What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Monique

Knowing what I know now, as a college freshman, and comparing my entire high school career, I would have more then enough advice to give myself if I was able to go back in time. These are the following items of advice I would tell myself: Take school more seriously. Re-take the AIMS so that I can get higher scores. Take the pre-ACT test, you can really do better then you think. Really think about the classes that I'm planning on taking throughout my high school career. Think about foreign lanuages: which would be more helpful French or Spanish? Don't assume, it doesn't really get you anywhere. Don't waste money, save instead. Think for longer then a day when making a really big decison than can affect you in any way. Most importantly, start completing scholarships way earlier in high school. But also think things through, life is full of possibilities.

Laura

Don't be afraid to try new things- venture outside your comfort zone. You'll only get these years once; make the absolute most of them. Meet new people. Try new things. Learn to balance your school load and social life early on and let yourself off the hook once in a while. Find a study group. Get to know your instructors. Enjoy pizza night with friends. Don't forget what you went through that made you who you are in this moment, and also the experiences that helped shape you. But always, 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, be open to the experiences before you.

Heather

Heather, what were you thinking? You should have enrolled in college despite what mom said about going to school. I know her priorities were serving God fulltime in the ministry, but you need an education to support yourself. You should have taken the math and science classes to get ahead of the game. I know the classes are challenging, and attending college requires commitment; but you are a smart girl. If you don?t enroll in college while you are young, life gets in the way. Before you know it you will be a mother of three young girls, struggling to just get by. If you take the right steps while you are young, you will be a college graduate before you know it. You will have a career you love. I know it is hard to go against what mom says, but it will be worth the fights. I know she will support you in the long run. So stop second guessing yourself, and start applying yourself towards the education you want and deserve.

I would tell myself to take control of my own life, and to take life head on and don't over-do it. Life is about quality not how many things you can do at once but how you present yourself and how well you do those single tasks. I would tell myself to not be so dependant on others who have let me down in the past but to stay motivated because I have the ultimate task of motherhood coming up in the near future and to surround myself with good people, and keep my heart and mind open to new experiences.

Ivan

Going back as a high senior, I know the areas where I made all of my mistakes. I was having alot of difficulty understanding algebra and geometry. So everything that made me today from not doing as well in college was because i was to shy and scared to ask for help. It wasn't only math that I needed help it was every subject in high school. I will go back in time and tell myself to study a little bit more and to not be afraid of school. That I would succeed if I just ask for a little bit of help.

Sarah

I would have told myself two things in particular. The first is to attend a community college in order to allow myself to get a chance to find out what I really want to do with my life. I would have saved a lot of time and money if maybe I had just slowed down and took my time. The second is to apply for as many scholarships as possible, they are out there and they could be very helpful when you have finally chosen to live on your own, supporting yourself and your life style.

Kailey

When I was in high school, I thought that I knew absolutely everything about college, since most of my friends have already graduated and gone off to ASU or NAU. If I could go back in time to talk to myself as a senior, the number one thing I would tell myself is to search for scholarships. I was in the marching band in high school with many friends and I never took the time to really search and look for all of the different scholarships I could have been earning. As for the translation from high school into college, I would say to take it slowly, and do not let the freedom gained take over. I would calm myself down about what I was going to do in the future, because as of now, it is obvious and i was completely blind as a high school senior as to what I wanted to do as a career. The number one thing I would say is to have fun while holding up responsibilities!

Lindsey

The thought of being able to go back to high school, knowing what I know now about college, frequently crosses my mind. Luckily, I have a sister who is curently a senior in high school and has an advantage with my knowledge of the college world. The first and most important piece of advice is to sign up for dual credit classes. I am thankful I enrolled in a few classes, but would have been much better off if I had taken as many as possible. Another important piece of advice is to discover what you like and are good at through out high school. Having a solid idea of what you want to study in college makes many decisions much more simple in the long haul. Lastly, it is crucial to apply for many colleges as well as scholariships. This gives you obtainable options that allow you to choose what is most realistic and suitable for you. Although I am finally on the pathway toward my degree, a few of these important tidbits would have been extremly helpful over the duration of my high school career.

