What is the stereotype of students at your school?

From the outside, Occidental is seen as a super diverse, happy and integrated community. From the inside, the stereotype is tweaked negatively-- the student body percieves itself as divided in two: the overly active and yet closed-minded "dialoguers" and the blissfully apathetic.

The students are very liberal, all the girls are ugly, there are many racial issues.

Sometimes the Oxy community is referred to as the Oxy bubble because it is very small and people tend to feel like they know everyone. Another stereotype that usually works positively is that Oxy is a diverse school. This is somewhat true, but most people who go to Oxy can afford to go to Oxy so sometimes it does not feel like there is economic diversity.

Not too sure about stereotypes, to be completely honest I never bothered to notice them I guess. I feel there must have been some but I never thought about it. Smart students who care more about personal attention and learning the material than anything else, hence wanting such a small, liberal arts school.

Since Occidental is not widely known, many assume it is not a highly qualified school. Those, however, who do know of Oxy would likely typify the students as diverse and accepting. Students would also be stereotyped as being upper-middle class and sophisticated.

Its hard to stereotype Oxy students because the college is so diverse. but in general I would say that Oxy students are decidedly liberal, and generally from California.

Stereotypes propbably include us being pretty laid back, but extremely smart. The school is known for being beautiful and of course being in many films and tv shows (i.e. 90210, Clueless, Orange County, etc.) Also known for our stellar football team.

Oxy can be known as home to the "Claremont Rejects" or those students who didn't get accepted to the Claremont colleges and thus had to "settle" for Oxy. Students are very socially minded and the School is very P.C.

The fact that Oxy is a small liberal arts college means that a lot of people haven't even heard of it. At the Neuroscience Conference in San Diego we got a lot of suprised glances at our name tags. One of the sterotypes about Occidental is that it is a dental school. Changes are if you someone is familiar with Occidental, our students are well known as excellent communicators.

Occidental students tend to be some of the best and brightest this country has to offer. Over the years, Oxy has become more and more competitive. In addition the school prides itself on diversity among its student body, both in terms of race, religion, sexuality, and hometown.

"Diversity." That the students come from all different backgrounds or races/nationalities. The problem being that this doesn't necessarily translate into diversity of thought.

I think that a lot of people see oxy students as being naive and sheltered (living in whats called "the oxy bubble") probably because we spend most of our time on a small, very nice campus in the middle one of the most diverse and complex cities in the world.

Before I came to Oxy I heard that students quickly get coupled up and stop wearing shoes. These stereotypes are totally unrelated and totally true. Also, I heard that the student body is SUPER liberal and PC. This is also very very true and can be a great, modern lifestyle.
