What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Charles

With my current knowledge of college life, if I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, the primary aspect that I would emphasis on would be the significance of financial aid. I would advise myself to persistently be in search of financial assistance and to apply to any scholarships that I meet the requirements of. I would assure myself that the more assistance I obtain, the smoother the transitioning into college will be, without the hassle of having to constantly badger the financial aid office. In addition, I would also advise myself to work on my procrastination habits, because in college procrastination leads to many long, sleepless, work filled nights.

Kayla

The advice I would give myself is to be prepared to make informed and intelligent decisions that can be life changing. I would tell myself that you will not have your Mom and Dad there to tell you what to do. College is not about partying and having fun and the freedom to do what you want to do. College is more about preparing for life and having the freedom to choose what you want to do in order to be independent, productive and successful in life. You have to map out your goals that you want to reach and carve out the strategies you intend to utilize to help you reach those goals. The life-long benefits received through your future academic experiences will properly prepare you to be an exceptional student majoring in the Business field and an exceptional employee leading in a transformational way.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself, I would tell myself to take high school more seriously. I thought the stuff that I learned in high school was pointless and I thought that I would never see it again. The truth is, everything that I was taught in high school resurfaced in college. I would have told myself to take math seriously and pay close attention to it. Math like Algebra and Trigonometry has never been my strong suit so I did not take it seriously. I barely paid attention during math in high school and because of that, I had to see a tutor so I could receive help to pass Algebra and Trigonometry in college. I would also tell myself to apply for as many scholarships as possible. I would tell myself to stop being lazy and just apply because there are a lot of scholarship opportunities out here. I was very lazy in high school which is why I am struggling to find money for school now.

Teniece

If I were to go back in time and speak to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to buckle down and take looking for scholarships and grant more seriously. I make sure I knew that just because I did well in high school doesn't mean I would just grasp things in college. I would make sure I understood that college is hard and it takes dedication to push through tough times

natalie

the advice i would give my self is to do what i like to do an naver give up because we never now how far we could go so we have to fight for our dreams we dont lose nothing just trying to do the things. Dont be afraid of anything :)

College offers you more than just education. The college lifestyle can be a positive or negative experience. In college you will be faced with a lot of temptations that you can either resist or give into . These temptations are also a test, in order to be sucessfull in life period you can not give into temptations that can jeapordize your career or even your life. On all college campus's their temptations that you will be faced with because you do not have any authority telling you what to do or what not to do. How you should look at college so that you stay all four years and have a successfull college education, you should look at it like youonly have one shot. This chance is only once and if you like the freedom and being able to experience the campus lifestyle then you need to also make sure you maintain the quality grades to stay at school and also to graduate on time. In college you learn alot of things from math to networking with peers, it only prepares you for the real world so look at this opportunity as one in a lifetime.

Michelle

I would tell myself that all my hard work that I done in my high school career will pay off in the end for me. So keep doing your best and you will see the pay off from it in the long run and don't discourage yourself you can do anything that you set your mind to. I would say that you can do anything that you dream of and to not be scared to go to a big university and get the experience that everyone talks about. I would also tell myself that i can do this and i will get through it no matter the cost.

Taylor

If i were able to go back in time I would tell myself one very important aspect. I would tell myself to work harder to pursue my dreams. In high school I felt as though everything would come to me, and I would not have to do anything. Now that I am in college I am far from reaching my goals. I wish I would have pused myself harder. I want to transfer to a four year college. I do not have the money to help pay the tuition. I want to go back in time and tell mayself, "Your dreams are not just going to fall right in front of your face. You need to apply for all the scholarships you can. Get a job now and save up! There is no time to waste!" That is what I would tell myself if I were able to go back in time.

