What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Janice

I would tell myself that a college degree was much more important than I originally thought.! When I graduated from High School, college was an option; however, many students in my rural community chose to work, marry, and begin families. Many of my former classmates (like myself) have chosen to return to college and obtain a degree to fullfill our inner most desires and dreams. My dream has been to return to school so that I can teach and share life's lessons, job experiences, and knowledge of the hospitality industry to others that wish to persue this field of interst.

I would tell myself to stay focused on class and not worry too much about the nightlife. I would also tell myself to make sure to make all morning classes, waking up can be hard but missing classes can really affect your grades. Also, make sure to not wait last minute on long essays. You should start ahead of time and make sure to be thorough. I would also tell me not to stay out too late because it can affect your grades. Also, make the most of your weekends, it is a break that you should use wisely. For Spring Break always visit some where different, the vacation is a good experience for you. Work hard, as hard as you can, during summers to save up as much money to make the school year easier. Keep in touch with your best friends from high school and your first friends of college. Stay committed to your hobbies, you don't have to dump them when you enter college, you can still have fun. Last of all I would tell myself that the experience is what you make it.

Rachel

I would tell myself to be more open, to allow people to get to know me fully. Study is more then key to success, to make more time for rest. Spend time with your friends, the closer you get to them, the more you can help them and the more they can help you. Don't be selfish with your spare time, if you have extra time, give it up to someone who needs help. Be willing to learn, and to teach. Take your time there is no need to rush your life, you have time, slow down a bit. Take the time to call your family, they know how to help you more then most people do. Most importantly have fun, if you make school boring you'll never make it!

Linda

Some of the most important advise that I would give myself would be to try my best in all my classes in high school. I would also tell myself to apply for more scholerships during my senior year.

Christina

If I were to go back in time to when i was a senior, there would be much advice i'd give to myself. I would tell myself to focus on the transition of high school to college. How can I ensure that I have the money and cooperation to be in college. I would also advise that college is way different and you need to be more use to being in school more often. Also how it takes up alot of time and studying. I would also advise myself that college is worth it at all costs. Be focused and enjoy your studys and time in college.

Cindy

Hello Cindy, welcome to this life you chose. Senior year you worked hard but didnt apply to enough scholarships. You were forced to take out loans. This is you, regretting. College is different. Pay attention, be active. It's hard sometimes and you might pull all nighters. This is you, procrastinating (and trying to change). You will meet people from different backgrounds. In El Paso, more than 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population is Hispanic, now you are the minority. You will learn that you are more judgmental than you thought, but in the process you will become more tolerant. This is you, open minded. You will make friendships that will last a life time. This is you, socializing. You will need to be more responsible and independent. Your mom wont come in at 6:30 to tell you to wake up. This is you, maturing. I know this is overwhelming. There will be times when you doubt yourself and wonder what you are doing with your life. This is you, learning. I'm not sure if you can completely prepare but it's a heads up for what is to come. This is living your life. Be ready to be surprised.

April

Be open-minded. Some people will try to discourage you from accomplishing your goals but when you put your mind to it anything is possible. If your having trouble on campus, ask. People will suprise you at how much they want to help you. Especially professors, find one that you know you can rely on and keep in touch with them through-out and even after your college career. Make good impressions on teachers, they can and will help you succeed. Do not let the amount of work required for your degree discourage you from doing what you want. You can and will make it through college. And you will be successful, if you put your all into your degree.

Rachel

If I could go back in time and talk to myself I think I would tell myself to start being more frugal because college is very expensive. I would tell myself that choosing a college that is far away from home is probably not the best plan there is. I should choose a college based on where I want to go not the place that seems like all my friends are going. A lot of my high school goes to NMSU and I thought I would like that but if I could go back in time I would want to tell myself that people do not change over night and the drama that happened during high school will still be going on in college.

Laura

Since I got married before I graduated high school I missed out on a lot. I waited a whole year before enrolling in college so If I could go back in time I would tell myself "school shouldn't wait, go now, and don't get married now". I was married to someone who didnt acknowledge me and he brought me down for a while but now I'm free as a bird. I look foward to my career and I love where I'm going in life. Under all the circumstances and situations I''ve been though I always give one hundred percent in school. It is very important for me to suceed and better myself with a career so no matter if I could go back in time I feel like no one can stop me from achieving my goals.

