Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Lauren

While there's definitely A LOT of partying, the academics here can't be beat. It's challenging and you'll have to push yourself, which means students can't party their way through this college and expect to graduate.

Andy

The partying is accurate we do love getting rowdy, but we all are great students and take it very seriously. The library is packed during the week when it needs to be. I guess we just have good time management skills so we can party a lot and still pull off those good grades!

Jerry

for the most part

Jordan

I would say the average person drinks and there are more partiers here than at most schools. I think we party more regularly. As for the whole dumb issue, there are dumb people at every school. And I've had a lot in my classes. I think we're just more social based people instead of academic based people and that shows because we do end up getting good jobs. We're good with people and for any new job you have to be. It is a pretty diverse campus. But we do start pointless riots I guess, so who knows?

Andy

no, well... kind of. I think those who have there head on straight can party hard and do well in classes at all levels. There is a vibe at the school that you just get your work done and party when you can. It comes off as easier because MSU kids are bred to not stress or complain so much about work loads and balancing time. We just get it done. That's what the real world is about, balance, and MSU students are the best at that.

Tom

Pretty much.

Devin

Partly, there is a great deal of partying and rowdyness, and the MSU administration does not control this sufficiently.

Sarah

Not really. MSU students don't really spend any more time partying than students at other schools. With regard to rioting MSU students aren't usually the main people involved in riots.

Jesse

Yes and kind of. There is a huge party atmosphere whether its just the weekend or a football saturday.

Lane

From what I experienced, it's true -- the MSU Nursing program lacks integrity.

Nicholas

At least 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the time.

Steve

somewhate true.

Michelle

In some way they are, but every school is a party school. There is drinking at every school, to some extent. It is just on a larger scale at MSU because there are more students and they are more concentrated.

Briggsie

No

Jamie

Partiers = yes. Hot girls = not more than anywhere else...thats a college thing.

Ryan

Somewhat, yes.

Harper

yep.

Robin

Not at all!

Ryan

these are so wrong!!!! MSU has a better undergrad program then Michigan and the students all choose MSU as their first choice.

Tina

kinda

Sean

Not entirely. Most of the students rioting are NOT MSU students. But we do like to have a good time.

beth

1) Not in my immediate group of friends. I don't like to party and I found friends who don't like to party. 2) I had a couple TA's (for recitation, not lecture) and they were both horrible...

KC

If a person tries, they can find information to support it

justine

Not for all students.

TJ

Yes, the school is a lot of fun but you're surrounded with top performers. Being surrounded with high caliber students really brought out the best in me.

Megan

Some of those are true and some are, obviously false. The dorm life isnt too terrible nor is it restrictive. The professors....some of the care a great deal if you succeed or fail. My biggest issue was with the ones who dont speak English as a navitve language (or a first or second primary language). Until you get used to them, its very hard to get what they are trying to say. The food is not bad, there are some things that you want to avoid if you dont know what it is...but generally its just greasy and very high in fat/calories. Beware. lol The biggest thing to watch for is finding a great roommate. Speaking from experience, I had a terrible one my first semester and ended up bitching to the lady in the housing office for a week until I finally got it into her head I wasnt going to quit until I got moved from my room. I now have an amazing roommate whom I will be rooming with again this fall and take to heart when I tell you it really does make all the difference.

Ashley

We'll yes but you decide if you wan to go out or not.

David

None of the above stereotypes were accurate and half of the information i was given was not accurate.

Kelly

This all depends on what you're looking for in a University. If you want to get drunk, then you will. If you want to meet smart and interesting people, then you gotta know where you're more likely to find them. Just be wary. Don't let the "fun" suck you in. You will find assholes. You will find cool people. Understanding which is which is the hardest and most fun part of MSU.

aleta

Yes it is a huge party school, with house parties going on at all times. It also does have a fantastic array of degree possibilities, with well-qualified professors (for the most part-there are always exceptions!). And yes, I do believe that MSU has one of the most gorgeous campuses in the nation.

Denise

Not really, there are parties, just like at any other college or university but it isn't out of control. Of course there are plenty of "hicks" but there are also people from all different cultures.