Seeing how the world is now is not how it was imagined when graduating from high school. Computers, technology, communication devices, science, medicine, and so many other avenues have propelled us into a miniature global society. Transporting back in time to address myself about attending college would definitely impact my career. First, to sit down and first ask myself, what are the intended goals when finishing college, then what would you offer society that would increase awareness and improve, advance and alter the environment and people on a global scale? Taking those aspirations and adding what the future me knows, a potential strategic plan would be developed for a studious educational journey. It is important to realize that evolution is part of what we make it along with natural causes by the environment itself. College programs are designed to help us achieve, to help others, add to what has already been started, change what is not working, and make a difference. Nurturing qualities and skills, putting forth an employed effort, and seeking a set prime objective will make college a worthwhile effective adventure.

The advice I would give myself as a high school senior would be to apply for as many scholarships as possible, be mentally prepared to challenge your mind and stay focus and detemined for what your going to college for. Applying for many scholarships as a senior in high school will help with tuition fees, room and board and meal planning. So there's not such a financial burden on myself and the family. I would prepare myself mentally by hunderstanding that I might have to stay up all night sometimes to finish my school work. Also taking the initative to talk to your professors about how I can become a better student will help me mentally prepare for college. Staying focus and determined would be the most important advice I would give myself, because many students who attend college are focused on the wrong things such as partying, drinking and drugs. The reason for attending college is to obtain a degree of your intended major. So applying for scholarships, mentally preparing my mind, and staying focus and determined is advice I would give myself if I were a high school senior.

Trenice

College is completely different from high school. There is distractions everywhere you turn, freedom to do whatever you want and no one to chase after you. There will always be time to have fun and party but there will never be time for you to go back to adolescence. So stay focused do not procrastinate and get invovled with the campus. College is going to fly by, have fun but get your work done first. College is the best years of your life!

Allyson

Make sure you know what you want to study. If you're not sure, start out at a community college, taking only your general education classes until you figure it out. Take out the least amount of student loans as possible. It may mean having to work while in school and really budgeting but in the end you will be glad that you don't have a lot of student loan debt to pay back. Get involved in as many clubs and organizations as your schedule allows, that is the best way to get to know your peers. After your freshman year, even if you move off campus, move into student living apartments. These include all your utilities into your rent and really reasonable for a budget.

I would re-think my class choices that I had scheduled for my senior year. I would also try to participate in activities that would allow me to transition from High School to College . I would also be more aware of the differences in a High School campus verses a College campus. I would also utilize my High School Counselor and friends to get more out of my education so that I would be prepared for College.

Sunisha

I would prepare myself more into becoming better student by starting earlier and taking classes in high school that would of transfered over. Also the worse thing I did was try to come as a college freshmen and take up 18 credit hours as a freshmen i didn't really know the significance of credit hours and thought i could do it and found it very difficult. I would change that because i could of had an overall better gpa than i came upon. During the last year i had to really learn how to study because just reading and listen in class was really not enough. Overall college has transition me into a better student/person in oe year and i can't wait to see who i beome i the near future.

I'm so proud of you! The ending is about to be a new beginning. You are accepted to the school of your choice and I’m super excited for you but there are somethings I need to tell you. Of course you have hardly any help and being the first in the family to graduate from a university is a lot. Mom and dad haven’t done what you are now going through. So I’m here to help you. Apply for scholarships. Yes they are so intimidating and you are being pushed left and right but don’t give up. There are so many out there for college and high school students it’s ridiculous! So in other words KEEP SEARCHING.... Another piece of advice is to stop listening to all the “haters” out there. People are out there trying to find some way to make you miserable. Being out of state takes guts and a backbone of steal. It’s up to you to keep pushing to achieve your degree. You have the perfect foundation of marching band, Tau Beta Sigma (you will know soon), and flute choir. Stay focused, have fun, and be happy.

LaWanda

I wish that I had known more about scholarships available for new students during my freshman year . The full importance of upholding a 3.5 or higher my freshman year in college meant nothing because I didn’t apply it properly. Over the 3 years of attending this university and becoming more involved with different organizations I have learned about the ample amount of scholarships set aside for specifically for freshman every year and it makes me want to go back and start all over and apply the knowledge I’ve obtained about the many scholarships awarded to incoming freshman. Proper research within the university's scholarship fundings would have better prepared me to recieveing awards.

