Ohio State University-Lima Campus Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Angela

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to not procrastinate or shrug off opportunities to fill out scholarships. I would tell myself to not give up on my dreams because I thought I could not achieve them. I would also tell myself that I would not be able to go to my dream college my freshman year, but to start filling out scholarships now because with hard work, we can achieve success. Lastly, while making my college transition, I would tell myself to not be afraid to get involved in new activities, to meet new people, and enjoy the life we have been given.

Don't burn yourself out by taking an overwhelming amount of credits when you first start out. Keep motivated and be sure to stay on top of an organized study program. Make sure you are sure you know what you want to major in and what classes the school is requiring. Is your major impacted or not. Have a plan, realistic goals, and dont let anybody stop you because its all worth it in the end.

Anthony

If I were a high school senior again, the advice I would give myself is be ready to take college serious and fill out as many scholarships as possible because you will need them in the near future. I would also say that no matter what college is no joke and make the right decisions.

Ginnie

I attended college classes as a senior to give myself a head start. Although, if I could I would tell myself to take even more college classes. I was worried about getting behind in both high school and college if I took on too much work, but I now know that I could have easily handled the course work and would be even more ahead today. I would also encourage myself to look into all my college options and apply for as many scholarships as possibe.

Ashley

If I could go back and give myself advice about what I know now, I would make sure to tell myself not to take anything for granted. College life is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore who you are and who you want to become. It is about learning new things and seeing opportunities in a different light. College is a time to make decisions that will last a lifetime and not be wasteful. I would also tell myself to relax, enjoy, and have a great time, again!

College and high school have so many different aspects. In high school, a student who is smart can just kind of float by, not have to do a lot of work, and still excel. In college, this is not the case. A student who wants to excel, must assert themselves in study time, note taking in classes, and the knowledge of each professor's requirements. There is no black and white guidelines for every class. Each professor has his own preferences, and you must learn them, along with maintaining a level of studiousness. Learn all that you can in high school, because once you get to college you wish you remembered more.

In my time at my college, I have been able to open up and become more sociable. This was only possible to happen because of all of the friendly people who attend the college. They are eager to embrace people into their groups as long as the people are open to new ideas and bring their own opinions to the discussions. I have also learned quite a bit while I have been here. I have never been very good when it comes to English classes. I have always been at odds with my teachers in that subject. However, I had the pleasure of having a professor who broke down the conventions of writing as they were taught to me in highschool and reforming me into what I believe to be a more accomplished writer. My experiences with classical Greece and Rome has led me to pursue Classics as my minor. My father is an artist, but I didn't really inherit any of his abilities. However, I got involved with the theater department on campus and had some very pleasurable times there. Overall, I believe that this is an amazing campus.

I have gained knowledge in all aspects of life through my college experience. My professors have opened my eyes to the world of business. When I first started college I had no clue what I wanted to do, but now I know that I want a business degree. Apart from academics I have also gained leadership and communication skills. I am able to speek my mind, ask questions, give presentations, and meet new people everyday. This will help me most of all in life because they are usful skills to have in your day to day life.

I've gotten a greater sense of discipline from my college experience. I'm more devoted now to everything I do, even if I don't necessarily enjoy it. Because I have to pay my own way through college, my work ethic has gotten stronger and I'm not afraid of tough jobs. I've also become more confident in my own abilities and the fear of failure that often prevented me from doing things like entering art contests and applying for competitive scholarships has been reduced greatly. In college, I've had many great successes and a few glancing failures, and come out a stronger, more dedicated person for it. For me, the greatest lessons so far have not been learned from books or lectures, but from the new responsibilities and obligations I have as a student. I have learned so much more about myself, where I'm at now, where I want to be in the future, and how to get there. But the most valuable thing I've learned is not to be afraid of failing. Because my only true failure is when I fail to try.

I have learned more during my college experience than I ever could have imagined. Being the first of my family to go to college and a single mother my college has gave me confidence, self worth and an overall excitement of the future that I am creating for me and my children. Before I started college I felt that I was basically worthless living day to day in dead beat jobs and never getting out of the slump of poverty. That first day I stepped on to my campus I was welcomed by all these wonderful people here to show me this place of excitement and education. This being the beginning of my second year I push forward to my goal of one day becoming the brain surgeon that interests me so much. I will not turn back and I hope this experience will encourage my children later on in life to pursue their own goals as I am now.

By attending The Ohio State University at Lima, I have met many knew people and have participated in quite a few freshman programs to help me adjust to college life. Also, by having professors and other students who are not originally from America or have another country as their background has showed me a little bit of diversity through the campus. So far, by attending it's taught me a lot about being independent and that in college professors aren't going to be as lenient and as forgiving as teachers are in high school. When I graduate I think I will be a different person than when I went in because of all the things I have been exposed to from college and the things I learn will also have changed me.