Caitlin

I would definitely go back to high school and let myself know as well as my other classmates know to take classes that will pertain to college general education requirements. There are ways to be in high school and take college credit and it would have been great to have gotten a lot of my pre-requisites out of the way. This would have been useful information to consider, considering that while in high school, the school will pay for high school students to take college credit courses.

Going back in time...now there's something everyone thinks about, if we could we would but we cannot, and what's done is done and nothing can change that, except to improve the current situation. There are three things that i would advise my high school senior self to do. One is to save up as much money as possible so that i would be financially stable. Two I would also recommend that i take a few summer community college courses before i start my actual college career, so that i would not have to take a bunch of required general ed classes where i already know the course material; in which brings back to helping me financially. Finally i would tell myself to be more open in learning new things, making new friends, and of course, getting my life together. It took me my first two semesters to see what is expected at this university, academically, and if i could go back in time, i would advise myself to get my life together, and prioritze the important things in my life, which add up to being a high school psychologist.

Samantha

If i could go back I would tell advise myself to work harder so that my GPA would get me scholarships so I wouldn't have to worry about how I am going to afford school. Loans are not what I want to have to look forward to paying off when I am done with school. I would tell myself to focus harder and not try to just get by. If only I could go back things for me now would be a lot different and I would not be struggling. High school GPA and test scores are everything I wish every student knew that.

Kristen

Be ready for anything. You never know what life will bring. Be more outgoing, but don't lose yourself.

Greg

During the transition into College don?t stress and be overwhelmed. New Mexico State University is a great University and has plenty to offer and great people to meet. The professors are amazing and will do anything in their power to help you accomplish your goals so don?t be worried. Experience dorm life and put yourself out there to meet new people and join plenty of extra curricular activities and donate some time to charities, it will pay off!

DuShaun

fill out as many scholarships and grants as you can and enjoy life.

Olivia

Develop better study skills and note taking skills. Figure out my priorities and set goals for myself. Always strive for the best and push myself 110{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to work much harder on financial aid applications. I had a good GPA in high school and a good variety of extracirricular activities, which helped me to get into an elite college. I was able to attend that college for a year before tuition became too expensive for my family. If I had worked harder on the financial aid application for that school, I might have had more funding and still attended my first-choice school instead of transferring to NMSU. Even now, I still tell myself to work harder on financial aid applications because while my undergraduate degree at NMSU is paid for by a full-ride scholarship, my dream of becoming a lawyer is stilll unfunded. I do not know how I will pay for law school, and the wisdom that I would pass on to myself as a high school senior still applies as a college sophmore.

Caitlin

Knowing what I know now, I would go back to my senior year and take school more seriously. School is the future and with out it, people could not obtain prospective jobs and be truly satisfied in their career. Knowing how important it is to get a proper education now, I would have not slacked so much in high school. In fact, I would have taken all my classes much more seriously and would have done more research on future career choices. It is very important to be sure what you want to do before you go to college, however; it truly is the experiences that each individual has in college that molds that particular student into who they are today. This is extremely important and vital for the success of a student in college life. Though, if I were given the chance to go back, I probably would not take it because the journey that I have had so far has been far more worth it not knowing what is to come but learning what will be!

Samantha

I would tell myself to keep working hard. That even though there are several trials and tribulations ahead of me, if I keep doing what I am doing since now, over coming them wont be hard. Also that its okay to be frustrated, to cry, to be happy and generally show emotion. Growing up is hard and no matter what happens I have an amazing support system of family, and friends to help me when I need it. The last thing I would tell myself, is that its okay to ask for help, when I need it.

Angel

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior the advice that I would give to young Angel would be to not be afraid of having to work and go to school at the same time because one day you will eventually graduate and the whole agony that you will have to go through will later be one of the best times in life.

Sarah

Do not take college lightly.

Nolan

I would tell myself to take more AP classes so that I could be at a better pace than I am now, and to apply for more scholarships to help pay for books and tutution.

Christina

To study harder and longer, not stay out so late on nights before a test, save more money!! Focus and school and everything else will fall into place. Don't worry about laundry when you have a 7 page paper due the next day.

Talia

Well I haven't decided quite yet if it is better to pursue the dream school of keep the loans at a minimum. My majors are both Kinesiology and Journalism, so NMSU works because it's an accredited Journalsim school and also one of the few with a Kinesiology program. I would probably tell myself to just go to NMSU, I've met great friends and people and have excellent opportunities. I wish I could have afforded out of state tuition of course, however I remind myself that cutting costs now helps my dream to study abroad in Austria next year. Plus, college is college there are great people and opportunities wherever you go.

