North Carolina State University at Raleigh Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Katie

Greek life is very small here and school pride should be raised

Maureen

The best thing about NCSU is the Greek Life. I feel that it is a little hidden secret about NCSU but once you get involved it is one of the best things you will ever do!

Shelby

NCSU is by far the best school in the country. There are many students here but you would never know it. Everyone is extremely friendly and everyone has a lot of school spirit. We all support our athletics even if they sometimes do not have the best seasons. I love going to the football and basketball games. Our campus is not the most beautiful but I love it and there is no other place I would rather be.

Kelsey

the best thing about ncsu is that we have a lot of school spirit. our school is large but I like being at a big place. the only complaints i have about the school is our safety. we have had a lot of robberies and assaults on campus that should be reported and looked into.

erin

The best thing about NC state is the diversity. I came from a really small all girls high school in hopes of being immersed in a variety of people and surroundings. This was the case I came knowing no one and found some wonderful people that I intend to keep for the rest of my life.

Andy

I would change the fact that the Raleigh community does not seem as involved with the school as other campuses. We lack support from our city!

Sarah

school spirit!

alison

NCSU is different that surrounding schools such as UNC-chapel hill and duke, because in general people at state are more down to earth. People at other schools can seem to have unattractive complexes about themselves and their home school.

Carrie

Our school is very large and I love it. I love seeing new people every day. We have a good amount of school pride but not as much as UNC Chapel Hill or Duke

Emily

It's awesome that NCSU is its own community within such a large city. It's nice to get out into Raleigh for shopping, bars out with friends and restaurants so you feel like you're in the "real world" and not just on a college campus. There's ALWAYS something going on, whether it's on campus, in the Raleigh-Durham area or with various organizations.

Emily

NCSU being the largest school in the state, many make remarks to me of it being to large. In my opinion the size is irrelevant. A campus is what you make of it, therefore no matter the size of a campus you can always develop the feel of a small close knit community.

Nico

NC State is a great place if you want to be an engineer. They work you to the bone, but if you make it you can graduate and start your work immediately.

Erika

Best thing about NCSU is there is a lot of school pride. One thing I would change is how far the buildings are for class. The school in my eyes is too large. When I tell ppl I go to NCSU they are happy for me. I spend most of my time on campus in my room. NCSU administration is excellent. The biggest recent controversy on campus has been all the robberies. Yes there is a lot of school pride. All the bricks were unusual to me at first but now they are fine. One experience I will always remember is being a cheerleader here @ State. Most frequent student complaints are the smoking rules are not being enforced at all, people are still to close to buildings.

Shelley

Best Thing: Diversity Change: the layout of NCSU campus to feel more like a community Reactions: depends who I am speaking to, usually positive responses Time spent most: College of Textiles NCSU Administration: friendly and somewhat helpful Controversy: School Pride: somewhat, however there could definitely be more Unusual: It has a ridiculously large and spread out campus making it impossible to have the communal feeling found at other universities Experience: Student Complaints: campus

Our school is one of the largest in North Carolina but when you get to campus it does not feel that big. We have a pretty compact campus and once you get into your college, you tend to see a lot of the same faces and it does not make you feel overwhellemed by the size. I love that about State. Raleigh is a excllent college city-- downtown is just a short ride down the road and if you dont drive the bus system is pretty awesome. Downtown Raleigh has a lot of bars, clubs, resturants, art gallaries, musuems and more. I think its a great place to be in colleg because it is also surround by many other universities and it has alot to offer.

Caroline

The best thing about NCSU...is definately the people you meet. You can't be afraid to just talk to people, not everyone will bite. I would change...how the administration treats the students. They aren't horrible to us, but they aren't wonderful to us either. At times I think NCSU is too large, sometimes I feel like a number, but honestly, I'd hate being at a small school where EVERYONE is all up in your business. People treat me the same way they treat everyone else that goes to college. They say, "ooo thats nice" and move on. The time I spend on campus..I'm either in class, at work, or something is going on with the Fraternity. I try not to stay on campus a lot, I'd rather be at home where I'm more comfortable. The administration...sometimes it really feels like I attend NC State Univeristy Incorporated. Its always about money and how much I don't have to give to the school. I feel like I'm always paying more money than I was before. Books are VERY expensive, and it really doesn't look like the administration cares. The biggest controversy..I guess would have to be the textbook prices. They're really ridiculous. I would say there is a lot of school pride...when we're winning.

