The end of high school to me felt like some kind of apocalypse. People were scrambling to get scholarships done, frantic to see whether or not thier desired colleges accpeted them. I applied at probably 4 or 5 different colleges, I was very undecied about where i wanted to go. I had conflicting interests, my best friend was going to the University of Missouri in Columiba and my other best friend was attending Missouri State in Springfield. Honestly the fact that my friends were going to these schools was more important then how good the teaching staff was or how good of a school it was. However once i relized how expensive four year colleges are, I really had no choice but to go to Blue River, at least for two years. If I could go back I would tell myself to relax. In the stress, and emotion of the summer, I really never got to logicaly sit and relize that the decision I made was for the best. Because everything worked out ok, the school was not a dump and I still keep in contact with my friends. I would say, be smart about this.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, the advice I'd give would be to sit-out a year and take basic college level courses at a local community college and then begin attending a bigger college or university the following year. Had I done this, I would've been more prepared academically for real college and I would've knocked-out my basic courses so I could focus more on my major/minor and maybe even graduate early. Sitting-out a year would've given me the chance to save-up more money to put towards my college bill as well. College is a big expense and being financially prepared is important. In addition, taking a year off would've given me a lot more time to research my major and apply for scholarships. With all this said, I do wish I could go back and do things differently, but then I wouldn't have learned as much as I did when I started my college career.

If I had the opportunity to go back in time and talk to myself as a highschool senior, I would tell myself to not be so sure of what i am doing. When I was in high school i had my mind set on being a firefighter. Since then, I have changed my career path several times. Had i known what I do know, I probably would have chosen to go to a four year college right away.

Don't take anything for granted! Just because you're planning on going to a community college doesn't mean you can spend as much time on homework there as you do here and get A's and B's. It really is important to spend at least 2 or 3 hours on each class outside of it. Don't go for a degree that requires chemistry because you'll fail. You CAN do math, you are not incapable of doing higher-level mathematics, you just need lots of tutouring. Be diligent in all that you decide to do and don't let yourself be easily distracted. Always put your studies before social and fun things. Your best career choice is to become a counselor. Find the best school for accopmlishing this, find out how to get your bachelor's, and take the necessary prerequisites at a community college like Blue River. You CAN do anything you put your mind to do that's within your talents and strengths, NEVER NEVER NEVER give up no matter how hard something may be, you CAN do it!
