Northwest Iowa Community College Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Cher

As a non-traditional student, this is a fantastic question! I would advise myself to consider all the possiblities and career choices that are available. Attending a two-year college, such as NCC, allows you to complete a two-year degree while exploring possible careers. You can then transfer to a four-college if that is your goal. BUT while attending NCC you can experience college life, which can teach you so much about life, that is not in a textbook! I would also advise myself "Don't settle!". Try to figure out what you want out of life and go for it. You can reward yourself with an education and a career but it doesn't stop there. You can continue or you can go back later and life for a new career and education opportunities available at two-year college's such as NCC are absolutely great places to accomplish these goals. You can never learn too much whether it is from a textbook, in a hands-on lab setting, and interacting with other students. These are fabulous life experiences!! Make sure you grab as many of them as you can as you go through life.

Hey, Steve, listen to me carefully. What is it that makes you get out of bed in the morning? What excites you? What I'm trying to say is,"What are you passionate about?" That is what you should do for a career. This is America, nail 2 pieces of wood together and someone will buy it. That means you can do whatever you want. If you are passionate about something and are motivated to work at it, you can make a carrer out of it. To be successful surround yourself with successful people. Do some research and find the best place to develop your passion. Now, do some more investigating; the "best place" might not be the "best place for you." What do you like? What makes you feel comfortable? Find a place that is appealing to you and you feel comfortable at from the beginning. Don't worry, you will find you niche. Next, when you get there don't waste time. Plan a schedule and stick to it. Schedule time for studying, sleeping, and of course fun. You could be receiving the best education available, but it isn't fun unless you are having fun. Be yourself.