Andrew

I have completed one year of college and I have found my college expierience enjoyable as well as challenging. The small campus enviromnment of Ohio State Lima has been a significant help, enabling more one-on-one interaction between me and my professors allowing greater understanding of my studies. The continued study has helped me improve upon my work ethics and study habits that where instilled in me from high school.

There are so many things that I received out of my education at OSU. I believe that the cooperative learning that my college offered helped me to become a better team player and also a better professional. OSU offers so many courses that suit so many different learning styles. I know that I felt like I was being challenged to become a better educator and better employee. I believe that the staff and campus offer so many skills to students that will aid in their development of whatever field they are pursuing. There are so many benefits of being an Ohio State Buckeye that will carry you in life. I truly feel that the name recognition of future employers benefit an OSU graduate. I believe that the reason that I got hired at my current position is because I graduated from OSU. I have also had previous potential employers comment on the fact that I did attend OSU. I loved my time at OSU and think that it is due to the fantastic staff, campus, and fellow students.

I have learned different techniques of studying as well as individual attention on the topics disscussedin class. I also liked the how the support center gave individual attention to really make sure that you can understand the material. It was important to attend because it prepares you when your are ready to tranfer to a four year college and it puts you ahead in your major. I got to meet new people and advance my skills in writing and computers as well as learn accouting which will help when it comes to runnimg a business.

Samantha

Even though I am only a Freshman in college this year, I have gained a lot from The Ohio State University-Lima Campus. Some of these skills are: communication, collaboration, networking and time management. Since the classes are so small you meet people very quickly, communication and collaboration. You also get to know most of you professors very well and this is a major key to networking. Last but not least time management. Since most student commute to school you must learn very quickly how soon you must get to school so you can walk across campus for your 8:00 am class, This also means that the area high schools and elementarys will have thier busses out so you may have to leave earlier than normal. If you have a job you must also learn to juggle your school work, your job and your family.

Mary

During my college experience, I have learned that I must give myselp ample time to complete everything I set out to accomplish. As a transfer, it has been difficult to adjust to a new environment, however, I am now in a much better place than I was before. This new college experience at OSU Lima has been very valuable to me because I have learned so much already in only two quarters than I might have only learned in four quarters anywhere else. The faculty and staff has also been of great value to me. OSU has become a joy in my life because I see everyone around me trying to excel in their field of study. This also encourages me to be a lot more efficient in my studies.

I have definately learned the importance of time management. Between going to school full time, working part time, and helping out around the house, I have had to put aside many things that I normally enjoy doing, like working on cars. I have had to rank all the things I have to do as "important" or "unimportant" in order to accomplish everything. Because I have attended college, I have definately learned what things are truely important to me., which has lead me to managing my time a little more responsibly.

Matthew

Matthew, apply for all the scholarships you can because money does not grow on trees. It will not hurt you to fill them out, because you do not want to be doing it in years time. College is expensive and you are going to have to get good grades so continue to work hard and you will do fine. Do not fall into the party scene because many people do and now they have dropped out, so work hard and be studious and you will do just fine!

Cory

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would advise myself to get the most out of my high school education. I would tell myself not to drop behind and to stay on top of my studies. I would also advise myself to take more mathematical classes such as physics and statistics, in order to help make my future college courses a little bit easier in the long run. In accordance with everything else, I would advise myself to apply for more scholarships and grants, instead of trying to pay for college all by myself with little fiinancial aid.

Katie

Being in college has taught me a lot, literally. I know more now than I ever did. Sometimes I wish I would have listened more than what I did in high school, and maybe would have taken it a little bit more seriously. Teachers aren?t stupid they obviously made through college to teach us. They know what the college experience is like, so their words of wisdom should really be listened to. I also wish not only my senior year in high school but throughout all four years I would have pushed myself a little bit harder. If I would have put the TV remote down or the computer and picked up a book maybe I could have got an A in a class that I got a B or C. By getting those higher grades I could have possibly gotten into a better University and maybe could have gotten some more help with financial aid.

Amber

I would tell myself life is going to be hard without a college education and to get serious in high school and go to a University. I need to buckle down and study hard even for the classes that i do not like because that will make the classes i have too take in college a little easier. Knowing i have to study harder because i didn't remember the tings i had learned in History especially. To work harder on my grammer because it is important and it will follow me for the rest of my life. I also know now i need to be stronger and take constructive criticism and re apply it and smile not get angry and say why can't i do anything right. There is so much looking back now that i would have done different and it all relates to my education, where it began and where i am now continuing my education and being happy and sucessful in life.

Jessica

The advice I would give myself would have to be the generic keep your grades up. It would make finding scholarships a lot easier to find. I would also tell myself that it would be a good idea to learn how to drive before coming to school. A lot of the elective classes require you to do things off campus. Without knowing how to drive you'll easily fail those classes and that's just not good. Pay attention in the math class you're taking during senior year as well, it really comes in handy during two of your math classes in college. Other than that you're doing a pretty good job. Though you're in for a tough road by taking Russian as a major. Finding scholarships is going to be tough so be smart and keep regualar meetings with the counselor.
