Consider Northwestern! Its a completely underrated school and is a great home for 4-5 years.

People get really worked up about the weather. I have yet to experience a Chicago winter, but I have plenty of older friends from Florida, Texas, southern California, etc. They made it, and you can too if you learn to dress for the weather. As for winter depression--we ain't no Cornell. The general atmosphere is a happy one at Northwestern, and as far as I've heard it stays that way. People are supportive and concerned. The school makes an effort to plan fun events to brighten things up during the coldest months. I've had problems with seasonal depression previously, but I've been having my best winter in years so far. I do recommend getting a sun lamp if you know you have problems, though. You wouldn't think it would work, but it does. It's amazing.

You have the best of all worlds. Division I sports, the beach, academic superstars and the arts. Plus you're close to the city!

It has a number of speciatly schools that are known across the country, such as its journalism school, its communications school, engineering school, and education/social policy school.

Northwestern is very unique because of the student body the university attracts. I have met students from all over the country and around the globe. One of my favorite frequent events during the year is when I meet someone new and exchange phone numbers, only to have my cell phone read the area code and tell me what far away place my new friend is from. Aside from the social aspect, I think Northwestern pushes you rewardingly hard academically, but not over the edge to the brink of insanity.

I would seriously consider other schools.

My school is more academically prestigious. It is also the only one I applied to located in a suburb. It is located on the lakefront and is very spacious. It was the most expensive, but also offered the most financial aid assistance.

Northwestern University is known by my friends back home as a school of nerds. To be completely honest, that actually is pretty true. The reason that most of my fellow classmates are getting an education at Northwestern is because we constantly had our noses in books. That's one of the reasons that Northwestern is so special. We all have a clear vision of a bright future of countless accomplishments and leadership positions and will do whatever it takes to make our dreams a reality. Northwestern is so unique because everyone's dreams are big, no matter how nerdy.

As an undeclared major, Northwestern was the perfect selection. Its specialization in majors as specific as industrial and design engineering to horn performance easily allows the wandering high school graduate to explore options previously unthought of. With seven prestigious undergraduate colleges highly skilled in their field of study, I am exceptionally grateful that I have the ability to take classes in all the schools to find what major really suits me. Majoring in something applicable and personally enjoyable was a significant factor in my final decision, and Northwestern provided me with an impeccable choice.

Northwestern University is right on Lake Michigan, and while during the winter it is very cold, the beach of the Lake is a very fun place to hang out at during fall and spring.

Northwestern is one of the few really good academic schools that has a decent social scene as well! Plus, Evanston is totally your typical college town, but Chicago is only an el ride away!

NU is really pretty and the teachers are really friendly and devoted. It has some amazing course selections.

Northwestern has the prestige of an Ivy-leage like school while retaining a fun, community-oriented and school-spirit-filled campus. You have the benefits of a state school, with things like Big 10 football, but the competitive academics that make an NU degree so valuable.

Wonderful school...It takes going to a different university to really appreciate all that Northwestern has to offer. Down to earth, with the occasional trust fund baby! But all professors.!!!!!!!!!!! Only course taught by TA's were discussion sections. All classes were instructed by professors...brilliant brilliant professors!

NU has more resources than one student could every physically and intellectually take advantage of in four years. If you have the ambition to do 'it', whatever your 'it' is, you can do it at Northwestern.

Northwestern has an excellent study abroad program and political science program. I took full advantage of each, and got SO much out of my experience. NU encourages students to study abroad, as opposed to many other universities that discourage it. I was even able to complete a research project in that same country the following summer - and it was fully funded by NU.

A very pre-professional school. The only private BIG TEN school. Free entrance to sporting events. The only school I applied to that's in the midwest. One of the few suburban schools I applied to. There are tons of pre-meds here.

The diversity of students and the academic programs offered, and the success and strength of the alumni network.

All aspects are in the top twenty ranked schools in the country. Anything you want to do is available and awesome.