The best thing about NCSU is that no matter which "group" you belong to, or if you even have one at all, you have people there just like you. There is somewhere for everyone to fit in. The campus size is just right. When I tell people I go to NCSU, people look very impressed. When on campus, I spend most of my time either in the main library, in my dorm room, or in one of the student centers. However, regardless of how many colleges are in Raleigh, NC, it is certainly not a college town in many respects. However, it is still very friendly to college students. As far as NCSU's administration goes, they are a major "pain" to students--they do not appreciate students, and it seems to many students that they do everything in their power to make students' lives more difficult. The biggest recent controversy on campus revolved around the establishment of the NCSU LGBT Center (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Center). There is a great deal of school pride here, especially in the realm of sports. NCSU is unusual in how many different types of students there are here--in regards to culture, religion, academics, etc. There is something at this university for everyone. One experience I will always remember will be the first homecoming parade I attended--I was chased by a man in a chicken costume! The most frequent of student complaints lies within the judicial system, for the most part. The administration looks for anything it can to get students in trouble.

Erin

The best thing is my sisters. The one thing I'd change is all the bricks on campus. I think the size of the school is pretty good. People don't really react when i say I go to NCSU. Greek Life office or in classes. Somewhere in between, there is college life, but there's so much more too. Doesn't do the best with incliment weather. The LGBT center. Most of the time. Nothing unusual. That homecoming competitions are rigged. Too many bricks, bus system suck.

Erika

The best thing about NC State is that it is right in the heart of Raleigh. The location of State is so close to the research triangle park, and all the professionals that work there.

Erin

-The best thing is when we have good weather its perfect!! - - its perfect size for me not to big and not to small -they as how far away the beach is and they're jealous b/c they're stuck up in the cold in PA -i spend most of my time in my dorm - -some of them have no idea what they're talking about a couple of the classes ive been taking i have to teach myself the material becuase my teachers dont help. -not much school pride -

Harper

i think one of the best things about ncsu is that it is located in raleigh. raleigh is such a diverse city and that is one of the great things about ncsu because it is located here you are exposed to many different elements of life that you wouldn't find if you went to a smaller school or a school that is located in the middle of no where. i think that ncsu is just the right size. yes it is a large university. you do have the classes in which you have 200 people in one lecture but those are just your general ed classes. i've had teachers make the time to try to get to know the names of students in those classes by taking pictures to put the names with faces. people can't say that at ncsu you are just another number because when you finally get down to your core classes in your major you aren't thrown into a large class. i know that in my major there are only 3 classes that have large lectures and then the rest of the classes in my major are smaller and it is more "intimate" (for the lack of a better word). i spend the majority of my time on campus on east campus over in winston, thompkins and caldwell. that is where all of my classes have been for the past two years since i am a humanities and social science major. i think that there is a decent amount of school pride but it is something that isn't as prevalent as many would think. the attendance at campus events, such as the pack howl and the homecoming parade isn't as large as it should be, but when it comes to football games the school is behind there team when the school is doing well. i was always taught by my father not to be a fairweather fan so i always stand behind our team no matter the season, if it be 3-9 or if they are 10-2.

Julie

The football stadium. Just right. It is a nationally recognized school and people usually respect that I go there. In my dorm. There is a lot of school pride, we may not be that good at a lot of sports, but still a lot of pride. Nothing unusual really. My first day of classes. I'm not sure what the most frequent student complaints are.

Quinn

The best thing about NCSU is its students- it is a diverse group of students that are well rounded and supportive of the school and each other. There is definetly no lack in school pride here. The school itself is perfect size and I wouldn't change anything about it. I love it just the way it is. Raleigh is definetly a college town. It is fun, exciting, and full of opportunities for students.

