What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Students need to make the decision on their own. They need to find a place that is right for them. Students who go to a school just because their parents want them to, are making a mistake. If they don't want to go there, then they will not strive to perform their best, nor will they do what needs to be done in order to stay. Students need to find a place that feels like home - a place where they are comfortable. It will be their "home," in most cases, for the next two to four years. As far as making the most of their college experience, students need to get involved with the school. Whether they play a sport or get involved in a student activities committee, taking ownership in the school makes the college experience worthwhile. Their studies are most definitely the main reason they are there, but they need to find a place to relieve stress and enjoy their time. It goes by quickly. Before you know it, you'll be in the "real world" with real bills, which aren't fun. Make the most of your college experience while you can!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I would have known how hard and annoying it would be to walk in the snow to class.

What kind of person should attend this school?

Someone who doesn't mind the weather should attend this school. Also, athletes are well-liked and are the popular ones.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Mercyhurst is small, and all the academic buildings, dorms, and apartments are extremely close. This is great when walking to class in a blizzard, which happens often. Another pretty unique thing about Mercyhurst is how much emphasis the school places on the arts. A person truly does receive a Liberal Arts education here, and there are quite a few classes that every student must take to graduate, such as Art Appreciation, Philosophy, and Ethics.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The best piece of advice I have for someone trying to select the right college is to choose the college that best fits him/her, not the other way around. I made that mistake, and ended up wasting thousands of dollars. If you choose a college based on where your friends are going or because it's three miles from a beach, you'll end up very unhappy. Instead of finding an attractive school and trying to fit in, find the school that has everything you're looking for, and don't let anything discourage you. I would also attempt to describe to someone going to college for the first time how difficult it can be to get along with roommates. Unlike at home, where your siblings are at least raised the same, you will be in situations with people who have very different beliefs and habits than you. It is very important to accept everybody for who they are, and to keep an open mind about everything. Instead of labeling someone as "weird," instead think they are just used to different things than you. This alone will go a long way towards creating a peaceful living environment.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I brag most about how few classes I have to take per term. Since Mercyhurst operates under a trimester system, we typically only take between 8 and 12 credits per term instead of the 16 to 18 that students who go to schools with semesters do. Although it's strange, it's also common to brag about the free laundry servieces available on our campus. It's hard to resist when your friends are complaining about how much they spend on laundry a year, or dragging their laundry home every week for their moms to do.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

The bonding at my school is very unique. The diversity that consists is huge and it is really interesting in making friends from other countries and learning all about their culture and having those people for life long friends. Even the professors are diverse and that helps big when they are teaching about different cultures because you experience it first hand.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The one important thing about choosing the right college is not worrying about price. Money may be tough while going through college but you have to be happy in what you are doing in order to get out of college what you should. You can not sacrifice your happiness for money issues. There will always be a way to pay for things. Parents need to just make sure that the college fits what their child wants to pursue in life and their type of attitude.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about my school i feel is the cost. I don't come from a family who has tons of extra money and i can't seem to get any loans to help my parents out. I would love to take that pressure away. School should be about learning and not having to worry about how much your spending and how your family that you left to go to school is going to survive with everything.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My advice for you is to not focus so much on the partying. Focus on what matters the most, and will benefit you throughout life. I have experienced the parties and trust me they are not worth it. Your education is a big deal...dont ruin it from partying. As for finding a school, that all depends on your major. Find the school that best fits your major, as well as being close to family because family is everything.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I would give would be that just because you went to a small high school doesn't necessarily mean that going to a small college is the best route. I went to a small high school and thought that going to a small college would be the right fit for me, I was completely wrong. So my best advice would be if you don't like people knowing your name or your face and you dont like people know all about who your dating or what you did last saturday night I would consider going to a larger school. Also, get to know the administrators as best you can because those are the people who your going to really help you when you in it. But most importantly have fun!!! There are a lot of kids that don't drink or do drugs so if you don't do any of those things, dont fret because a lot of kids on campus don't either, it's just the idiots that do you have to worry about.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The people here are pretty fake. It's pretty much like catholic girls gone wild. The guys are only out for one thing and that of course being sex. The classes are tough and getting an A at this school if practically impossible unless you want to spend your entire life in the library. The parties are lame unless you like being cramped into a tiny 20x20 foot basement with 200 people and have the keg kicked by 11.

One of only a few schools who will allow participation in varsity athletics while enrolled in a Sportmedicine athlethic training major.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Look at the big picture. Don't worry about money until you're down to 3 or 4 schools to choose from. Visit the school! If you have a question...ask a student...they will be honest.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Take your time in finding the right college. Try and meet with the professors in your chosen field, as it will give you a good idea of what to expect the next four years. You can get a good feel on how much they care about their students in this meeting. Don't be afraid to look at different types of colleges, because you may end up liking one that you may not have expected.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Some one looking for a big campus, lots of parties. People who don't want to take core classes like philosophy, psychology, and religion. Slackers.

Describe the students at your school.

My classmates are generally goal-oriented and focused on doing well in class, although some tend to lose focus and procrastinate for a good deal of the term, leaving them in a tight position during finals week when all of our projects and papers are due. Apart from this common weakness, my classmates are nice, helpful, and accepting of new ideas and fun, strange personalities.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

In my search for a college, I chose based on my desired major. Little did I know that my major would change three times before I settled upon one. When choosing a college, I would suggest that you actually have an advantage being as of yet undecided. If you do not know what you to major in, then there are several, perhaps more important, factors on which I suggest you focus. Are you comfortable with the school size? My school is relatively small and I enjoy it very much. However, and smaller and I would feel cramped. It is a large contributor to your comfort level on campus, and so I deem it quite important for prospective students. Another important question to ask is "Am I a liberal arts or science and math oriented student? As I stated earlier, it is not imperative to be, and is in fact better if you are not, decided in your major, because you should not allow this to affect your decision; it is comparatively insignificant. However, knowing yourself enough to decide whether you are better with words or numbers is very important. These questions will help you find the college best for you.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had known that this statement is a true one: You will not be able to read everything that you are assigned in college. It is important to pick and choose what is important and what you can do without. Also, this phrase, one you might have heard from one of your younger high-school teachers, is also true: It's not about working hard, it's about working smart. This is true on so many levels. Without actually cutting corners, anything you can do to help you decrease your workload is helpful.

Its snow and its strict rules. People dont come here to party they come to learn. The expense is quite high as well so if anyone wants an education they are going to have to pay for it.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

You are not going to college to party. Your there to get a degree and that is the most important thing. Also be sure to make lots of friends and make a huge impression on everyone you meet. Good luck
