New York University Top Questions

You shouldn't attend this school if you aren't friendly and outgoing. Everyone I know who has left NYU hasn't been able to make good friends or have a good time, and every one of those people just waited for friends to come to them. Doesn't happen. I knew no one when I got to NYU, and now I have hundreds of amazing friends from all over the world. It isn't the school, it's their being unfriendly people that keeps some students from not liking it.

Close-minded people.

I have always said that a person that believes that there is only one way to fit in a school would not do well here... We don't have an overarching sense of community; you have to make friends in several different circles. It's a different way to look at college, but it means that a lot of people can find a good fit here!

Someone who is looking for a small, conservative environment. NYU isn't going to give you your typical college experience. It certainly isn't what I dreamed up in my head. But, if you can get past that, recognize the beauty of the city and the resources it brings to the school, it can be the rigiht school for just about anyone.

People from small towns seem to have the hardest time adjusting. It is also difficult for conservative and many Christian students, but there are small networks and communities for every type of person if they seek them out. NYU is also a very hard school to finance, and financial aid usually comes in the form of loans. Almost every middle class student will have to work a decent amount of hours a week to support themselves while living in New York.

If your a person with low self esteem or aren't willing to develop friendships with different or unique people then NYU is not for you. At NYU, You can't stay in your dorm room and watch the city pass by. You must get involved or you will not enjoy the privileges of having a university in the middle of the city.

NYU is a VERY liberal school, so if you have a conservative mindset or have a hard time accepting people with alternative lifestyles, don't even consider it. There's no actual campus, jut a section of the city, so a person who's looking for the normal college experience will also be disappointed. The students here are also serious about their work, and can be competitive-if you prefer working in groups to studying alone, you might want to look at another college.
