make sure you know as much as you can about all of the schools you are interested in. try your hardest to find things at each that interest you and dont let any pre-determined assumptions about a school stop you from looking there.

I would say the most important thing is to start looking early. Picking the right college for you takes a lot of time and thought. You have to make sure it has a major you are interested in, campus life you want, and most importantly you want to be able to visit the college a few times to make sure you feel at home when you walk around. I started looking at schools early my junior year. Since I took so long looking at all the different aspects of the schools I was interested in I feel I made the correct choice. Even though the school I am attending I originally applied to as a safe school, after I walked around the campus a few times I felt right at home. I fell in love with thier concentrated curriculum, and the club sports they offered. I am very happy that I took my time, and I feel that I made the correct choice for me.

No parent should push their child to attend a college or university that they do not want to attend. Every child should pick the college of their choice, they know best what fits them. I am currently a commuter student after living on campus my freshman and sophmore year. I do think it is importnt to try living on campus in order to gain a sense of independence and repsonsibility. Living on campus did not work out for me because I am not into the party scene, and since the commute from my home to Nichols is only 30 minutes, I was always at home. In college you have to be open-minded. You must be able to accept and try new things, if you don't you are not going to enjoy the experience.

talk to a variety of current students enrolled, such as walking around on campus and being told by the school who to talk to. most of the time the people the school hire to talk to possible enrollment are swayed to say good things about the school. go to different people and get real opinions.

Finding the right college takes time. Put time aside to go to college fairs to check out your options and then travel to your schools of interest to get the feel for what the campus might offer. Apply to at least 3 or 4 schools, and make sure that you have a back up school just in case you don't get accepted to your first choice. Make the most of your college experience by making as many friends as possible, joining multiple clubs, doing your homework/projects immediately after you receive the assignment and turn them in on time, keep communication open with your professors, and put aside at least a little bit of free time in order to combat the stress and not completely lose your mind :)

research every aspect of the schools.

I would suggest the student should feel comfortable at the school they are attending. Parents must also remember the student is the one attending the college not them. The student is the person that needs to like the campus surrounding and what they have to offer to get a better education.

Visit as many campuses as you can. Keep in mind several FIRST choices, one in the affordable range without much financial aid, and onethat possible isnt. Keep in mind classes sizes and location. If there's a club that you're passionate about but is not related to your major (for instance choir) choose a school tha has it rather than "coping" without. Have fun but don't give into peer pressure. Don't go home every weekend. Don't room with your best mate from high school. Remember when you first get there, no one knows you, you can be who you want to be, not who everyone in high school thought you were. If you're usually shy, try to open up. Keep your door open when moving in so people can stop by and say hi and go say hi to your neighbors. Even if they sounds stupid, go to activited ResLife puts on, it's a great way to meet people, have fun, and release your inner child. Most of all, find a good balance between school work and fun. One without the other will not be a good sign in the end.
