I attended Northern Arizona University for my Bachelor’s in justice studies, and have returned for my Master’s in social work. While NAU has some faults, there is not another university I would have rather attended. A breakdown year-to-year is necessary to clarify both Northern Arizona University’s triumphs and short comings. Freshman year is undoubtedly the most difficult, with mandatory dorm living and meal plan that is included in that first-year experience. Along with the weather shock endured by most other Arizona natives attending NAU, danger of partying while there is a snowstorm, and prevalence of marijuana, one must simply push through the first year to appreciate the better aspects to follow. However, the small class sizes, helpful teachers, staff, advisors, and accomplishable academics are enjoyed in every year. Sophomore and Junior year may be combined with this being the time that students are allowed to declare a major and begin to focus-in on their field of study. The classes not only become more interesting, but again become smaller and hands-on. The dreadful food and poor housing are no longer a complaint, simply left is the expense of living in Flagstaff, Arizona. Senior year is where all the helpful advisors and professors are most evident in preparation of graduation. The small class sizes contribute to speedy graduation ceremonies. Nothing quite compares to the NAU pride throughout the college town, only truly appreciated after leaving the school. No school can be perfect, but Northern Arizona University was and is the perfect school for me.

NAU has been a wonderful school to me for the first year of my college experience. Although I am not a big fan of large classes, most of the classes I had were fairly small and allowed me to interact with the professor. As for the larger classes, I actually enjoyed them! Even in those classes, I got something out of them. On campus, I was able to meet a lot of people and always had something to do. That being said, I did have some downtime. One of the best places on campus (personally) is the Newman Center. This is a really amazing campus!

Northern Arizona University is a great school for Science and other majors. The food at the University is ok, tastes good the first couple of months, but you will get tired of it after a period of time. There are resturants and fast food options that are near the university that are easy to access. The overall housing is bad, most of the halls need to be renovated.

The best choice if you are unsure. Nothing better than becoming a Lumberjack! I had visited Freshmen year unsure of what to see but the tours are full of information and you are given the first glance at actual life on campus. The cafe is awesome as well as good!

I love the university as a whole. The professors I've had have all been amazing, and I really feel like I'm part of a community. My one issue is the lack of funding for financial aid for students like me - the ones who you don't expect in need of aid.

I love that the campus is rather small. That means getting to class doesn't take half the day, and there is always some place close by to relax and/or eat. I also love that we are so close to down town, and other places that have food, so in case we're hungry for something other than campus dining, we can go off campus without it taking all day. It's also have very nice weather, great professors, and amazing faculty who truly care about our well-being and our success.

I have had multiple experiences at Northern Arizona University within my first year. The university is known to have a good relationship with numerous high schools. A huge advantage to me was that the school is quite affordable with many academic scholarship opportunities based off of your high school GPA. Coming from a single income family, this was the game changer. I arrived to Flagstaff Arizona, eight hours away from my Southern California home. I met a group of friends within the first two days. My entire first semester was a series of ups and downs. I had a hard time taking care of my mental and physical health. By the end of the first semester, I realized that I no longer wanted to attend that School. If that wasn't enough, the start of the second semester, Flagstaff got hit with a record breaking snow storm on the same weekend that I was bed ridden from strep throat. At that point, I had decided that I needed to find a school within the state of California. I had also decided that I would make the most of my remaining time at the university. I was able to be placed in classes that heavily influenced my future career choices. I was also lucky enough to have supportive and outgoing professors in every class. With all the negative points in my first year aside, Northern Arizona University has great staff, a beautiful campus and is an overall great place for a students first time alone. Although it didn't work for me, I learned so many life lessons in the short amount of time that I was there. For that I will be forever grateful for my time at Northern Arizona University.

I honestly enjoy the environment and accessibility Northern Arizona University offers. It's within walking distance of Target, extremely useful for supplies and food; and has amazing on-campus food locations. The housing is comfortable and spacious, and the professors are friendly and always willing to help you out if you've got questions or concerns.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Northern Arizona University has provided me with a safe learning environment so I can pursue my goals of enriching and enhancing my knowledge of subjects that I love! Also, its food on campus is lacking compared to some other schools, it makes up for it in the sense of community the students create.