I will tell myself to prepare for college life before my senior year. During the summer before senior year starts, I will tell myself to start applying for scholarships and grants. Take the SAT and ACT early because if my scores are low, I will have another chance to take the test over. Also I will tell myself to prepare for those tests. When you have high scores it opens up more college doors for you. Submit all applications to the colleges of my choices early. I will advise myself to plan ahead not to waste time. Don't wait until the last 4 months of high school, to start making decisions about what are my plans after high school. Also I will tell myself to get a part-time job. Save some of that money, because it will come in handy when I go off to college. The best and most important advice I will give to myself is to have fun my senior year and enjoy being a teenager. When that hat goes up in the air, I will enter the beginning of my life as an adult.

Kasey

Looking back on college now, I would tell my high school senior self to take her time and ask for help when she needs it. She should allow others to help her when she needs it and not be afraid to ask for it. She should work with others in her classes and visit the professors for extra tutoring. She should join a few groups and tyr to make more friends as well. She should make the most of her college experiance rather than focus just on finishing.

Tila

You are only young once and although you feel that because of this you should have fun all the time, school is much easier when you are young. As you get older, life happens and you have more responsibilities. When you’re young, school should be your priority. There will be plenty of time to enjoy life when you are done with school and it will be so much easier financially to do so with a degree. I’m sure you’ve heard it and infinite amount of times, “Education is important”, but it is the basis of a successful and enjoyable life. An education will give you security for your future endeavors and the backbone for a flourishing career and life.

Marjorie

I would say to my self, take seriously your studies and pick a career that you like, not what your parents want you to study. The future is hard and if you don't have a good educacion you won't get a good job that pays good. And maybe you won't be starting college now and struggling to work, study and attend a home..That the bad decision you make you will regret..And studing is good ,to learn new things is great makes you feel useful and smarter..That is what I wolud say to my self.

Tajanae

I was always exempt from test in high school because my grades were always above average. In college there is no exemption and I missed the opportunity to learn how to study and apply myself for test. I find now as a college student that it is often difficult for me to test because I never knew. If I could go back to high school I would take all final exams even if I could be excused from them because those test taking skills will help you along the way in college.

Bianca

I know you may be a little nervous about going to college, being there by yourself without your parents around, but I honestly can tell you I know you will be just fine. You know you have you cousin there who is always there for you to talk to and his friends are very friendly and will treat you like a little sister. But you are really independent as well, you know how to cook, you know how to figure a way to get around and you are pretty good with your money. Just know that not everyone out here is your friend, and not every guy want a relationship. Do not only be book smart, but try and be street smart too, there are guys and girls in college who bring nothing but trouble, keep your friends to a minimal. Lastly, remember your priorities and that you are paying for this education so make sure you keep your grades up and keep them there.

Victoria

After coming to college I've come to realize that anything is possible. With all the classes offered throughout every college in the world, anyone can do anything as long as they put their mind to it and their heart in it. The real world become reality and hits a college student, especially me, harder than expected, but there is no doubt that it will be worth it in the end: the stress, sweat, and tears. College has been the start of my future, and it's shaping me into the person God intended me to be.

Kathryn

I am learning many new and interesting things about the healthcare industry. At first I was overwhelmed and felt intimidated, I wondered if I had what it takes to complete this course. As I studied hard, applied my knowlege to tests and recieved good grades I felt more comfortable, gradually I began to feel better about all of it. I look forward everyday to class! The education I am recieving is going to be invaluable to me in my future life. It will be the first time in nearly 4 decades of hard work that I will have an actual career, one that I can be proud of and one that will help other people as well. In these challenging times I think it's more important than ever before to not only be well educated but to have a wide variety of educational skills. We can loose a lot in way of worldly goods but no one can ever take away our knowlege, it's my most valuable possession and one I will continue to persue in the years to come.

