Newbury College Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Paige

Depending on your level of prior education, it can be super easy, or somewhat challenging. Students are placed into classes they will do well in and work with their academic counselor to decide which classes to enroll into each semester. Most classes are straight forward and easy; there is a lot of reading usually and homework to do, but you have to try to fail your classes.

All of the professors know my name. My favorite class is World Civilization because we talk about history and the teacher makes the class fun and we all participate. My least favorite class if Food and Beverage Control because we always have a lot of work load to do and the class sometimes leads to different topics that has nothing to do with the subject itself. Students study but not that much. Class participation is very campus in the college. Students are competitive. MY major is hotel administration and I might get a minor in psychology. I usually do not spend time with professors outside of class unless I do not understand something from class. The schools academic requirements are good although it can be more strict. The education you get at Newbury College actually helps once you get a job in the related field.

The teachers are very helpful, and charismatic. Most of the subjects that they teach they work in too. Some teachers even give you their numbers for help over the weekends.

My academics are for the most part very challenging. I'm taking six courses this semester and most of them are 300-level classes. I spend a lot of my time studying, in class, or at work honestly. My psychology major requires a lot of work and I really like to stay on top of my work so I try to have assignments finished at least three nights before they are due but it is always worth it. I have never received anything less than a B+ at this institute and believe me that has not been an easy feat.

The classes are Small here. The average class size is 15 and we never have anymore than 30 students in one class. So every teacher you have will know your name and make a point to know your name. I am a Culinary Management major and it is very fun. Not only do i get to have classes in a kitchen but I also learn the background in all the management aspects. The academics at this school are very geared toward getting a job. We have a very high job after graduation rate which I found very important when deciding on where to go to school. I often meet with my professors if I am having trouble with their classes. They are very helpful and understanding. Also your adviser will always be someone within your majors department.

I am a Hotel and Restaurant Management major, with a concentration in Hotel Administration. What I love about it is that I am being taught lessons by professors who have years of experience in this field under their belt. Sure, we learn a good portion from the textbooks; but what the professors teach us about their own personal experiences certainly outweigh what the words in the book say. Also, internships are required for every major - but for Hotel and Culinary students, we are required to complete two internships. One in the back of the house, and one in the front of the house. Class participation is very common at this school. It's amazing to see how interested most people are in the lessons. There is almost never a dull moment!

I enjoy the academics. There are a lot of dedicated teachers who make the classes worth while. I am talking basically all psych classes and I enjoy the material and my teachers ways of teaching. All the professors know their students and they are more liked because they do not force students to verbally participate. Some people really do not like speaking in class and the teachers understand that.

Ashley

Profesors get to know students on a personal level. You get to be able to voice your opinion in class alot more than you would at a university for example. The profesors will know you by your name and not a number. They all care and want you to exceed in their class. My classes are not hard per-say, but the work load can be a bit frustrating at times just like any other school. My major is Hotel and Restaurant Management and I love it. It is so fun learning about the different departments in this major. There are so many job opportunities that I can go after which is awesome since the economy today does not allow people to go after many jobs. Newbury is definitely geared toward students getting jobs. Our internship program is very helpful with that since most students get offered a job at their internship.

Academics at Newbury should become a little more challenging in my opinion. Some of the intro classes are very easy. The class sizes here are very small and I've had a class with as little as 12 students in it. This is helpful because it lets you become close with your professor. I know all of my professor's names, and they know mine as well. The psychology department, which is my major has some really great professors in it. My academic advisor is also one of my psych teachers. They are all very nice and I can go to them with any problem I have.

Jonathan

Newbury is a career focused institution which means we are getting an education from people who have worked in the field that we are studying. I don't just learn from a textbook here at Newbury, I hear real life situations and apply it to what we are learning.

Stephanie

The academics at Newbury College are challenging yet the professors work very hard with every student so that they do the best they can. Class sizes are small so the professors know if their students face, name and if they were in class or not. Many times in class there will be group projects and interactive lectures and discussions.

Jason

The academics are good because the professors know you by name and they take the time to help you learn and grow as a student. The academics are good because the professors get to know you and they help you with jobs and internships that they see fit for you.

Jennifer

I am a Corporate Communication and Business Management Major. I'm also in Newbury's Honors Program. So my course load is pretty big. But definitely manageable! Most students take 5 classes a semester (I always take 6). The majority of our professors work in their field currently, so you can trust that you are learning all the latest that your field has to offer from the field itself. My favorite class has to be my honors class because it is geared toward discussion and thinking about the broader image of different concepts and topics. The courses at Newbury are engaging and challenging at times but are never overwhelming in my experience. We also require every major to complete an internship for a grade. So you get to learn the process of getting a job or internship step by step. In a lot of cases, those internships lead to jobs or other opportunities!

All the professors here, whether I have had them or not, know my name and know who I am. I am known as Kylie here and not as a number which is fantastic because its more of a personalized feel! My favorite class that I have had within my 3 years has been between my Human Resource Class and my Organizational Theory and Behavior class. This are my favorite classes because the professors take things from the outside world and their careers and use them as examples to help you understand the materials they are teaching. I am studying Hotel and Restaurant Administration with a Minor in Psychology. Within the Hotel program we learn about hotels, events, resorts and everything that has to do with the hospitality industry. In Psychology we learn everything from what it is exactly to diagnosing patients with what we are currently knowing. Outside of class I love to go and talk to my professors, a lot of my professors I can relate to and have conversations with about not only classes, but about what is going on in my personal life! At Newbury we are required to do an Internship before graduating, Hotel and Restaurant and Culinary are required to do two, my first internship is really helping me prepare for the real world. Having to do an Internship before graduating is great help before moving into the real world, and the professors and staff are excellent is helping and guiding you!

I believe that our academics are really strong here at Newbury which can be contributed to the experienced professors. Since our professors have worked within the field that they teach, you get the full experience, not just a teacher who has a PHD in the subject. Personally in the psychology department, the professors have worked in vast amounts of jobs like working in prisons or counseling. I think that this makes the classes and lessons stronger and more interesting because they put their own experiences into the lesson. Also their teachings can really help you with getting jobs and ready for the real world since we are a career orientated college.
