone seemed kind and easy to talk to. It is definitely a 10/10 college campus!

Marist College is amazing. It is just the right size, not too big and not too small. The classes are rarely more than 30 students so your professors really know you. We have a great night life whether you want to bar hop or go to a frat party. Even if you don't drink, Marist offers a ton of stuff to do when you're not in class. The housing is also great. After freshman year, you're almost guaranteed an apartment style house with your friends. In the warm weather everyone lays outside and has a great time. We like to call it camp Marist.

The greek life on campus is small but they do a lot. They run Relay For Life and many other charities, the frats have houses and have parties, and they have greek week in the spring. Poughkeepsie has a ton of bars, some are 21+ while some are 18 to get it. Taxis will take you there for $2 a ride. Sports teams also have houses and will have parties. Junior and Senior housing isn't dry so they can drink in their dorms. Marist also sponsors events like concerts, coffeehouses, plays, and trips to the city for cheap. There really is never a dull moment here.

  13. What is the stereotype of students at your school?

At first, Marist may seem to be comprised of white, middle-to-upper class students from places like Long Island and New Jersey. While a percentage of our population is from the Tri-State area and come from suburban areas, this is not true of the entire student body. After a short time at the school, you will begin to pick up on just how DIVERSE we really are. It may not seem so on the outside, but I am constantly amazed by the wide variety of backgrounds, personalities, experiences and opinions of my fellow students. There is just about every "type" of college student represented at Marist and finding your niche is simply an act of putting yourself out there, joining clubs and activities that interest you and making the most out of your time here.