Daniel

I would tell my self to not use my A.D.D. as an excuse and focus on the information I felt was unimportant. I am now going to be a year behind because I did not want to take my simple math classes. I have enough stress with work and my daughter, that I do not need another added stress. By simply going to math and passing I will have what I need to get my associates on time, but since I did not, I have to double load my classes just to finish in the alloted time. This small thing has created such a large burdin on me and is the only thing that can keep me from graduating on time. With our current resession I can not afford to not be a prime canidate for a fire department. Quit being lazy and push hard. I know you do not want to but you are going to regret it and you already have the regret from not spending time with mom before she passed. I know you are strong and motivated. I have faith in you.

Angelique

If I could go back in time, the first thing I would acknowledge would be the the need for myself to be more persistent and patient with the whole college thing. I would also tell myself to slow down and enjoy the small things in my life at that time! I now am a single parent of three, and trying to attempt college once again. If I could have the opprotunity tell myself that the smallest of choices can effect you for a lifetime and how important it is to attend and finish school. I just want the chance to once again, finish school - looking back I can definiatly see what a differece finishing college at a younger age and before the rest of life had happened, could have made in my life. All I can do now is to tell myself at thirty-two, is to GO FOR IT!!! That I can really do this college thing - young or old. Thank you.

Mya

If I could go back into time to my high school senior year I would take advanced placement classes, and try to raise my gpa. Also I did not make any mistakes just learning experiences and with out them I would not be the same person that I am today.

Dylan

Surely if I could send my wisdom back in time to a former Highschool Variation of myself, Id certainly have two lewels of priceless advice: First of all, you think your pretty clever dont you?, well You are not. You dont know anything, nor does anyone else, and the more You learn the more Obvious that becomes. and Secondly, dont be afraid. Of anything or anyone. You are Impervious to nearly everything but the consequence of your own Ignorance. These are two very lucky talents of Yours, do not take them for granted nor let them go to your head. p.s. You hated psycology, it was like reading pamphlets on obsolete outdated research. Take Philosophy Instead, you will find it much more fascinating and useful.

Anna

I would say that study habits, testing skills, and patience will help you when your in college. College requires more studying than high school. In college you need to study at least two hours for each class. The tests in college are longer and require you to really understand the material. Patience is key. Different teachers have different teaching styles. If your learning style doesn't match their teaching style, the class will be harder for you. It doesn't mean it's impossible, it just means you will have to work harder. You will have to be patient with your teachers. College is rough, but you can handle it.

sarah

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself not to wait to go to college. I waited a year to go to college because I had a child and thought it would be better to wait until after he was born. That was my biggest mistake because it has taken me seven years being in and out of school to get this far and I dont even have my Associates Degree yet. I would tell myself to do whatever it took to go to school full time and work really hard to get finished so that I could have a career and be stable for my son. I would also tell myself that there is nothing more important than education and that the consequences for waiting to go to school are far worse than I thought. Being a mother and a waitress while still trying to go to school and get good grades is a struggle. Do it right, stay in school, and don't give up.

Chris

When I graduated high school I had taken many classes that could have gone toward college credit. Foolishly, I did not take advantage of that opportunity. I was questioning even going to college. If I could go back, I would explain to myself that I will end up going back to school and getting a bachelor's degree in Anthropology, which I had already been considering while in high school. I would tell myself to use all of those advanced classes for college credit, because who wants to take Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry again? I think putting it that way would really get the attention of that young kid known as my former self. Also, I would tell myself to get ready to meet a ton of new people during my freshman year in college, and not to let that distract me as it clearly did. I would explain that years later I will come to understand the true meaning of discipline, and that it is neither smothering one's self strictly with work nor burning one's self out with fun, but a balance of the two. Of course, if I knew then what I know now.....

Katie

Katie Jean Billingsley. This is it. Your finally graduating...But then what? Where are you going? What are you going to do? How are you going to get there? First, just breathe. Its not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. You can do it! You don't need to have your whole future planned out right now! People of all ages still don't know what they want to be. Don't stress about the future. do what you need to do today to be ready for tomorrow. Take things one day at a time. Apply yourself to learn all that you can. Take every assignment to that next level to get you to where you want to be. You've got such a good head on your shoulders, show people what you can do. You've already achieved so much in life. This is just another step into your life. Your already heading in the right direction, so don't stress about the little things! Learn, have fun, and smile!