Miranda

Be smart with your money. Jobs are hard to come by and you're going to need to pay for important things later. Don't be afraid to speak up, speak out, or otherwise make yourself heard. There are people out there who are just as interested in the same things as you are, and they love to hear from you. Grow and blossom.

Alexandra

I would tell my past self to get more involved in campus activities and socialize more. Also, to work harder in my classes to get the grade I know I could have gotten if I had just tried harder. I would also tell my senior self to get a job and save up money for college.

Katrina

I would tell myself to not worry. You don't have to have your life mapped out before you even choose your college. College is the time for you to explore your options, find out what you want from life and work towards that goal. Live your life with happiness.

Kendra

I would have to say to myself, " Really think about what is important in life, what are your priorities. A higher ACT score and a better grade in English could have saved you a lot of money. Sure, you were homecoming queen, part of major food fights and had a huge group of friends, but i think some of that time could have been sacrificed. As boring as school is and as much as you hate it now, you're going to regret being so lazy."

Eaaron

I would tell myself to study more and focus, save more money and to really listen to the teaches because they are really trying to get you ready for college and not just trying to scare me because college is real and its hard to dont mess up now because you don't want to mess up your future because your future starts now.

Rodrigo

Have fun and meet as many people as you did, but make sure you study and get good grades. It is not enough to get by with a 2.0. You are here to fullfil a life long dream so make sure you realize that everything you do, including grades, is as spectacular as your dreams. You deserve to be surrounded by the best so make sure you pay it forward to all of those that choose to surround themselves with you, they deserve it too. Finally, life is truly what you make it so don't stress and remember that there is a whole crew of paid faculty that is here for your success. Don't forget to thank them.

Manuel

iIf you are asenior hugh school student, or a person that wants to go to college, but doesn't know what university is the best choice for you. You need to look for a university that offers great education and have proffesors with experience based on their material. Also look for a college in which their staff have a great communication with their students based on finacial aid, scholarshps, job opportunities, and great communications.

Samantha

To find the right college you first have to think of what direction your taking in live. What is the student going to learn and what career are they most interested in. If your not sure then pick the college that works with what you have. Some colleges require essays, tests, and applications but if you really want to attend then you should go for it. Any college can help lead students in the right direction and will help them find the career that fits them best. College is a great experience and I think that you learn so many things that can help you in your future.

Eric

Go to a friendly enviroment, where the campus is not to big, where you can walk from one side of campus to the other with out taking a bus or driving. Everything you need to be able to access is on campus. Have good teachers, that have experience is some way, where there average people graduating is higgher then there drop out rate.

Edwin

When looking for the right college for youself or for you children one should look for a college that has a program that your child or you are interested in. If you find a place with a major you actually care about you will do better not only at that college but in your life in general. It is crucial that you are interested in what you are doing in college, otherwise you will be tempted to not go to class and not do your homework, and you will probably end up failing out of school.

Stephanie

Make sure that the school you're looking at has the right major for you, if you are undecided, make sure they have at least two or three possible majors. Look out for prices on meal plans and campus housing-it is important that you check out different plans and/or alternatives that might best suit your child. Be sure to check out how safe the campus is, and how effective security is. Investigate whether the campus police are set or volunteers, and how they are hired. Check out volunteering groups, fraternities, or other clubs that you might be interested in-it's a great way to make friends and become a part of your community. Make an appointment with an advisor to set your schedule that way the advisor can make sure to help you be on the right track-you don't want to fall behind on your studies, or off track. Try to be involved in activities related to your major.

Molly

Look at all of your options. I was mainly foucusing on out of state colleges in my college search, but realized that NMSU has a degree plan perfect for me. Dont dismiss state schools. Also, look at things such as housing, if the food is actually good, and talk to students at the schools you are considering, they can tell you how the school REALLY is! College should be hard work, but fun too.

heather

Take advantage of in-state lato scholarships rather then leaving half way accrose the country for a college you might not stay at for very long.