I have gotten alot out of my college experience so far. Being away from my mother and the rest of my family has showed me how much I care about them. Also being at college has been a great motivation for me because I now know how to manage my time very well. In high school I was the type of person that procrastinated on doing my homework and things of that nature. I have become more aware of how to get things done for myself. College is teaching me valuble life lessons for when I will be in the real world on my own.

a;tyree

because it will help you in the long run.

Alexandra

Furthering my education is very important and it is a decision that I stand by strongly. To have the opportunity to further my education is more than a privilege but it is a blessing that I thank God for daily. I have learned a great deal from my college experience. As I enter these college years, I have come to realize that I am indeed entering the real world. There is no one to hold my hand or force me to attend class and do homework. The motivation comes from within. I have grasped not just intellectual knowledge from my college experience but I have learned other aspects to equip me in life. I have learned how to manage my time wisely, being that I work full time and attend school full time, the importance of attendance and grades, and staying on top of my work and studies. College is an investment that I plan to reap the benefits from through my hard work and steadfastness. My plan is to continue to work hard and my goal is to only get better. This scholarship would help me tremendously. Thank you for the opportunity.

Dayquinton

I have gained educational experience and personal goals have been meet through my attendance of college. if i would not have attended college i would not have been able to properly care for my child as well as proceed with my edication.

Rafiya

faith, courage, self-confidence, and everything anyone can imagine. This school is perfect for anyone.

Ashley

I have gotten many things out of my college expierence. First and foremost I have learned to balance work and school and have been able to maintatin a 3.53 GPA. I have learned time management. Learning how to make the most of my time was difficult at first but has been very beneficial. I know how to handle my home life with school work and my three part times jobs. I have gained a lot of expierence to help me in my career as a nurse. I have also gained many friends. When you are in a specific career program you start to see the same people, and it makes it nice to have friends in the same program that can always give you encouragment or help with any questions you may have.

My two years in college have been great. Ive definatly been around the block. my freshman year was spent a Johnson C. Smith where i attended for free off an acdemic and football scholarship. I started on the football team my whole freshman season. My sophmore year i transfered to North carolina A&T state university. The greatest expirence of it all is the networking. You meet new people from all around, and we all kno the more people kno the more you learn about in life. College is the final chapter in your life before you go out in to the so called real world. Its a place that will make you more independent, responcible, and also help you begin to get a structure on your life if you have not already done so.

My first year of college has taught me numerous amounts of things. Transitioning from high school to college was a challenge. They try to teach you the differences between high school and college, but actually transitioning is up to you. You have to be eager to learn. Professors love students who come to them when they don’t understand a certain concept or have questions concerning their class. Communicating with you professor outside of class can make a big difference in how well you succeed in the course. Managing your time is very important. You can develop better time management skills when you get the hang of how things work. When something is due to your professor, turn it in on time; no excuses. It is valuable to attend college because you will not only learn a lot through the courses but learn a lot about yourself. Deciding to attend college has been one of the best choices I have made in my life. I have gotten the chance to meet new people, live a different lifestyle (being on my own), and learn a lot of new things about myself.

Shannon

At first I was very reluctant to attend a community college before a 4-year college, but once I got there it has been a great experience. I have enjoyed many wonderful teachers who come from all different backgrounds, some who work in the industry and some who teach at local public/private colleges as well. Some of my teachers are very personable and truly care about their students. My Chemistry teacher last year had a special opportunity of 40 extra points for his students at the beginning of the semester. He wanted us to go have an interview with him so he could get to know us better and know how best to help us in our learning experience. It was great to get that one-on-one feedback with him. Since I was headed toward nursing he said he expected to see me helping others in lab after I had finished my own work. What he did was something I have never heard a teacher do before. He has really made my learning experience at Diablo Valley College memorable in a good way.