Heather

As a high school senior, it still wasn?t clear whether or not my family would be moving from Michigan to Arizona. I thought I would be attending school at Grand Valley State University. If I could travel back in time, I would certainly inform myself of the impending move. Upon arrival in Arizona, I knew nothing about the colleges around here, and because of the last-minute and rather hectic move I didn?t start school until the spring after my family moved here. Moreover, I would recommend really laying out my goals for the future; what my interests are, what kind of careers I might enjoy, and what kind of degrees would help me get to where I need to be. Currently my major is undecided, and I would advise my high school self to really aim to explore various careers and options, spending time at the college?s career center as soon as possible, and certainly consulting the academic advisors for help in reaching my academic goals.

Erin

I would tell myself to get more involved with school activities and also volunteer my time more outside of school to those who need it most. I was always so intimidated by college, like it was a whole other world. Truth is, it was another world, but a better one at that. I would have told myself to be more confident and set my worries aside. To not worry so much about what I would learn, the length of time I had to learn it, and my financial stability. If I would have applied myself then as I did this past year, nothing would have gotten in my way. I would like the opportunity to further my education in the healthcare field so I may learn new skills to help those who need it most.

Natalie

When I was a junior in high school I remember everyone already beginning to freak out about college and what they were going to do in the years to come. Young and naive I didn?t think much of it until my second semester of senior year. Like most people I became frantic and wasted time not applying for schools or scholarships. Many of my friends were taking dual credit classes which I found to be unnecessary. Knowing what I know now I would have done SO many things differently. I would have applied for many more scholarships and applied for those "unnecessary" dual credit classes like English to finish faster. It would have saved me a lot more time and money. What I am glad that I did was the fact that I took math and science all four years which helped me pass out of lower math classes. I also would have told myself that maybe having a full time job straight out of high school and night school life was not going to be for me. So in conclusion more scholarships and dual-credit classes are what I would tell myself to do differently!

Todd

If I was to go back in time and have the ability to talk to myself, I would have to tell myself to study the basics a lot better than what I did. After you get the basics start on the more advanced courses toget a head start so I can be ahead of the game. There are alot of students that take classes and are not ready for them, they think that it will be the same as high school but it is not. I better grow up and start thinking as an adult, less partying and more studies will go a long way. When you get out on your own you have to more disiplined in your actions because all the choices you make will affect your life and what direction it takes.

Noah

Going back in time to my senior year in high school, hmm? in all reality I would really like to go back to my freshmen year in high school but for this paper I will stay with my senior year. I would tell myself to study harder and to stay in sports. I would also tell myself to try to get a scholarship so I would be able to go to college; seeing that both of my parents where drop outs. If I did go to college I could have a better life by now. I would also tell myself to stay away from the friends that I had in high school. Wow it is just like my parents told me and it is just like I?m telling my daughter now. If I went after my dreams, perhaps we would not be in the position that we are in now. I also tell her that education is a very important tool for life. I feel this is just like an old saying ?If I knew back then, what I know now?. But it is never too late to go after your dreams.

Taylor

If I was allowed to go back in time and talk to myself about college I would first tell myself to do the best I can in highschool for my senior year. I would also tell myself that taking the SAT and ACT are very important as well. While talking to myself I would also remind myself to always ask for help from my counselor, career center at the highschool I was attending, and also my parents, because college is a very big thing and a huge step in one's life and can impact the way I would get my education and start my own life and career.

Bethza

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would warn myself that high school is nothing like college. That in college there is way more work, reading and tests. Once you get into college it is all about school and no more joking around or missing class. In college you have to take everything way more serious because teachers don't give you 2-3 times to make up the work or tests, if you don't go to class and do that test or turn in that project, then there's no good grade. Overall, all that hard work and studying will be worth it at the end.

