North Carolina State University at Raleigh Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Laura

There are all types of groups related to race, religion, etc. Campus crusade practically bombarded everyone to join them at the beginning of the year, this week we're having a Pan-Afrikan assembly, there are so many groups that are geared towards that kind of stuff. The only kind of student that would feel out of place at NCSU would be a UNC fan. Students wear everything to class, I've heard that the year before I came here there was a boy who wore underwear and a bowtie to class. I try to dress nicely so I wear a dress and heels on my nicer days and nice jeans and a shirt on my casual days. There are girls who I am friends with who I have never seen in anything other than oversized gym shorts and t-shirts. Guys wear anything from overalls to dress pants, there is no common style of dress. There is plenty of interaction between differents students. There is no real division among the lines of race or religion or anything else like that. Everyone is kind of friends with everyone. Most NCSU students are from North Carolina, with some from Virginia. There are a lot from Raleigh and Charlotte. I would say that the financial backgrounds are from average to above average, but there are always people who are less fortunate than others as well, and it seems that people are always willing to help them out if they can. Students are very much politically aware, and I would say that they are generally conservative, but that could very well be inaccurate simply because almost every single one of my friends is conservative so that is all I am exposed to.

Catherine

I haven't really been involved with many racial experiences. There is a broad racial group found at NC State so I can't single out a type of student that might feel out of place at NCSU. To class, I wear jeans and a t-shirt. I always feel comfortable because I know I am not being judged.

Hannah

The student body at NCSU is very diverse. Because many different types of people attend State i don't think that anyone would ever feel out of place. I would probably say that the majority of NCSU students are from North Carolina and surrounding states such as Virginia, South Carolina etc. It would be hard for me to say about the political side of State students, i myself lean towards the right, but i would guess that the majority or ether somewhere in the middle or lean to the left.

Paige

A lot of people I have met here come from smaller towns or less diverse areas. I am glad that NC State provides a diverse campus because although my high school and home town was extremely diverse, I think others need to be exposed to diversity in college especially if they were not at home. Diversity is a good thing to have on a college campus because it brings different perspectives to the table.

sarah

Very diverse, but most students are from within North Carolina. There's always the occasional student from out of state, and we're always like "so, why did you choose State?" . It probably gets annoying to them. There are a lot of middle easterners in the engineering department, but that program isss internationally known. I wouldn't say there is a predominant political influence here. All different types of students interact.

Claire

the student body is very diverse and i don't see any problem with that

Alison

NCSU is a conservative school.

Hannah

the student body is very diverse

Cody

I feel NCSU tries particularly hard to include diversity within the school. I have friends and classmates of almost all races, and I like learning about their backgrounds and their differences from mine. Most students wear jeans and a t-shirt to class. Or at least, that's what I wear.

Katie

No comment really. Most people at NCSU seem pretty down to earth, thats why I choose NCSU over Chapel Hill. The student body has a wide range of people.

Katie

i think we have a diverse student body

Maureen

Is full of wolfpack pride.

Shelby

Very diverse.

Kelsey

the only group i am in on campus is a sorority. i would like to get more involved though. most students wear jeans and a t-shirt to class. everyone interacts and it is a very accepting school. a lot of ncsu students are from raleigh and other cities in north carolina.

erin

I think different types of students interact with one another in the classroom. However, in most cases people tend to stick to their friends which can be seen anywhere and ti is very common. Students wear jeans to class, the dress is very casul. Most NCSU students are from North Carolina

Andy

All of the students here are diverse, even in the same social circle.

Sarah

awesome, republicansss

alison

NCSU students are often more welcoming than students of other schools. Most students dress very comfortably for class. Most state students are from noth carolina... many from raleigh.

Carrie

Most students dress comfortably to class and rarely dress up. Most students are from North Carolina and rarely do I meet people outside of the state.

Emily

There's a new LGBT center on campus, which I think is awesome. I don't think anyone would feel out of place here because there's agriculture, english, engineering, you name it. There are Greeks, musicians, Campus Crusade, service organizations. most students are from North Carolina, but as a Virginian, I absolutely love it.