Kayla

What I have gotten from attending college is that my determination to succeed in my field of study has increased. It has been valuable for me to attend because I now know what short-term and long-term goals that I want to achieve.

shaunna

So far i have learned so many new and exciting things in my college experience. I have learned different medical terminology terms, how to store and do upkeep on patient records, the AHIMA laws and other laws for healthcare facilities. I have honestly learned so much that it is hard to name every thing. Going to college is valuable for me to attend because no one in my family ever went to college and since both of my parents died, i think they would have wanted me to go to college. I also want to be able to provide a better life for my daughter than i had growing up and to set a good example for her.

Molly

I decided to take a year off from college due to the fact that I wanted to work more and raise money so i can be capable of paying for college myself, without the thought of loans. Ever since i was in 6th grade i basically have been on my own and i want to continue doing that by paying for college without the help from my parents. I recently went to WSU and the atmosphere was incredible. The whole town was made up of my generation, it just felt more carefree. Even with the campus having more that twenty thousand students it still felt like i fit right in to this huge community. I feel like it will be valuable to attend since the campus has a wonderful nursing program which my dream is to become an RN. Also the campus is very well built and it truely does show that the students respect that. All around the campus is gorgeous and not to mention WSU is rated very highly in the state of Washington. I already applied for the spring and hope to pursue my career in nursing.

Anson

Because going to college makes me learn new things and have new experiences, meeting new interesting people and start forming myself as a person.

Krystal

Starting in a community college was very good for me. Since the campus is smaller than most, my advisors and teachers were very helpful and understanding. They were available whenever I needed them. The classroom size is nice too. Instead of having a lecture hall with two hundred plus students, there is only thirty. It makes homework easier. Meeting people is a piece of cake. I like knowing that if I need help I can get it right then and there. My college experience has been great so far. Jefferson college is an affordable way to get a great education.

Boubacar

My college experience make me see the world clearly. It makes me understand better how things work. It makes me more competitive and more efficient professionally. It also make me be more assertive and a good decisions maker.

Cathy

POWER!!! This is the word that describes my 4 years at A&T. "I am Powerful." Year after year I have watched myself morph into an individual that I never saw myself becoming. My college experience is a positive one for me, being a single mother, having to face many obstacles. When I started I was only looking to recieve a degree for the purpose of better job opportunity. My professors and the courses I have become involved with, changed that. I no longer want "only" a job or career...I want to make a difference in my field of study. I want to be involved in psychological research that may help redefine a number of health issues many individuals currently face and provide better treatment plans and possible prevention tracks. Being a part of a University that requires community service has shown me the importance of community. In todays society we seem to be losing focus on what is important, which is family and people. Through my college experience I now promote the value in people. College has taken my single minimum goals and turned them into a vision that I am eager to embark upon.

Priana

Through my college experience I have learned to become patient, understanding, more open-minded, and independent. Being that I had to relocate for school, attending college has been valuable because I have gained a greater appreciation for my parents and family, and I have also gained a better understanding of what it means to be an adult. If it were not for me attending NC A&T State University, I would not know what Aggie Pride was nor would I appreciate the life that HBCUs have to offer. Attending an HBCU has been valuable because it has instilled in me even greater pride to be a college student.

Jeremy

So far I have gained the experience of learning what college is all about. That this is not like high school and there are certain things that you cannot handle the same way as you may be use to such as last-minute studying, procrastination on homework or doing projects at the last minute. I have gained valuable knowledge that I feel will help me to obtain employment with companies in the years to come and that I will be able to pass on to my younger brother and children when they begin their college careers. I hope and plan that I will be able to give back to my school, community, and my family, the ones who helped me the most with this knowledge and experience that I have recieved from North Carolina A&T State University.