Stephanie

I would tell myself to be more outoing in college and to study harder.I would also tell myself to put money away so that it could start saving up and i would have more money to spend on food and books. Also, i would say to make more friends in college and go to study groups to get ahead and take harder class to get ahead and graduate early.

kiasha

I would definately tell myself that my parents dont always know whats best for me so i shouldnt let them choose what college i attend. I would also tell myself to be focused freshman year of college should be a breeze if i just keep grounded. I'd also tell myself more importantly make friends cause youll be miserable without them. Most importantly go to school out of Arizona stop being scared and make the plunge and go.

Emily

College libraries and professors have awesome resources; all you have to do is ask for help. Having smaller class sizes is valuable, as is choosing classes based on the professor. Find passionate professors, because they will be able to translate that passion to you and help you learn so much more. Tools like ratemyprofessor.com are really important for making the most of your tuition money. The most important thing I would stress to my high school self is that travel is the best educator, so DO a study abroad program. Get involved in extra curricular activities to find friends who are like-minded. Having good friends is essential to having a good life. By participating in out-of-the-ordinary activities you?ll also find networking opportunities. All college campuses have unique things to offer, but to be happy in any school you must first be happy with yourself. Be happy with your classes and major, be happy with the job you are doing and the friends you surround yourself with, be at peace with your family and treat your body well, and you will love life anywhere you are.

Cara

Cara, Life is full of exciting, sad, hilarious, spontaneous, magical and unimaginable times, none of these things will matter without your education. I understand that you have just spent the last twelve years slaving over books, hearing dad nag about your math grade and the horrific boring times sitting in Mrs. Alamys history class; but without these times you would not be where you are today. Continuing your education will not only bring you one step closer to achieving the life you wish for but also give you bring you one step farther then you were before. With a degree under your belt you can travel the world, live a simple blissful life without worry living your life dreams. With that degree you can have a career in wherever you wish, you can be happy. College is completely different from high school I promise, you have the freedom to make your own choices, you have the right to speak your opinion. College is a choice, a gift to yourself that should be accepted and used to the fulliest. Your life in college will be an experince you will never forget, I promise she would be proud.

Lyric

Lyric, you must perservere "self rescue" you are in charge of your education and future. You can succeed at anything if you are willing to work, study and aspire. Lyric, study longer and don't give up. If you maintain good grades the doors of oppertunity begin to open for you early. Progression is entirely up to you. Sucess is frightening however, failure states that you quit trying. Quitting is unacceptable a higher education is plausible and a means of success. Begin to organize neater and maintain steady studying habits. Inquire, if you are uncertain of which direction to go. If school begins to be difficult reach out ask questions seek tutors. Professors, advisors and students alike have many tools at their fingertips to ensure success in the future. My future is entirley left up to me and my wills at which to dispell it.

Mindy

I would advise myself that while yes choosing a career to help others is important, in the long run making money to support yourself is just as important for a satisfactory life and to choose wisely.

Cheryl

I would tell myself not to take too many classes while working full time because then I wouldn't have had to withdraw from the classes I did because I couldn't handle the load. Also to pick more online classes because it's easier to handle with work and friends.

Alicia

College life is completely different than high school. There is not homework every night and the classes are not everyday, which is nice. The professors are very helpful and are very knowledgable about the subjects they teach. The professors usually give the class their e-mail address and are very understanding when it comes to missed classtime due to an emergency. It's important to speak with an advisor about registration for classes for the coming semester to make sure you are on track with finishing for your degree. There are some down sides to college. Generally, grades are based on mostly test scores. Some professors may involve some extra credit or projects, but usually about 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of your grade is based from your test scores. When speaking with an advisor, if you feel uncomfortable with the information that that advisor gave you, go to another advisor for varification that that information is correct because sometimes the advisors do not always know what they are talking about. College can be relaxed and easy, but it can also be frustrating and stressful. Just have to take it one class at a time and be organized in how you spend your time.

Sarah

On a personal note, I would advise myself not to make quick decisions, to stay in school and to stick with my commitments. Also to think about what I really want out of life, not what is expected of me or would make my parents happy. At the end of the day, my parents will be happy if I am happy, and if I am happy, I can achieve anything.

