Honestly its best know as being an option open to everyone. They have programs to make sure people are accomodated no matter their level of learning. Some people want to go to a real college instead of community and so they go here. Its a commuter college so its also a good deal cheaper without board. When I was touring the campuss I saw both young and old, high achiever and low achievers, as well as all ethnicities. That to me was the strongest proof that NEIU is meant to be accessible to all.
My school is best known for it's education program, which I am currently enrolled in. They have very good relationships with many of the chicago public schools and even some in the surrounding suburbs. The school is really best if you are enrolled in this education program because most of those who graduate form Northeastern Illinois University are well rounded and have already started working within the school system while they are in their classes.
My school is best know for being an affordable, diverse place. I myself attend Northeastern instead of another institution because it is close to my home and I know that I will have an easier time paying for my education than a more expensive institution. I am continually astounded by how much diversity there is on campus; it is a very urban place filled with people with various specialties from all walks of life.

A large number of Latino as well as Middle Eastern students attend Northeastern, along with a mix of all other races, cultures, and ethnicities. Northeastern is also well known for being slighty more affordable than most 4-year Universities in the area.