Emily

I feel like out of all of the "larger" instutions in NC, NCSU is the most conserative one. Unfortunately the whacks and loonies are the ones that always seem to present their ideas, via protests or obnoxious signs.

Nico

The student body may be large, but I can save them all.

Erika

My experiences have all been good. No student would feel left out here. Most students wear sweat suits or jeans and a sweat shirt to class. Yes diff. types of students interact. I don't understand the 4 table thing and don't know where most the students are from...NC I guess. Rich people do attend here but I don't think their most prevalent, I would have to say middle-class. Students are politically aware, but not as much as they could be. No students dont talk about how much they will earn one day.

Shelley

1. 2. those that wish they were at carolina 3. wide range 4. yes 5. 6. North Carolina 7. middle class 8. 9. 10.

Megs

I feel sometimes people on campus or the general body can be too conservative and not open minded to new ideas and groups. But i think it is really working to change that and I love that about the school. When we see a problem we try to educated people and teach them to be more respectful of people.

Caroline

Every once and a while you'll run into groups that you may not agree with, but they're just exercising their right to free speech. I don't mind all the groups on campus, as long as they don't get in my way when I'm trying to go to class. I don't feel left out, because there is a group for everyone on this campus. Students wear what they want to to class. Some where PJ's or sweat pants, some get all dressed up, its really your perogative. Everyone pretty much gets along really well, if you have a problem with someone, its really easy to just avoid them. Its a large campus. If there are only four tables in the dining hall, and I had to describe them, I'd say "there are four tables filled with students in the dining hall". People don't tend to segregate themselves. We're not in high school anymore. People at NCSU are from everywhere...really. I wouldn't say that financial backgrounds are prevelent unless that person lets you know. I'd have to say the campus as a whole is pretty conservative. Then again we are in the south.

Whitney

My experiences with various minority communities on campus are very welcoming--for example, at the religious organizations on campus, you are welcome to join them in their activities, regardless of your faith. I can honestly say that I cannot think of a single type of student that would feel out of place here. As far as what students wear to class, most of us dress down--the typical blue jeans, t-shirt, etc. Students interact on a regular basis with each other, all from various groups. Most NCSU students are from in-state, however, a significant portion of the student population is either out-of-state or international. The 4 tables of students in the dining hall are easily student government people, major organization leaders, dorm buddies, and the average joe students. The financial background most prevalent here is lower-middle to middle class. A large percentage of students are at the least politically aware, with a smaller population being active. Most are center. Most students mention how much they will earn one day every once in awhile for purposes of self-motivation; however, this talk isn't a daily thing.

Erin

There is a wide range of individuals, which makes states campus what it is. Probably LGBT. Jeans and shirts. On occassions. I have never eaten at the dining hall. Most are from Charlotte. Middle to upper class. Some are, most aren't. I think it's a mix of left and right. Yes, making the most money is always a topic.

Julie

There is a lot of diversity around campus in all of these areas. I don't think anyone would really feel out of place at NCSU, there is a little bit of everything here. T-shirt and jeans, casual things. Yes all the time. Most students are from NC. I would say middle class students are most prevalent. A lot are politically aware and active, but I'm sure there are plenty of those who are apathetic to the whole political thing. No one really talks about how much they will earn, but they talk about how they want a good job that will support them.

Ashley

I do not like a lot of those types of groups because they are very close minded. I do not think anybody would feel out of place at nc state, we are very diverse. A lot of people wear comfty clothes to class. Everybody interacts with everybody! A lot of student that eat in the dining hall just eat with a few friends or their roommate. NCSU students are from everywhere around the country mostly south east though. Financial backgrounds are diverse as well. Most students are politically aware and active.

Nick

The student body is very diverse and can not be described as a whole. Most of the students here are from North Carolina.

Amanda

The LGBT center here at NCSU did not go over very well with most of the students.