Rebecca

If i could go back and tell my high school self anything, i would say dont let anyone tell you who you are and what you can accomplish. That no matter what, nothing is more important than your family and friends, and you should always keep them close and remind them everyday of your feelings for them. Also that there is nothing and no one out there that can make you happy until your truely happy with yourself. And lastly that even in the short time that I've come that you are already on your way to becoming the person you long to be and to keep up the good work.

Susan

Michael

If i had the chance to go back and talk to myself as a senior in highschool, the advice i would give would be to apply for scholorships and financial aid before graduation and not while attending college. This would have saved me countless amounts of money from paying tuition out of my pocket and it would have saved me hours of searching and applying for scholorships and financial aid. I would also tell myself to apply for FAFSA while still living at home with my mother, saving us both money, and to look for a better job to help with paying tuition and bills incase it took some time to get approved for finacial help. Looking back it was a big mistake to pass by the opportunities that my high school was offering at the time for students to apply for financial aid before graduation. It is unfortunate that i had to realize my mistakes later in my educational planning and not sooner, but it is a part of growing up and getting smarter, learning and building off my errors.

Juaqyna

Have faith in yourself, this will be a great experience. You will meet and befriend people with all different backgrounds, beliefs and heritage. College will open your mind and expand your heart. It will lead you to dicover that you have a purpose, that you will make a difference in your life. Your unique style will save some and encourage others to reach for their dreams. You go, learn, wish, dare, reach, never be satisfied with just ok.

Burgess

If I could go back in time and speak to Burgess Levenda as a senior I would start off by saying, "Don't lose sight of your dream. If your dream is to become a traveling Nurse, start taking your steps now. Forget about that boyfriend of a year, he is blocking your path to success. Jump at every medical oppurtunity that comes your way. Wake up at 5:00 am those Staurday mornings to volunteer at Banner Baywood. It will be worth it...trust me. Sign up for that Vision Africa trip, go over there, and use what you know. When you come back, you will be looking at life through a different pair of eyes. Something will burn in your heart and you will have determination like nothing you have had before. Hold on to that. That is what you want, to do everything in your power to help the ones who need it most. People need you, don't let them down. Keep studying, keep fighting temptations, and remember your dream. ALWAYS."

Christopher

If I were allowed to go back to my senior year i would tell myself to be the best i can possibly be. If i had ever thought that i was doing the best i can try to do even better take some online classes to boost my gpa level to try and get to a better school. Learn how to study now instead of later would be a pretty good. Save my money instead of spending it on stupid stuff and going out to eat so much. Stay away From some girls they're bad for my health and full of problems i dont need its better to just stay focused on school. Dont take anything for granted

Stephany

The advice I would give myself would be to get involved as much as i can. It really makes time fly and helps with the transition in college. I would apply more for scholarships and encourage myself to do a lot better to recieve grants for my grades.

Justin

I have a number of physical disabilities. Without boring you with hard-to-pronounce names, I have a heart condition that makes it hard to strenuous work; I have a spinal disorder that has caused some disfigurements. Growing up I would refuse special assistance because I wanted to be normal. This continued when I started college when applying for aid?I did not want to use my history as reason for need or help. I would tell myself to kill the pride and milk it for all it?s worth. I?d also tell myself: don't rush. I was in a hurry to get done with school and start my career, to become the next Steven Spielberg, and I jumped head first into a school and a program that ended up not leading where I wanted it. I now owe a lot of money for a degree that I am not using. I also stopped attending classes for a semester. This set me back. I would also tell myself to work much harder than I have. Find a steady job, stick with it and to save as much money as possible.

COURTNEY

If I met my self back in time in high school senior years I would tell myself to not try to grow up so fast. I got a job which paid for a car and moved out. Now 10 years later I am having to go back to school and it is very hard. I have forgotten a lot of things. For instance math, I have forgotten most of the formulas for Algebra and am having to take refresher courses. If I were to go straight from school to college it would be easier for me taking courses because I would have the skills already from going to school for years and not lose the money or time on taking refresher courses.
