What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Shari

Being that Morgan State University is predominately a "black school" there are many stereotypes that come with the territory, such as Morgan students not being as educated or knowledgable as students at other schools. There are so many opportunities placed in front of you while attending Morgan State, its just a matter of actually putting yourself in that position. Although you are surrounded by the "urban life" of Baltimore you get to embrace it for what it really is, you not only learn from going to classes and listening to your professors, but you learn how to deal with reality itself.

Artea

One of the main sterotypes at Morgan State University is that this is a university whose students focus mainly on partying. However this sterotype is not completely accurate because even thought the students at the university go out and know how to have fun, the main focus on the campus is academics.

Sakeena

A stereotype prevalent amongst the students at Morgan State University is that they are mainly concerned with partying. A lot of people ask "Do you go to Morgan? I heard that's a party school." That is clearly not the case. Although a lot of students do attend parties, most students I know do not and are focused majorly on their academic studies. Students that I know that do attend parties have a balance. They understand they must complete their school work and then enjoy the night life.

The common stereotype of students at my school are that most students are from less affluent areas of Baltimore City which implies that most students come from battered and unstable backgrounds. This misconception and unfair stereotype is not accurate. Morgan State University has a diverse student body ranging from students who are originally from countries like Nigeria and as far as Nepal.

Nia

Often, when I tell someone that I am a student at Morgan State University people light up and are immediately interested in my studies and campus life. Morgan State has the stereotype of being a party school and although we do like to have fun, Morgan students have a great amount of school pride that we take to class and on the field; you can feel it coming from school faculty, professors, alumni, current student, and the student to come!

Christine

My school is filled with many different type of stereotypes. Many students fall into the category of individuals. Although, there are some who are followers. We have many people who march to the beat of their own drum. They are all here for the purpose of receiving an education, while bettering and finding their selves. Some people may classify the people in my school as common hood rats, wasting tax dollars. But I feel that the people just like the experience are what you make it. Attending this school you are guaranteed to meet fun, exciting people who will impact your lives forever.

Jocks are horrible people to be in relationships with. Greeks or "Frat boys" are smooth and cocky, not all of them but most of them. There are various promotions groups on campus to for off campus club events. The people in these promotional groups are some of the most popular students on campus, everyone knows who they are.

Charlene

Many may believe that all HBCU (Historically Black College or University) schools are nothing but black kids who smoke, drink, and party and don't go to class, but I'm here to set a new wave in many peoples beliefs. Morgan State University is a HBCU and we are at a high rise of new enrollments and highter graduation percentages. Morgan State has grown 7{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} in new enrollment since the election of our new president David Wilson. The belief that HBCU schools don't or can't graduate thier students are completly inaccurate and very damaging to the future prospective students to come.

Ayana

One stereotype about Morgan State University students is that we are a party promoting school. This stereotype is simply that - a stereotype. Many party-goers are the same student leaders who excel in promoter greater causes with community service on and off campus.

Akinremi

Some common stereotypes about individuals at Morgan State university who are, jocks, frat kids, or Greeks, are that their consider the small group of students on campus that somewhat don’t earn their positions in which they hold within the institution. Many believe that because they are part of the Greek life they receive special benefits for their association with the specific organization. Students also believe so positive things about individuals that are associated with Greek and frat organization, for example based on my experience with interacting with these people majority of them have great leadership skills and are great when it comes to academics.

Shirley

Because Morgan State University is an HBCU , the views of it are outragous . They claim your education will not be considered valued next to a TWI. this is not true Morgan state provides various oppertunities and some are even considered over the TWI students . There are also the party stertotypes. All colleges have parties . Morgan state student center parties abstain from alchohal use and drug use. How you come is how you come . There are different cutures and everyone excepts everyone . the greek Life is a big example of this . No matter your culture , race or religion , you are still accepted

From the conversations and articles I have witnessed over the years, I have heard Morgan State University being stereotyped, or "crowned" as one of the most highly recognized and successful Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the nation. As an HBCU, Morgan State University values the influence and positive messages relayed by the students in their Greek Letter organizations because they encourage unity, scholarship, and service to the community. They also take pride in the accomplishments of their engineering department; which is nationally ranked third for awarding bachelors degrees to African Americans. With all this said, the stereotypes I have heard describing Morgan State University's students have been, Greek, Engineers, and Athletes. And to this date, I find that to be highly accurate.

Paul

- More than half of the school population has aids. No! because not everyone gets tested on Morgans' campus - Morgan state has a lot of drugs dealers. No! because when you think of black people, people think of drugs. - Morgan state is in an dangerous environment. No! because its in a black area. - The students at Morgan are ghetto. No! because not everyone is ghetto. - Students pick Morgan it as the last resort. No! because students thought it would be easy to get in.

zita

i am studying in black university, the current stereotype is that foreigners are smarter than African Americans

Sagirah

I believe, as for most schools, that Morgan State University has all types of stereotypes at the school. We have many members of sports teams, members of fraternities and sororities, students involved in school organizations, students that focus on nothing by education. Like all schools, our atmosphere is encompassed by many different students, cultures, and backgrounds and it helps bring overall unity to the school. Meaning that there is not one type of group that you always see or seen as the popular students. A new student coming or looking to come will be able to find students and groups that they can fit in to and relate to.

