Mills College Top Questions

The Mills community is incredibly diverse, in every arena including sexual orientation, identity, socio-economic status, race, religion, etc. It's impossible to describe a "typical" Mills student, as everyone is truly unique. Students from all backgrounds get along. My friend group contains representatives of a myriad of sexual orientation, pronoun use, fashion sense, socio-economic status and taste in music. Most students are either from California, including quite a few from the San Diego to L.A. County area, as well as Bay Area students. The biggest "transplant" group is the students who are from the East Coast. Students are very politically aware and active, on all different fronts. Most students have at least one political or social cause that they are deeply passionate about. In my experience, however, there tends to be a high degree of respect among opposing opinions and healthy discussion between them. I think students are success-oriented in that they want to do something substantial in the world, change it for the better, or built themselves a good life. I don't think most are income-oriented so much as they are outcome-oriented. Students who are uncomfortable with gender, sexual orientation, or racial diversity will not be comfortable at Mills.

If you judge individuals for any reason then this school is not for you. Very accepting of all shapes, sizes and flavors of people. Sometimes people think that only very wealthy girls attend Mills - this is far from the norm. Many girls work or obtain financial aid and work extremely hard.

We have a wide range of racial and religious groups on campus. Socio-economic groups range due to grants from financial aid. We also have a large lesbian community here. Men are often a rare sight on campus. If they are seen, they stick out like a sore thumb. I often wear pajamas to class. Sometimes, I just slap on some clothes and run to class after taking a shower. I often see people with clothes on from PE or a dance class. Professors do not mind. Much of the population is liberal and very vocal. Discussions in the dining hall are frequent and interesting. Many of the students are politically active and aware (participate in rallies).

Intelligent, fierece, strong, talented, accepting, loving, fun women.

My classmates have been the kindest, most friendly people I have ever met, always saying hi and starting a conversation, and leaving unexpected gifts for our entire hall merely out of their own thoughtfulness.

They are motivated and strong women who believe in what they say.

They are intellectual, open minded, well read, stylish, creative, music loving, and polite. They also have a good sense of humor.

Small school about 1,000 kids total counting undergrads & grads. All races, backgrounds, genders, ethnicity's etc are welcome here. I work for students with disabilities and we have great resources for them even note takers. You would feel out of place if you are a republican, but even so people won't attack you.

Students are very liberal--accepting of everyone and open to all views and opinions, and active--almost everyone is involved in at least 2-3 clubs, have work study, and is dedicated to community service.

My classmates are very open-minded and often humorous as well.

My classmates at Mills College have all been friendly, open-minded, and motivated to work toward their goals. They are a group that are able to think outside the box, and use the resources available to them to really customize their education to suit their needs and interests.

Very interested in school strictly. Not really into partying.

I don't know them very well because I live off campus.

My classmates are usually nice, but keep to themselves. When they have a set group of friends, they usually only stick to that group. But when i need notes or somethings, usually someone is willing to let me borrow them. But i also feel discriminated against because of my race. Some students keep to their groups of a certain ethnicity and look down on others.

My classmates include a wonderful assortment of the rich, the poor, the eccentric , the street-wise, the ghetto-fabulous, the naiive, the hip, the tragic, the hopelessly uncool, the smugly uncool, the nerd chic, the queer chic, the science queers, the millsbians, the old lady activists, all of us poets, and all of us squarely in love with our school.
