Northeastern University Top Questions

The best thing about Northeastern is that its right in the heart of Boston. Fenway Park is right down the street (almost literally), the Prudential center is a 10 minute walk away, and the T comes right through campus, on two different lines. the one thing i would change about NU is that there is no NICE fields close by that we can use, and so i would want to put in a field somewhere close to the campus. the school size is pretty big, but i would say it is just about right for a school thats right in the middle of a huge city. when i say i go to northeastern around Boston, no one really thinks twice. but when i say it back home in Texas, people are astounded that i go to school in Boston, and think i must be really smart. i spend most of my time on campus either in my dorm building (which most are pretty nice, but some are sub-par), and also in the library when im doing work. NU's administration is pretty lame now. NU used to be about partying and being drunk all the time, but now with the new President he is trying to get NU into the national top 100 and what-not. i just say let NU be NU and keep the beer flowing like wine. the biggest controversy at NU (and the rest of boston) is that you can no longer have more than 4 people living in an off-campus apartment. this poses problems for kids who cannot afford their own apartment, or cannot pay the ridiculous amount of money NU asks for to live on-campus. school pride? hahahahahaha. only at the hockey games. probably the most unusual thing is that we are a 5-year school due to the co-op program.

When I tell people I go to Northeastern, most people respond with "In Chicago?" But that's probably because I'm from Ohio. Boston is the ultimate college town. There is no school pride here and the administration keeps trying to build it, and it keeps failing. The most frequent complaints are about unresponsive bureaucracy and the "NU Shuffle"

I would say that the best thing about going to Northeastern is the chance to Co-op. Its pretty cliche but i think it is one of the best things because you can run into someone on the street and they can be like,"Oh i am actually working at Merrill Lynch under the senior vice president" and that is something i dont know to many can say. As far as size goes i would say its prefect size. I still run into people on campus even though its a big school with a lot of people. When i tell people that i go to Northeastern they wither say, wow thats awesome, or how do you like chicago. I think thats good on some levels but the name still doesnt get recognition like i think it should. Boston is definitely a college town through and through, theres always a party or something to do geared for college kids, in fact i couldnt think of anywhere else i would rather go to school. With school pride, it is definitely something that the whole school is working on. Hockey games always have a huge turn out, but with the main sports facility off campus its hard to get a lot of school spirit going, expect when the beanpot rolls around. On the topic of complaints, the only thing i have heard is that OSCCR, the place where people who get written up are reported to is too strict, which they are. But that is basically everything ive got.

This is basically the perfect size for a school - not so big that you feel completely lost and that no one cares about you, but not so small that you know every person that passes by you. The campus is almost the best part - it's beautiful and enclosed, despite being right in the middle of the city. It's also incredibly easy to get anywhere you want in Boston or Cambridge. The main problem we have here is the NU shuffle, I would say - the administration is just generally not up to par. You get different answers from different departments about the same thing, and they're always switching people around - I've had two different advisors in the math department and two different co-op advisors.

The best thing about NU is the people. I was amazed at just how nice everyone was. Sure, everyone can clash with someone at sometime, but in general, NU students are pretty awesome. I would change the crooked administration. I worked for the school, in several different capacities, throughout my time there, and one thing's for sure: there was some fishy business on multiple administrative levels. Depending on where I am in the country, people react in one of two ways when I tell them I went to Northeastern: 1) Oh, that's a great school. My [insert relation here] went there. And 2) You mean Northwestern? On campus, I spent most of time at the ABP on Huntington and Forsyth, or at my work-study job. Boston is completely a college town, but I have to admit that I liked it most in the summer, when about a quarter of the population (being college students) disappeared. The biggest recent controversy on campus was probably all of the riots associated with the Red Sox or Patriots World Series and Super Bowl wins, respectively. There's really not a lot of school pride at NU. I think most students really like it there, but the venues to get all riled up and spirited aren't there. Something unusual about Northeastern is the schedule. Fall, Spring, Summer I, Summer II seems easy enough, but most students end up in a strange limbo of class years when they switch from classes to internships. When outsiders ask what year you are, it's hard to give an accurate answer. I ended up just telling them when I was graduating (when I knew). I really loved college, so it's hard to pin down just one experience that I'll always remember. The most frequent student complaint is probably dealing with the "NU Shuffle," which is when you go to one office to get something done, and they send you to another one, then another one, and oftentimes back to the office where you started. It's a lot like calling Comcast.

The best thing about Northeastern are the activities and events for students. The school constantly provides things to do that are actually really awesome. Co-op is the shit. The Marina Center is incredible. Northeastern is just the right size. I live off campus, but when i'm on-campus I spend most of my time at the Marina Center playing basketball. Located in a great spot in the middle of the city, between 2 major T lines. Lots of school pride.

I came to Northeastern mostly for the co-op program. One thing I'd change is the high tuition. Plus it always seems the administration spends too much funding on trying to beautify the campus. The last controversy on I can think of was in September when the computer lab instituted a print quota to limit paper. There seem to be a lot of environmental initiatives on campus lately. The new student group HEAT and existing group SEA seem to be increasing in popularity or at least visibility. I think there is a lot of school pride. Most people who are here really wanted to go here...it's a pretty big commitment with a hefty price tag.
