What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Do not look for the instant gratification. Take the time to set goals and realize that these long term goals will pay off in the long run. Make time for fun activities but do not get discouraged when your friends are out partying every weekend and you?re in studying because you chose a difficult major that will pay off in the end. Also, the networking at a university is amazing. There is almost an unlimited amount of information a conversation away. Most professors are more than happy to guide you in this chapter of our lives.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

The beauty of it. Mercyhurst College takes a lot of pride in its landscaping. From its wonderful entrance gates to its wooden walkway paths, this is what hits you first when you step onto the campus.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Finding the right college was perhaps the best part about my applicaiton process. I can remeber driving through the big iron gates to what is now my campus and just thinking that this was the place I was supposed to be for the next four years of my life. The best advice I can give to someone looking for the right college for them is to make sure you visit the campus and then just go with your gut. You do not really get the experience of a college until you visit the campus, the department of your possible major, the cafateria and anything else that will play a major role in your life there. You need to be comfortable with your final decision because your college experience really does help you develop into the adult you will always be.

What kind of person should attend this school?

A person that is hard working as well as goal and success oriented. Someone that wants to make the most of their life and is willing to work hard to put themselves on top.

The school that I attend is very small and everybody knows everybody for the most part. At the other schools I was considering, it would be very difficult to know who everyone is.

Visit as many schools as you possibly can and pick whatever school you felt the most comfortable at. If you find a school where you feel comfortable you will most likely enjoy your time at school. No matter what the other characteristics of other schools have, choose the school in which you feel like you would fit in the best.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about my school is the diversity of people. Most of the people here are white caucasian and come from upper middle class families.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Before you begin the process of choosing a college, it is very important to make a list of the qualities of your ideal school. The list should include such information as the size of school, the programs of study avaliable, the location (urban, rural, east coast, etc.), and the student activities avaliable. After you have made the list, rank your criteria in order of importance. Having a list of important factors will help greatly in the search for the perfect school for you. The list will help eliminate colleges that do not fit your criteria, saving a great amount of time. Choose a handful of colleges that best represent your ideals. Once you have applied and been accepted, make sure that you choose a college that has the most possible matches to your list. Be sure that you choose a college that fits at least your top two or three criteria, if not all. Your college experience will be the most enjoyable if you attend a college that allows you to participate in the activites and studies you enjoy in a place you feel comfortable in. You will be happiest if the college you choose fits your personality.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Mercyhurst College is unique because it is a small catholic school. It offers small classes with more opportunity to communicate with teachers/faculty. There are a number of core classes that are required by the college. These classes are a great way to broaden one's knowledge. The classes range from religion, to world cultures, to basic maths and sciences. The students are friendly and easy to get along with.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I think that the most helpful advice about finding the right college is to make sure that you are somewhere that you are happy. This place, college, will be your home away from home for the next four years. It is an important decision to make that you are in a place that you love! It is also important to not only find a place that you will be comfortable but also a place that you can afford. You can be in a place you want to be, but might not be happy because of financial difficulty.

What's unique about your campus?

Thebest thing about Mercyhurst College is a tie between its size and location. The size of the school is fairly small as mentioned in the above essay. It makes it easier to speak up in class. The teachers are more accessible, which makes it easier to succeed in classes that one may find difficult. The location of Mercyhurst College is also a great thing because, there are many things to do there. It is not far from home and there is always something to keep you busy.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Students need to make the decision on their own. They need to find a place that is right for them. Students who go to a school just because their parents want them to, are making a mistake. If they don't want to go there, then they will not strive to perform their best, nor will they do what needs to be done in order to stay. Students need to find a place that feels like home - a place where they are comfortable. It will be their "home," in most cases, for the next two to four years. As far as making the most of their college experience, students need to get involved with the school. Whether they play a sport or get involved in a student activities committee, taking ownership in the school makes the college experience worthwhile. Their studies are most definitely the main reason they are there, but they need to find a place to relieve stress and enjoy their time. It goes by quickly. Before you know it, you'll be in the "real world" with real bills, which aren't fun. Make the most of your college experience while you can!