Ashley

The best thing about NCSU is the great college of Management I am enrolled in. One thing I would change would be repair the dorms, the elevators are always broken. NCSU is just the right size, not too big nor too small. When I tell people I go to NCSU people react normally like any other person would when you tell them where you attend school. I spend most of my time in the dorm because i live on campus currently. This is a college town but it is not as big and eventful as some other colleges. NCSU's administration tries to be involved as much as possible with campus life and students. The biggest recent controversy on campus was the death of UNC student body government Eve Carson. There is a lot of school pride but it is not anywhere near what it could be if all the students participated in school events. The only thing unusual about NCSU is all the crime that has been going on recently. One experience i will always remember is rooming with someone i had never met until move-in day. Most students complain about walking everywhere and fire drills all throughout the night/morning.

Nick

NCSU is in Raleigh NC close to UNC and Wake Forest so it is very much a college town. The school is very large and I like it that way. When I tell someone that I go to NC State people in the state usually say they went there to because that is where most of the people from North Carolina go. People from out of state do not know too much about it but they usually realize that it is a good school. There is a lot of school pride here, and the fans are very good but sometimes very harsh. The only student complaints I usually hear are about sports but our athletics program is decent now but definitely on the rise, as most of the students know.

Amanda

The best thing about NCSU is the down home feel. I thought that moving from a small town to a large city would be really hard, but it's not. NCSU still has the southern hospitality and polite people in the big city. It's the best of both world - lots of shopping and really nice people. One of the most frequent student complaints is that we are always compared to UNC and that we are not as good as a school as them. In fact, our engineering school is one of our biggest colleges and our textile school is ranked, as well. People also forget about our vet school being one of the top in the nation.

Alex

The best thing about NCSU is the campus activity. Theres always something going on. One thing I'd change is that theres always construction on campus. Like i said theres something always going on including updates and remodeling. I like new buildings but at the same time construction areas can be a hassel. I am from a very small town so i think NC States size is just right. My hometown is half the size of NC States population. When I am not in my dorm I am usually in central campus. Most of my classes are in the sciences labs so i spend alot of time there. There is alot of school pride. Although I think there could be more school spirit.

Court

If I could change one thing it would be Hillsborough st. It is so dated and ugly.

Jamie

The opportunities on campus. There was always an event going on in the brickyard, and a lot of students, from different organizations would work together for a cause. I think that NC State is a good size. I wanted to go to a larger school, but not one that was overwhelming. Many people, when I tell them I go to NCSU, talk about what a good school it is. I spend most of my time around the Court of Carolinas because many of my classes are over there. I think that NCSU has a diverse, yet qualified, array of teachers. However, I feel that many of our advisors do not have time for us, and we need as much guidance as we can get. One experience I will remember about NCSU is Service Raleigh. When I went to Reynolds, I was amazed to see how many sorority/fraternity and other organizations were there to help clean-up Raleigh.

Kristen

The best thing about NCSU is the diversity of the students. If I could change one thing it would be to use different building materials other than bricks. I like the size of my school, you don't know everybody but you recognize people when walking across campus and see friends most of the time. When I tell people I go to NCSU they usually comment on how bad the basketball or football team is. I spend most of my time on campus in the classroom buildings in the brickyard. Raleigh is somewhat of a college town but it is more of a "big" city seeing as we have concerts, hockey games, and the fact that we're the capital. I never see NCSU's administration except at large events. I feel that they are highly overpaid for the work that they do. There are always small controversies on campus, from preacher Gary to student body elections. There is a lot of school pride but it could be improved, possibly if the teams were better. The one thing I'll always remember is rushing the court my sophomore year after we beat Carolina in basketball. The most student complaints come about the number of bricks, construction, the Wolfline bus system, professors, and classes.

Sarah

I think the size is just right. It's small enough where you can get to know people, but it's big enough so you don't see the same people everywhere all the time. Since a lot of people from my highschool came here, it's nice to see them every once in a while, but the campus is big enough that I don't see them all the time. I like it being in the city, too. It's nice to have places to go away from campus. There's a lot of school spirit, also which I like.