Rasheda

Among the common stereotypes heard at my school are the fact that Morgan is a big party school and students are not serious about their work. This is absolutely false. Morgan has very intense programs for their students and most want to graduate and do well. If you stay focused you will succeed at Morgan.

LassandraJones

The stereotypes at my school are the party promoters, SGA, Greeks, athletes and scholars. The stereotypes are accurate.

Jerica

People assume that there is no way to find out information about upcoming events and deadlines occuring on campus. Th truth is students can easily gain access to this information by simply checking websis and their morgan state email .

Falisha

The common stereotype of Morgan is that its a party school, with out of control students who have unprotected sex and fight. This stereotype is not accurate. Though everyone likes to have a good time, it is more than frowned upon to be the failure in one's group of friends. Because we know that not only as an HBCU we are scrutinized but also by those who simply expect us to fail, success is not an option, and students are sure to lift as they climb the ladder to success

Joseph

One of the stereo types at Morgan State University is that classes are easier because it is a Historically Black College/University. This is not accurate because the professors at the university are all highly qualified and many of them are Morgan Alumn. As an African American student, I enjoy the university because I am not only learning college level information, but I learn a lot more about black history then i could learn at a non HBCU.

Kylea

Before I went to Morgan, I heard stereotypes that Morgan students focus on partying a lot. Now, this stereotype is not completely accurate. Partying is a part of the college life that many students indulge in. But other than attending parties with their spare time, many students focus on some of the many different organizations on campus, whether they are volunteer organizations, greek letter organizations and others.

Chauntia

The stereotype of students at Morgan are that they are lazy, party animals, and not in school to learn but to have fun. This stereotype is completely wrong the students here are very focused on school and are highly intelligent, with any school there are slackers but as long as you are strong-minded the distractions will not affect you.

George

The stereotype for students at Morgan State University is similar to ones at most HBCU's, that we all like to party and do not take our academics serious. Although these stereotypes do stem from a grain a truth is does not hold valid for the entire student body.

Jody

There really is not any type of stereotype at Morgan State University. Students just choose whether they want to be associated by a lot of people or by a certain few. Of course we have the usual athletes, frats guys, and "geeks" but at Morgan people rarely think of it in that kind of fashion. People choose who they want to know. This would mean that there is no accurate stereotype at Morgan State.

Tarsha

The stereotype for Morgan State University students is that they are ran by our Greek organizations and that students there focus more on partying than they do academics. this stereotype holds some truth but it mainly a falsity. Many of the leaders at Morgan State University, including members of the Student Government Association (SGA), are affiliated with Greek Organizations but that is not what got them to their positions. The SGA at Morgan State is full of bright, driven students that want to create a better social and learning environment for their fellow Morganites. As far as being a party school is concerned, Morgan State University's Student Organizations do hold occasional parties for the students but it is not the basis for social life at Morgan. They also offer educational, social, and even inspirational and motivational forums for the students. Morgan State University students understand the need to balance a social life and academics and the stereotype of them being solely socially driven is indeed false.

Jeffrey

The stereotype is that of most students is that they are all alone tyring to complete coursework for their respective degrees.

Sammie

A common misconception is that most of the students are undertaking work that isn't challenging; that is far from the truth. There are classes at MSU that are easier than others, but most work can be difficult and will require a student to be very thorough and meticulous in their assignments. Students are also thought to be slackers because they attend a historically black university.

Diane

The school gives itself the stereotype of being a "black" college when in fact Morgan State University has been a state college for over 40 years and open to people of all colors. I am not on campus enough to note if there are groups such as jocks, geeks, or stoners. I'm sure there are stereotypes, but I try to keep my focus on my classes and school work.

Titilope

The common stereotype for Morgan State students is that the students are not necessarily serious individuals and that they are only focused on parties and fashion. This sterotype is absolutely FALSE. While the students are fashionable and are fun to be around, the majority are very serious individuals who are able to manage campus involvement as well as maintain a high G.P.A.

Stazi

I think the common stereotypes of students attending my university is the fact Morgan has a huge population of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. From my point of view I believe at least 40 percent of the male population on campus are openly gay and 30 percent of females are lesbian or bisexual.

Angela

The stereotype of students at Morgan State University is that students are always "partying" and careless about their academics. However, this stereotype is not necessarily accurate because there are a lot of students who are very serious about their school work. There are so many students on scholarships who have to maintain their GPA's in order to keep the scholarships so they must study and work hard. This proves the stereotype to be inaccurate.