Alexandra

Well, I personally believe that college is not only about academics. I think that it is very important to find a college that can be a little sparatic. I think that in order to achieve the most of your college experience a college needs to be located in a "college town" this will allow for students to interact with students. Volunteering and intramural opportunities are also important because this will get you involved with friends and people that you dont know who untimatley could become friends for life. I believe that sororities and fraternites are important because they get you involved with the school, with other opportunities, and open a whole new door of experiences. Academically a school should be focused on the students and have every opportunity available to them. Chosing a school that YOU want is usually what is best for you. Do some research, and come up with what fits your personality and career goals.

Aurora

My advice to you is really research all colleges and universities as much as possible. Visit and speak to as many people as you can before you decide on one. Speak to alumni and professors with any and all questions you may have. Remember the first semester is a big change do not freak out just take it a day at a time and everything will mellow down as time goes on.

Mindy

Look into as many colleges as possible before making a final decision. It is good to know your options and what all is out there. Go visit schools too so you can have a feel for the places you could possibly attend. If you have a better idea of the schools you are interested in it will lead to a much easier decision in the end. Look at every aspect of the school not just the name or where it is located. Colleges all have so much to offer in their own individual way so research and see all those details each school has that isnt seen on the surface. You could change your mind and end up somewhere you never expected like me. And you might just end up loving it! I know i sure do.

RJ

GO where you want to go and where you will feel comfortable. Choose between being close to home, or farther away. You will do your best and learn more when you are comfortable and motivated.

Catherine

The advice I would give parents or students in finding the right college is to visit the campus and talk to different students and ask them what they think of the college they are attending and about the people at the college. I would tell them to check into the college to see if they have the available courses that they are interested in learning about. They may also be able to talk to an adviser and ask them questions they may have about the programs available and other things they may have questions about.

Aaron

College is an experience, it's not just about the learning. It helps define you as a person and in order to do that you need a place that can manifest that in you.

Jessica

It's true you should pick a school that is strongly focused on academia, but college is more than just going to classes. It's about the overall expierence you get from your school. Make sure you pick a school that will stimulate you socially just as much as it stimulates you mentally. In the real world it's not just about what you know but who you know. College is the best time to start making the connections and friends that will last a lifetime.

This college provides many oppurtunities and the faculty encourage the students to continue to pursue graduate and doctoral degrees. The community around Las Cruces, NM. is a friendly environment. There are many community service oppurtunities to allow students to get out and meet new friends as well as people from the community. Many community members are graduates from the University, so they also encourge students to succeed. My experience has been great and the education that is offered is one of the best in the nation for engineering. I believe it is ranked in the top 50 schools for best price and quality of education. The class sizes are just perfect and the professors get to know the students and communicate to you by name. The area where the college is located in Southern New Mexico and the heritage of the local people can be experienced and good food is always easy to find.

Elizabeth

I think it would be good to select a college that is not too large or heavily populated. Small town colleges offer more personalized attention. Look for calming estheticly pleasant surroundings. Picture yourself reading or studying there. Personal safety should also be a consideration. How is the food? Is there transportation available? How convenient is it to get from class to class? Secondly, I want to emphasize the importance of being focused and dedicated to your educational plan. It takes a lot of time and energy, along with determination and self eficacy to do well in your studies. This time should be set aside as priority time for learning. Other activities must take a lesser priority on the totem pole. Attitude and enthusiasm are other important attributes one should strive for. A positive attitude and lots of enthusiasm for projects and assignments are worth striving for. Finally, really get involved in the activities and social life on campus, because it will really enhance and enrich your educational experience. It gives you an opportunity for networking, which offers much valuable information and valuable tips and solutions for various dilemas you may encounter. Most of all, enjoy this priviledged opportunity of education!

Lauren

My advice to any student and/or parent about finding the college that will fit them would be to first off decide what area of study you are interested. If you are unsure then find a college that is diverse in the majors they offer. Second, decide how far away you want to be from home and the type of weather that you would prefer to live in. Visit all colleges that you are interested during the school year so you can get a real feel for what the college is like; talk to current students and faculty members. Look at costs, how helpful the college is at assisting with job placement, financial aid and any other programs you might need or are interested in (tutoring, counseling, activities and so forth). Overall, you want to find a place where you can be successful in pursuing your college career and still have a fun social life. Without being prepared you might end up very unhappy which will only inhibit you from attaining your goals and enjoying college life.

diana

first of all find out our all your financial options before yoiu settle down you might think is good you think you can find a better option, second of all pick your class schedule that works for you dont get a class in the moring if you know you can't make it. laslty enjoy your college years !!!!