Caro

i love walking on campus. when some people first walk on they think the campus is ugly and all brick, but its the people who make it amazing. when you walk around you can see the school pride. everyone here is laid back and and pretty nice. gotta love the southern hospitality. people actually hold doors for you and smile or say hey when they walk by.

Gary

Go to Hell Carolina

Tyler

I think NCSU is a little too large. I don't see much camaraderie or unity on campus, just people walking from class to class wearing blinders. It's impossible to keep track of all the potential acquaintances, so most people tend to insulate themselves in cliques.

Ryan

the southern hospitality I would change the advising system in the college of management the size is just right People react positively and since I am from out of state people back home see it has a big accomplishment that I got in here. Class "what college town" There is a lot of school pride

Harper

The best thing at State is the amazing school spirit, students and faculty here bleed red and white. One thing I would change is the buildings. We are ranked as one of the country's ugliest campuses, but we do have some pretty buildings like at the design school or centennial, but I wish we could update some of them and give it a fresh look. I like the size of our school, I wanted to go to a big school and you can walk to class and see nobody you are know or ten people, you never know what you are going to get. They refer me to my sport's team, since we have not been doing great recently. I spend most of my time on Centennial because I am a textile student. I hate that NC State is in the capital city because we are held to different standards than ogther schools. I feel like the police are just out to get every drunk kid out there when there are real problems like burglaries, rapes, and homeless people roming around the school. We can't just have a normal college party like at other schools because it is pretty much inevitable that if it's a good enough part, the cops are going to come. And the person throwing the parry is always worried about who's coming over and worried that the cops will come. I think that the administration is good, other than the incredibly over strict policy on tailgating. We have such an amazing tradition of tailgating, that we shouldn't have to curtail our fun in the case of families being there. It is our school, and we should be able to have just as much fun as any other school does. I can't think of any recent controversies. Our school has AMAZING pride in our teams of all sports; it's really inspiring. It is unusual that anyone can ride the wolfline. Isn't that what the CAT buses are for. The homeless and crazy people that get on the buses can be a danger to students, and they are just plain weird.

Amber

The greatest thing about NC State are the opportunities-both on and off campus. On campus, there are hundred of organization in which students can participate, from fraternities to political and debate clubs to organizations specific to your particular major or career interest. The number of resources available to students for community service, career development, etc. is enormous. Then you have the Raleigh area in general. Raleigh is most definitely a "college town" with 5 universities all together in the area--but, it is also the center of North Carolina government. The surrounding area offers amazing opportunities to students both during their college career and after they graduate. The NC General Assembly and many other agencies are located just a few miles down the road, as well as the Research Triangle Park linking research within NC State, UNC and Duke. These offer great internship opportunities to students and chances to get involved in the local community. There is often a stigma that students must compete with faculty and administration in bringing about change. From first hand experience, however, I've found that if students truly desire for something to change and are willing to put in the time to talk with faculty and administrators about policies, they are usually very open to new ideas to create a better environment for students. The University is currently undergoing plans for some major rennovation on the student centers and on-campus dining opportunities to better accommodate students' needs and wants and make campus more student-oriented.

Sarah

The best things about attending NCSU are the attentive, accessible professors and strong sports program. There is a loyal following of NCSU basketball especially when playing rivals UNC or Duke and there is also a rowdy tailgating crowd the forms hours before football games. One of my best experiences if actually sports related. I'll always remember NCSU beating UNC at basketball in the RBC center in 2007 and rushing the court. The is a lot of school pride here, a lot of it pertaining to sports. I spend most of my time on campus in the English class building, in the library, or at the atrium. I also spend time at the gym where there are many great exercise classes to choose from. NCSU does not have a big college town vibe being in Raleigh, but there is a good nightlife scene on Hillsborough Street and in downtown Raleigh. A frequent student complaint is about the lack of college town feel, but Raleigh is working to revitalize Hillsborough Street to help promote more of a college feel. NCSU is unusual in its setting because though situated in the capital of North Carolina, it can often feel like a small town.