Alex

I live in a private dorm which doesnt allow me to eat at the dining hall. NCSU students come from all over. I have met alot of people from Raleigh and Charlotte however, just because i think they are large towns. I think there are lots of students who are politically active. I actually just registered to vote and have been watching the new reports on this election.

Court

Students are somewhat politically aware and active. I think NCSU students are predominantly right but the teachers are predominantly left. Students don't generally talk about how much they will earn one day. I think just about any student could feel in place at NCSU. I see a lot of diversity around campus.

Jamie

The only problem I have with religion on campus in the men in the brickyard. While I know they are not affiliated with NCSU, I feel that they try to divide our campus. Religion is important to many students here, but many do not agree with what these men are saying. I do not think that any student would feel out of place at NCSU. We have organizations for any ethnicity or gender. NCSU really makes an effort to make everyone feel comfortable.

Kristen

NCSU is a very diverse campus and I think for the most part everybody gets along. Students wear whatever they want to class, cute little sundresses to comfortable sweats or pajamas. Different types of students do interact because of the constant contact that come in. Most NCSU students are from North Carolina and rural areas. There are some very politically aware students but not as much as at other schools.

Sarah

I have no problem with the different support groups around campus. Some people feel they're unnecessary, but I think it's a great idea. The campus is big enough and there are so many different people that virtually no one would feel out of place. It might take some time to find the right group, but I'm sure it's there. Most students are from parts of NC, but there are a good number that are from out of state.

Caro

i think we are very diverse. we have all kinds of clubs, so anyone can fit in and find some people like them. there are more conservative people here due to the fact theres lots of agriculture people. different types of students interact with ease.

Gary

None

Tyler

The official dress code seems to be T-shirts all around. We're a pretty casual bunch of people, and those people who are not casual are doing their best to seem so.

Harper

There are a lot of Asians on campus, some people I know call Avent Ferry Road, Asian Ferry. most students wear jeans and a t-shirt to class. Some business students dress up for classes and some textile students do as well, but for the most part it is a very casual look, almost too casual. For the most part, each race hangs out with its own race, we are fairly divided. This could possibly relate to the fact that it is a southern school with some southern ideals still. Four tables; blacks, whites, engineer boys, mix of boys and girls. Most students are from North Carolina. Most are from middle-lower class financially. A lot of students talk about what they'll earn one day. They are hoping that the higher education they are receiving now will benefit them in the future, and most likely it will.

Amber

NC State offers a very diverse student body who is actively concerned with promoting diversity awareness and recognition. As a southern university, NC State's campus has a stigma of being very conservative, however I believe this mindset is rapidly changing to a much more diverse political identity. There have been some issues of discrimination and "hate crime" activity toward certain groups on campus, but they have been rapidly denounced and handled by both student leaders and administration. NC State recently established a GLBT Center on campus to offer support to the GLBT community and their allies as well as promote awareness around campus. Financially, NC State has many more middle- to lower-class students than our rivals in Chapel Hill. In response, the financial aid office has developed a good level of assistance for students facing financial difficulty, especially through their PackPromise program which offers students whose families are at or below 150{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the poverty level a full covered education. I believe every type of student from any background would feel comfortable and be able to find their "place" here at NC State. The number of student organizations on campus offers an outlet for people of an enormous range of interests and lifestyles. For the most part, people are open and accepting and interact freely with one another regardless of race, socio-economic status, background, etc.

Sarah

I have found NCSU to be a very open and safe place when it comes to racial and religious groups. Being an Africana studies minor, I have always felt comfortable in the classroom discussing the not always pretty details about sensitive racial social issues. I do not feel that any kind of student would feel out of place at NCSU because there are many diverse clubs and organizations for all nationalities, religions, hobbies, etc. on campus. This diverse student population also has no problem interacting with each other, I have found here. Most students, though, are from North Carolina and usually a middle class background. I believe that many students here, as at many universities, are politically aware and there are active clubs fro each political party. However, I would say that the majority of the students at NCSU are right-winged or center. While I have heard students talk about how much money they'll make one day, it is not an often occurrence.
