What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Adrienne

I think MSU students are depicted as these huge partiers who go completely crazy at parties and burn couches at every party.

Mike

That MSU is strictly a party school, and that we are all a bunch of farmers or golf course managers and that it is apparently easy to get in.

Rachel

That we drink a lot, go out to parties/the bar a lot. That we have lower grades than U of M students, that MSU is not as good as U of M.

Tate

MSU students are generally stereotyped as being those too stupid to get into a better college, like U of M, or Ivy League. This demographic breaks down into two main components: mainly students in the greek system who's rich parents shuffle them off to a party college to get them out of the house, and similarly mediocre middle class students who go to college to avoid a job at McDonalds, choosing MSU because they want to get a degree while simultaneously getting stupid drunk all the time.

Crystal

That MSU is a hardcore party school that likes to riot and burn couches.

Erin

There is a well known stereotype that all MSU students do is party and drink. In fact there is a joke that all MSU students minor in drinking.

Casey

Can't read can't write, smoke green snort white

Michael

That we are a huge party school. That we riot. That we do not have smart students (as proposed by UofM). To have a social life you must be in a frat.

Elizabeth

That it's a big party school and we love a good riot!

Carmen

MSU = huge party school Frats and sororities are like what you see on t.v.

Harper

Stereotypes include that MSU is a BIG party school, and it is. However, one MUST KNOW that the police and tri-county narcotics, the FEDS and other departments are trying very hard to 'clean up' MSU and shake off the party school image. If you are interested in attending MSU because it is a party school, be aware that within welcome week, you may get a MIP (minor in possession) or any other drug possessions.

brenlo

MSU has a reputation for being a party school for a reason. Last year Cedar Fest made national news for the authorities' usage of tear gas to disperse the crowd. MSU is also known for the riots which occurred a few years ago because of a sporting event.

Sabrina

That all we do is drink and party everyday. Yea, weekends can sometimes get carried away, but it's usually only in fraternities and sororities; not on campus. My friends and I usually hang out in someones apartment and play cards. We'll have a few drinks, but nothing insane like many make us out to be.

Kyle

We know how to party! We're always getting in trouble with the law, we all smoke marijuana and snort cocaine, we're not very smart, our girls are hot, Cedar Fest is just one big angry mob, Basketball is good, our football team sucks, "if you can't go to U of M, go to State," etc.

Sarah

Some people believe that all we do is drink and party

Chrissy

that they drink.. a lot.

Renee

School is too big Party school

Leslie

They only party all the time, and that Lyman Briggs students do not ever party or go out, they just study.

Charlie

People think that MSU students party all the time and don't work hard in school. A lot of people think that just because someone goes to MSU, it means that he or she did not get into U of M. Both of these stereotypes are false. MSU is just as good of a school as U of M. The classes are very demanding and require dedication in order to receive a decent grade. At the end of the day, MSU students work just as hard as U of M students, but know how to have a better time once the work is done.

Ashley

A lot of people say its a party school, not really an education, blow off classes and whatnot.

Allison

Sami

Some stereotypes about MSU is that there are a lot of parties and nobody hardly ever studys and that MSU students are majority rich, white students that come from privileged households.

Terry

When people hear the name MSU, they think that all we do here is party and riot (like Cedarfest, 2008). Many think that MSU is synonymous to alcohol abuse.

Devin

- Stereotypes about MSU students are that we are not smart at all and that we party way too much. - People think MSU is inferior to the University of Michigan in every conceivable way.

Matt

Party School not focused on education more about the social aspect. Too big of a school to get a good education

Erin

Jillian

Drinkers, Partiers

Jackie

We LOVE to party. Somewhat true but we certainly spend alot more time in the library then we do doing keg stands. Also, MSU is alot "more attractive" than U of M, which is obviously totally true.

Allyson

1."MSU students drink and party a lot." 2."East Lansing is a roudy place with lots of riots" 3."MSU's campus is so big that it's impossible not to get lost" 4."Parking on campus sucks"

Reese

I think that a lot of people assume that MSU is a huge party school. Don't get me wrong, I definitely think that MSU students like to party, but that isn't the only thing the school is known for. Kids from other schools think that because we go here, we didn't try in high school or we are stupid but that is completely untrue. As far as I know, MSU has been getting harder and harder to get into over the years because they are trying to make a better reputation besides "party school." MSU is definitely defined by more than just partying and there are a lot of really bright students here to prove it.

Vick

MSU is for the people who didn't get into University of Michigan. MSU is a party school. MSU is a diverse campus. MSU students are rowdy and like to riot.
