What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Emily

By far the most popular activities are hockey and broomball. The Michigan Tech hockey team is the only Division 1 team that we have and the school and community support them wholeheartedly. The arena is completely packed every home game. We have the best time singing along to the pep band songs and cheering our Huskies to victory. Our other major activity is broomball. It is a sport open to all students that is similar to hockey but it is done with brooms and no skates. It is a great sport that nearly everyone in the school participates in by either playing or watching. It is a great way to have fun in the cold and spend time with all of your friends.

Ted

Skiing, broomball, and hockey.

For being a small school, the Greek system is a pretty active part of Michigan Tech and many students become involved. Also, a lot of people create student groups every year so I feel like there is something new to check out every Fall. For example, back when I was a freshman, they had a prominent Paranormal Investigation group that I joined and we went on actual paranormal investigations around town, along with a set of official equipment and post-investigation client meetings. It was an incredible experience and provided a professional as well as entertaining value. Unfortunately, Tech is deemed a decent party school and I have seen the party scene. Participation, though, is ALWAYS optional. If you go to a party and don't want to drink, students are usually okay with that and won't be foul or try to make you drink. It's nice because if your hallmates want to go out together, you can go out knowing you won't be hassled. There are plenty of other things to do besides socializing though! Michigan Tech offers a wide range of events on campus including speakers, concerts through the radio station, and free movies on the weekends (big screen, theater quality, and before released on DVD!). I've spent many years attending these events and they've become a big part of my campus life. Every year the radio station holds a huge music festival in April, headlining some pretty diverse and talented musicians. It has become a ritual for me.

Greek life is big in any university no matter where you are, but Michigan Tech has more than just that our student run organizations are big and old and friendly. We have comedians, writers, authors, political figures and much more coming out to speak to the students and that's just Friday night.

There are so many different activities going on at Tech! During the winter there is broomball- all students get involved whether they are playing or just watching! There are movies played on campus every weekend, athletic events, religious groups, academic clubs, theater, guest speakers, shows, concerts, etc. The students are all supportive of each other and usually there is a huge crowd at home athletic events. There is something for everyone here!

Some of the most popular activities at our school include drinking, intramural sports, student organizations, and fraternities/sororities. I myself participate in a lot of different intramural sports. Michigan Tech has a lot of interesting ones you can participate in like oozball and broomball. Oozball is volleyball played in the mud and broomball is like hockey except played with brooms and no ice skates. They are both a ton of fun and the great thing is, anyone can play. I only lived in the dorms for one semester up here, but it was amazing and also how I met all of my current friends. We all lived in the same hall my freshman year and we have been living with each other ever since. The RA's in the dorms like to schedule lots of hall activities so it makes meeting new people and friends a lot easier. Another good thing about Tech (especially if you're a girl) is that it's really easy to find a date. I was only up here for a month and I found my current boyfriend of 2 years. He lived across the hall from me in the dorms and we hit it off right away. The night scene up here (even if you're under 21) is also a ton of fun. There is almost always something going on somewhere whether it be a school related event or a frat party down the road. The biggest thing to look forward to every year at Michigan Tech is our famous Winter Carnival. Winter Carnival is the biggest party time of the year. EVERYONE on campus comes out for it along with many students from all over the state. It is a bunch of fun and we get almost a whole week off of school just to celebrate it!

One of the most popular student activities is broom ball. This sport has it's own newspaper, bracket system, tournament, and even live webcams that you can view online. Tons of students make their own teams and play broom ball right on campus. During the winter months when broom ball is played, talk of the most recent or upcoming games are all that you can hear about in the halls.

At Michigan Tech there are close to 250 student organizations so picking the most popular ones would be tough. The biggest contender would be the Pep Band because it has the most people. There are a lot of intramural sports that are popular like broomball and ultimate frisbee. There are so many activities going on that you couldn't possibly go to them all! There are camping and hiking trips, a biking club, leadership activities, theater projects, LAN parties and many more. There are tons of things to do on the weekend if you don't want to be stuck in your room. If there aren't any cool socials going on in your building then there are sporting events to go to and the biggest lecture hall plays 3 dollar movies Friday and Saturday. You could also go off campus to the card shop in town, if that's your thing, or go to the bowling alley close by. At Michigan Tech all you have to do is ask what's going on and I bet you'd find something fun you wanna do.