Tony

Yes, we party. We party hard. But with a gigantic student population, of course there's going to be massive parties. MSU is not purely a party school; we have several nationally ranked programs, the top-ranked study abroad program in the United States, and consistently ranked as a Top 100 University in the world, according to U.S. News and World Reports. And we are definitely not all bitter U of M rejects. Yes, we hate Michigan, but because they're cocky and think their sh** doesn't stink. In reality, I know several State students who got accepted at both schools and decided to come to E. Lansing because of the several advantages students have here at MSU that they wouldn't have in Ann Arbor.

Kathy

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! I do not drink, and there are many people on campus who don't. Also, the courses at MSU are just as difficult as other Universities. Of course there are easier courses and harder courses, but that is found everywhere.

Nico

pretty much

Dave

Yeah, sometimes. We DO party a lot, and get into riots at times because some of us are dumb. However, there are tons of smart people here and you can be sure that there is at least someone smarter than you here.

Jody

I suppose they are for far too many students.

Shannon

No. Every university has it fair share of parties, but most of MSu students would rather stay in on a Thursday or Friday night with their friends and watch a movie.

katie

For the most part it's true, we do like to have a good time up here at State, but what most people dont realize is that we work hard and strive for perfection so that we can enjoy ourselves over the weekend.

emily

For most, yes.

Kristen

Any college campus you go to, you'd be able to find budding alcoholics, not everyone is like that.

Andy

1. True for some, but not nearly as many as people think 2. Definitely not. Student-athletes have alot on their plates...most have good grades despite hectic schedules

Becky

Yes, who else can get a 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} or more for students that have had some sort of run in with the law, anywhere from a noise violation to getting arrested during a riot (a fun riot not a violent lets kill everyone)

Alex

a lot of them can be for some students, but considering the fact that there are 36,000 students, they are not true at all. they are only really true for a very small percentage of the student body.

TJ

Yes. You can find that scene in a pinch. But you can also stay clear of it too.

May

Stereotypes usually come from somewhere...and there are always exceptions to the rule

Amanda

Hmmm...depending on our basketball season

Benjamin

1. No. While there is a large number of students who do party, get drunk, riot, etc., they make up too small a percentage of the entire student body for MSU to be technically called a party school. 2. No, for the most part. I think this could be said of almost any school. The majority of MSU students are there to make something of themselves, but there are some who don't care. If you take an Ivy-league school where rich parents want their kids to go to school there and the kids really don't want to be there, it's the same thing. 3. No. It is true that UofM has more stringent acceptance standards, so that's probably why people think this. But there are many people I know who were accepted to both schools but chose MSU because they got a scholarship, their major area was better at MSU, etc. MSU and UofM have different areas of academic expertise. The honors program at MSU in particular has more opportunities for students that at UofM. 4. Absolutely not. MSU is one of the only, if not the only, university in the USA with three medical schools: veterinary, MD, and DO. MSU was also ranked 1st in the nation in nuclear physics for the 2006-07 year. Are those serious and intellectual enough? 5. Maybe. There are probably some students who feel this way. I didn't. MSU is only as big as you make it. I was able to find many friends through band and fencing. If you join an extracurricular group, you will make friends.

Adrienne

I don't think they are entirely accurate. Not every student going to MSU is a huge partier and even the ones that do party a lot aren't doing things like having riots and burning stuff. It's true we did just have a party at one of the apartments that turned into a riot but not all those students are from MSU and that was just one party this year that did get out of hand. I think people think that riots happen from every party that is thrown at MSU but that definately isn't true at all! Most parties are pretty low key and just fun to be at.

Mike

Msu has been blessed with the experience of throwing amazing parties, but to be honest if you are on any college campus looking for a party you WILL find it. The problem people have with MSU is that we are just notorious for throwing extravagent parties and to say that MSU is strictly a party school than those individuals are truly blinded by jealousy. MSU has a list of major opportunities that is more than impressive. We have amazing programs such as the leading Osteopathic programs, our highly ranked Kinesiology classes, agriculture, animal science and much more. Its sad that a rivalry amongst schools has slurred our good academic standings. The last one is about how easy it is to get in. The saying that if you can't get into Michigan go to state is ridiculous. The grading requirements and standards exceed the average high school student and in so has a competitive academic program. I bet anything that people who say that about MSU are people who didnt get in themselves and ended up going to some other college.

Rachel

Somewhat. A lot of people are partiers. But a lot of people also get really good grades and go to all their classes. Quite a few of our programs (College of Education, College of Music, Vet Medicine) are ranked better than any other in Michigan, and are ranked very high in the nation