Kilan

The stereotype of Morgan State students is that all we do is party. Morgan State women think that campus is a runway and men are just looking for a way to get over. This is definitely not true. College is what you make it, and though the people you see the most may just be interested in partying and making quick money, there are more students dedicated to schoolwork and quality extracurricular activities.

Ashley

The setreotype of students who attend Morgan State University, are based around Morgan being a "Party University". Though Morgan allows ample opportunity for partying our university is a research institution, that focuses soley on the advancement of our students.

Daryl

One common stereotype is that Morgan is a party school. From personal experience, I don't see morgan as a party school. Since Morgan is a dry campus drinking is not allowed and many on campus "house-parties" are shut down. If one really wants to party one must go off campus. The college experience is based on your individual choices. If you want to party it is your choice to do so realizing that your decision may affect your academic performance. For some reason students at Morgan are said to be promiscuous. I remember hearing this before I applied. This is not accurate in the least. Of course some individuals are that way which is probably true at any school but most of the people that I know are not promiscuous at all and have stable relationships with their boyfriend/girlfriend. It is very important not to suscribe to stereotypes and to talk to actual students.

kaylah

Some stereotypes that exist at Morgan are stereotypes such as since Morgan is a HBCU all the students are black. False. Morgan State's campus is majority blacks but there are some White and Latino students that attend Morgan. Another stereotype is that all the athletic students are stuck up and rude. False. The athletes are very driven and motivated students.

Courtney

The stereotype at my school is not accurate but there groups that do hang out on campus and are known by many. Like the football and basketball players, frat brothers, sorority sister, etc.

Kwasi

The stereotype of students at my school is that we party a lot and it is accurate. If you are the type that likes to party, the parties will be here waiting for you everyday.

Osarenmwinda

We can classify students in my school from demographic structure to the ethnic groups. From close observation the institution is more of the black race and has close to 45{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} to 65{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} foreign students.

Chakiris

I have attended Morgan State University since 2007 and noticed there are a variety of students on campus. I have noticed that most students here at Morgan are serious about gaining an education and gear towards obtaining their goals. Such students are professional and it is evident in the way they act, dress, promote themselves and others on and off campus.

Grant

I think some of the common stereotypes at Morgan State University are that students are criminals, stoners and hooligans. A lot of people hear Baltimore and automatically think of HBO's "The Wire" and the stereotypical characters created in that show. As a non-traditional student who has attended school elsewhere in the past, I can honestly say that Morgan State University is a hidden gem. I have met some of the most intellectual and creative individuals within my time here at Morgan. I will not say that you don’t have some of the stereotypes alive on campus, but it is definitely hidden by the massive amounts of positive and goal oriented students at MSU.

Karachi

Afro-centric, party school, big on organizational affiliation

Oluwatobi

Frat Kids

One of the most common misconceptions about Morgan State is that we only party beyond belief. However, this is extremely untrue. We have a clubs and organizations on campus that all not only promote academic excellence, but service to the community and to your particular major. So though we do like to party like have fun (and we do like to have fun!), we prioritize and handle our studies first!

Sean

Morgan state contains many different kinds of people so the most common stereotype will be stoners and yes it is very accurate.

Jonathan

Common Stereotypes of people at Morgan State are partiers, ghetto, under achievers, and violent. Contrary to the negative stereotypes, all of them are in fact very false. Morgan State is known for excelling in not only sports, but academics as well. Morgan State produces the most black engineers in the state. Being an Electrical Engineering student, I can definitely say that the engineering program is by far the most challenging program that I’ve been a part of. Moreover the crime rate on campus isn't as high as other schools in the Baltimore area. Students from all over (California, New York, New Jersey, and Florida) come to Morgan State. This college is not just a school for Baltimoreans or city people. Anyone who wants a since of family, pride, and belonging can attend this campus. The beautiful campus is about 20 minutes from the inner harbor.

Brittany

I believe that there are no stereotypes here at my University , yes we have different organizations and groups but I know that our school comes together to promote pride and spirit.

Mansa

Students at Morgan State University are often put in two separate stereotypical categories which are direct opposites of each other. Most of these stereotypes are based on how the students dress and present themselves. The students that try to represent a demoralizing society that is based on the ignorant presentation of the hip-hop culture by media are the students that are stereotyped as ignorant thugs even though some of these students have 3.5 grade point average (gpa). But, since the student walks around with his pants sagging or she dresses presenting to much skin, or he or she uses four letter words, that student will be stereotyped as a bad student. The other side of the stereotypes of Morgan students are those that present themselves well. Some students at Morgan where a shirt and tie just about everyday of the week and use a much more expanded vocabulary then four letter words. The student might be involved in SGA also and on the resume will look rather flattering but then their performance in the classroom will be a 2.5 gpa. Students at Morgan State University are often wrongfully stereotyped and associated with the inner city surroundings of Baltimore instead of separately categorized as students that are trying to make difference in the community. It is a cliche statement, but Morgan students are the perfect example of you can not judge a book by it's cover.
