Michigan Technological University Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Ted

Very hard. They push you hard.

With Michigan Tech being a smaller university the class sizes are smaller and the professors try to get to know you on a personal level. Professors also generally encourage students to come to office hours to ask questions. That is one of the aspects that drew me in. Also students spend a lot of time studying and there are a lot of opportunity to find groups to study in. The education at Michigan Tech is geared toward the work force. We do things that the industry is doing that way when we go into the industry we know what to do and how to do it.

Each of my professors knows my name, if not knows me on some personal level. Some of my favorite classes have been design oriented, with intense concentration on learning the Adobe Suite. It's absolutely vital to go to class and be eager to learn and keep moving forward with the class material. Students are not overly competitive, nearly all the students in my classes are more than willing to meet to discuss and further their knowledge about classes.

Academics at Michigan Tech are very strong. Due to the lower number of students per faculty, you, as a student, can very easily get to know your professors well. This also creates a very high expectation for the students. I am a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and because my class size is smaller (~30) I feel it to be a very competitive environment.

Michigan Tech has built a reputation as being one of the best tech-schools in the nation. This is because of a tough lineup of course requirements and great learning opportunities. The classes can get up to 250 people in a lecture hall and can be around 30 people in a classroom. on the other hand, you could have a class with 12 people total. if you want personal contact from your professor that is up to you. Each professor has office hours where you can visit them. The smaller classes might not need this but you can't expect a teacher to remember 200 students' names. Students can get help with classes the find tough by going to office hours with the teacher or going to the learning center on that subject. There are many students that will study together as well or RA's will make study session socials. But you have to remember that you're going to college to learn things; you don't want to just skate on through already knowing everything.