Winnie

My college experience has definitely had its ups and downs. I spent three years on the varsity tennis team, but will still graduate in four years (thanks goodness for AP classes!). I believe that every college student should have the opportunity to experience the depth of school spirit demonstrated at A&T. Aggie Pride is truly nationwide, and I realized how fortunate I am to attend this university when I was in Hawaii a few years ago; we had lunch in a soul food restaurant that turned out to be Aggie owned. I joined a sorority, my grades remainded high despite the demanding athletic schedule, and I participate in a variety of extracurricular and volunteer activities. I believe that North Carolina A&T has made me a better person. I can definitely say that I made the right decision, and I would definitely make it again. I know that I will come back every year for "The Greatest Homecoming on Earth," and I am thankful for the opportunity to attend A&T. AGGIE PRIDE!

Zakeya

I have learned the value of an education and my own mental capacity. My college experience is not one that is glorious or that I would share with the world because I too made bad decisions, however I learned that the best lesson is one where I made a decision standing on my own two feet without the permission of anyone and fell on my own and learned to survive without somone tending to my wounds. Real growth, and that is something I do not reget!

Lauren

After attending college for two years, I have learned that people think in many different and interesting ways. From a change of your high school friends and being around those who you grow up with, you quickly learn how to be accepting of other views that the other students around you have. Not only are you educated about your major but also most importantly, you learn how to interact with others. Social interaction with others I believe will take your career further than just your education will get you. Despite my difficulties that I have had at my University, I truly value what I have learned by attending, such as how to interact with other in an effective way so that all can understand, and most of all I have learned to work with others that may not work as I do.

Christy

College has been one of the most valuable life learning experiences for me. It has given me the opportunity to become an independent person helping me strive to reach my goal of becoming an elementary education teacher. Through academics, I have filled my experiences in engaging classrooms, hands on clinicals, and with collaborative professors and classmates. Through student life, I have filled my experiences with volunteering on campus, having a campus job, participating in a sorority, and having wonderful times with friends at campus sports events and fundraisers. I now know who I am today through these college experiences to succeed in life. I can take all of these valuable experiences to apply myself in the real world, and become an engaging, motivative, and caring elementary education teacher. Through my college career, I have earned my degree, learned how to work well with others, given back to the community, and made life-long friendships that I will cherish forever. My college experience is extremely valuable to me and it will only affect me positively for the rest of my life.

Jessica

So far my experience has been a learning one. You must apply yourself to everything you do. They show you that you can make a difference if you just believe in yourself

Jaurice

What I have gotten out of school is that working hard is important, but friendship is apart of the foundation of success. When you go to college, they teach you how to think and not what to think. Knowing how to pick good friends who will give you good advice when needed and vice versa is important. That?s something no book or professor can prepare you for. During the tough times, the character of the people near you is revealed and the people who stay in the darkest times are you?re real friends. The reason having friends is important is because being in college is a new environment and it gives you a chance to meet new people. This inspires you to do better because you have people cheering for you at school and at home.

Jamond

What I've gotten out of college is the sense of the real world. College serves as the perfect transition into the real world. For the first time in my life I was on my own, expect for finicial purposes. I had to learn how to be independent and make life choices for myself. Also, i had to condition myself because there was no one making sure i went to class, studied, and completed homework. In highschool, everything was monitored, If I slacked there was always someone to put me back in place, however in college it's solely up to me to make sure I make the most responisible choices. College marks the beginning of the rest of my life, so it's important to work hard now in order to be able to make the best life possible.

Alana

I have become a new and better person because college help me find out who i truly am. Going to A&T where the aggie pride is live and strong .Being a student on this campus was a life changing experience because it made me feel proud to go to an HBCU and become a strong black woman with great role models. They made the path and now i have to follow it and do the same for the new aggies to come . Everyone has to have a stroong foundation and beging a aggie you will have the foundation you need for the rest of your life. Aggie born, Aggie bred , when i die i will be aggie dead. This a school filled of love and students who are leading the legeacy .