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I would have known how hard and annoying it would be to walk in the snow to class.

What kind of person should attend this school?

Someone who doesn't mind the weather should attend this school. Also, athletes are well-liked and are the popular ones.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Mercyhurst is small, and all the academic buildings, dorms, and apartments are extremely close. This is great when walking to class in a blizzard, which happens often. Another pretty unique thing about Mercyhurst is how much emphasis the school places on the arts. A person truly does receive a Liberal Arts education here, and there are quite a few classes that every student must take to graduate, such as Art Appreciation, Philosophy, and Ethics.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The best piece of advice I have for someone trying to select the right college is to choose the college that best fits him/her, not the other way around. I made that mistake, and ended up wasting thousands of dollars. If you choose a college based on where your friends are going or because it's three miles from a beach, you'll end up very unhappy. Instead of finding an attractive school and trying to fit in, find the school that has everything you're looking for, and don't let anything discourage you. I would also attempt to describe to someone going to college for the first time how difficult it can be to get along with roommates. Unlike at home, where your siblings are at least raised the same, you will be in situations with people who have very different beliefs and habits than you. It is very important to accept everybody for who they are, and to keep an open mind about everything. Instead of labeling someone as "weird," instead think they are just used to different things than you. This alone will go a long way towards creating a peaceful living environment.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I brag most about how few classes I have to take per term. Since Mercyhurst operates under a trimester system, we typically only take between 8 and 12 credits per term instead of the 16 to 18 that students who go to schools with semesters do. Although it's strange, it's also common to brag about the free laundry servieces available on our campus. It's hard to resist when your friends are complaining about how much they spend on laundry a year, or dragging their laundry home every week for their moms to do.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

The bonding at my school is very unique. The diversity that consists is huge and it is really interesting in making friends from other countries and learning all about their culture and having those people for life long friends. Even the professors are diverse and that helps big when they are teaching about different cultures because you experience it first hand.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The one important thing about choosing the right college is not worrying about price. Money may be tough while going through college but you have to be happy in what you are doing in order to get out of college what you should. You can not sacrifice your happiness for money issues. There will always be a way to pay for things. Parents need to just make sure that the college fits what their child wants to pursue in life and their type of attitude.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about my school i feel is the cost. I don't come from a family who has tons of extra money and i can't seem to get any loans to help my parents out. I would love to take that pressure away. School should be about learning and not having to worry about how much your spending and how your family that you left to go to school is going to survive with everything.

the season runs on trimesters which are 10 week terms.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My advice for you is to not focus so much on the partying. Focus on what matters the most, and will benefit you throughout life. I have experienced the parties and trust me they are not worth it. Your education is a big deal...dont ruin it from partying. As for finding a school, that all depends on your major. Find the school that best fits your major, as well as being close to family because family is everything.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I would give would be that just because you went to a small high school doesn't necessarily mean that going to a small college is the best route. I went to a small high school and thought that going to a small college would be the right fit for me, I was completely wrong. So my best advice would be if you don't like people knowing your name or your face and you dont like people know all about who your dating or what you did last saturday night I would consider going to a larger school. Also, get to know the administrators as best you can because those are the people who your going to really help you when you in it. But most importantly have fun!!! There are a lot of kids that don't drink or do drugs so if you don't do any of those things, dont fret because a lot of kids on campus don't either, it's just the idiots that do you have to worry about.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The people here are pretty fake. It's pretty much like catholic girls gone wild. The guys are only out for one thing and that of course being sex. The classes are tough and getting an A at this school if practically impossible unless you want to spend your entire life in the library. The parties are lame unless you like being cramped into a tiny 20x20 foot basement with 200 people and have the keg kicked by 11.