It's one of the best theatre programs in the world, located in one of the best cities in the country, and it provided the opportunity to be deeply involved in many facets of theatre without having to ignore my other interests (I'm a double major in Theatre and History). I wanted a good theatre program that wasn't restrictive in its structure, and that would provide a great liberal arts style education.

Northwestern University maintains a delightfully rare balance of social life and academics. The quarter-based academic schedule is extremely rigorous compared to other schools I applied to - Northwestern students often overload courses and spend nights in the library to keep up with coursework. Career preparation is a major amenity - there are multiple job fairs each quarter and the active career center diligently caters to student needs (rather than the whims of industry allies). Despite the academic focus, students have access to activities in every discipline, abandoning the segregation of certain majors to specifically related clubs and hobbies - truly eye opening!

What is unique about Northwestern is that I felt the most at home when I came to visit. At other schools, I did not feel comfortable in its usrroundings, not the same way I did here.

What's unique about Northwestern is that there is great geographic diversity, but the school still retains a sense of Midwestern kindness.

There's so many resources and things for you, no reason not to do anything. Provides oppurtunity that allows a great memorable college experience. People are also really helpful including the upperclassman, the professors everyone in general.

I love Northwestern. I truly hate some aspects of it (administration, certain classes) but I love the people.

The food is pretty bad in all the dining halls. Meals at dining halls are separate from the slightly better food that can be bought at the student center, which means that the money you pay for one can't be converted into the other. Students end up paying more if they want both. While the food in fraternities and sororities is a little better, it doesn't offer as many options as the food in the dining halls or student center does. At least Evanston has great restaurants, though going to them means you'll be paying more!

I'm going to be sad to leave for summer. I love it here!

If I was trying to design an ideal university, I would design something along the lines of Northwestern--except with warmer weather... So I guess maybe I'd design Stanford. NU has Ivy-caliber academics, and a student body that's more laid-back than its closest-comparatives back East. Socially, it features something for everyone--from drunken frat boys to bookish Asian lesbians. I'm truly thankful that I graduated from NU--the name alone has opened professional doors for me, and I had an incredible time, both intellectually and experientially, at Northwestern.

NU is really an amazing school academically. There is so much to learn and explore. By getting to know my teachers and T.A.s I have been given two AMAZING opportunities already this year that I would never have gotten from the school that I transfered from. However, the social scene is lame and I find the majority of people to be uptight bookworms which is unacceptable for an artistic social butterfly like myself. Also, the community is accepting of different races, religions, whatever, but its not very integrated, and if you have different/wild tastes/likes/activities/opinions than everyone else consider yourself a weirdo because everyone else here will. If you like to be by yourself with your books and maybe go to a disgustingly dirty frat party once a month to drink keg beer, but would still prefer to study all night, then NU's the place for you.

Lots of cute girls, not as many cute guys. If you live on north campus, there is more of a party school feel because it's right by the frats. If you live on south campus, there is more of a theater-y feel and it's a lot more chill.

Everything about northwestern is intense. The academics, the social activities, the students, and the partying. Like the campus is divided into North and South, the social scene is pretty much go greek or go gay.

Northwestern is a great school, and graduates will have a lot of doors open to them. If you try enough, it will set you up for success. Students are frequently insipid, shallow, and spoiled, but they are also frequently interesting, adventurous or dedicated. I don't have regrets about going to school here.

Overall, its great here- you have to take it for what it is and you'll have a great time.

nahh. norhtwestern is great, I just wish it was more party oriented

Northwestern has NO uniform experience for it's students. People within the Greek community cannot relate to the people in theater, who have no idea what it's like to be an athlete, who are baffled by the ridiculous study hours of pre-meds, who struggle to grasp the bookishness of the engineers. The two most universal experiences of Northwestern students are late night runs to Burger King, located at the south of campus, and drunken Monday nights at the Keg, a local bar. The school lacks spirit and community, not to mention a decent mainstream athletics program. That having been said, obscure sports are our forte - Women's Lacrosse, for example.
