What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Jeremy

I learned a lot about Michigan State University from my aunt, who is an alumni there. So I didn't really have have anything that I wished I knew about the school before coming there. Though If there was one thing, I guess it would have to say that I wish I knew how much traffic there was going to be getting from place to place there. I can only take the bus in between buildings for my classes and it is a hassle when you can't get to class on time.

Heather

I wish I would've known how big of a school MSU really is. I went to LCC right after high school and it was a very similar experience. MSU is totally different. In two of my classes there are 250+ students and there are taught in lecture halls with auditorium-style seating. Having a laptop makes taking notes so much easier!

Devyne

I wish I knew my job was going to be so darn demanding and frustrating; I work mad hours almost every weekend and a couple times during the week. I get very little time off, but it pays the bills and has a few perks...

Dayna

Knew about affordable housing.

Gregory

The most important thing that I wish I had known prior to coming to MSU would be that you don't need to know what you want to be right away. There are great counseling and advising services provided which can help you narrow your interests. I, for one, was not ready to decide my major when I was writing applications for schools. I thought it was a better idea to take some classes and get an understanding for what I was interested in before making such an important decision. You can learn so much simply by asking for help.

Kayla

Austin

The one thing that I wish I would have known before coming to MSU would have been how big the actual campus is. In becoming a student to one of the largest college campuses in the country, it would have been nice to become more familiar with the area before becoming a student there.

The university itself is the most beautiful, amazing place ever. I personally took the took the advice of one of my teachers in high school and entered the engineering department. This route took set me back a year in school, it took some time to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. Had I known and thought about things that interested me more than the opinion of a teacher, I would be much further along in my academic career. I am still trying to figure it out, but my mind is finally being stimulated.

Kristie

I wish I would have known how important getting to know your professors are in the beginning because when you get your final grade and your on the border; talking with them may help give you an extra boost from a 2.5 to a 3.0. ( This is not acceptable for every professor though) I also wish I would have known more about how to get involved with the hospital nearby, in order to volunteer there; however, I have figured it out through medical clubs I have been attending.

There are countless ways to create a small-school environment by joining different clubs or becoming Greek. I also wish I would have realized how amazing the school would turn out to be. MSU was not my first choice, but turned out to be the best close-to-home decision. The campus is green and beautiful and the Red Cedar River is a great study location. Before I went to Michigan State, I wish I would've known to get involved, and get involved early. There were some things, like the campus yearbook, that I crossed off of my list because I didn't think I could join the staff as a freshman. I joined my sophomore year, and I regret not taking the chance and applying the year before. I missed out on a possible year of experience. I think all freshman should find something to get involved with, as it helps to meet people and gain more experience.

Alexander

Before attending Michigan State University and up to mid-first semester, I had not known allmsu.com; a local online community for Michigan State University students and faculty. From housing and professor reviews to social networks and for sale ads, allmsu.com brings all of us together, creating a more efficient economic system out of the community, for daily life. I have saved much time thanks to this website.

elyse

There's a website for MSU students only, where past and present students rate their proffessors- so you know ahead of signing up for classes which teachers you want based on teaching skills, approachability, personal prefference, student experience, and ability to teach- anything that could help decide whether the class is for you . It also allows students to sell and buy their text books for cheaper than book stores. (allmsu.com) Take advantage of the undergraduate counselors to help you plan out your class load. Dont be intimidated by upper-class, everyone loves everyone who's a Spartan.

Joanna

That getting involved in your school actually tends to give you a better GPA because you learn how to manage your time.

Kristin

I wish i would have known what classes to take with what teachers make it the most fun before going to this school. it's pretty much luck of the draw with classes and how good the teachers are, and the teacher is what academically makes you or breaks you when talking about final grades. i also wish i would've known the complete full list of extracurricular activities to chose from, theres so many, and its hard to find out about whats going on around campus.
