Ohio State University-Main Campus Top Questions

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Kristin

The most frustrating thing about attending The Ohio State University is the financial aid process. Even if you are doing well in school, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or above, if you take too many classes, you could have your financial aid put on hold. This process is incredibly frustrating, and although the persons working in the financial aid office are fantastic - the entire process leaves a less than stellar impression.

Chelsea

The most frustrating thing about Ohio State is the difficulty of the science courses which makes it hard to maintain a high GPA.

Manique

The most fustrating thing about Ohio State is probably the driving and parking, because there are about 50,0000 students enrolled in the university there is very limited parking! Also because everyone is so high-spirited about almost every varsity sports/athletics, traffic could become pretty hectic!

Molly

The most frustrating thing about Ohio State is never knowing everything that is going on. There are a million things to do on campus on any given day, but it is sometimes difficult to know what is going on.

Jonathan

The travel around the campus is very strenuos. The campus is very large and makes it very hard to get from one side of the campus to the othefr in a timely manor. Also the parking is terrible. There is not enough parking close to the classes in which you plan to take. Student fees the are required to be paid such as The Ohio Union Fee and the Cota Bus Fee, even if the student does not use or intend to ever be used. Lastly the use of books that are only supplied by OSU.

Theresa

Trying to get ahold of someone when you need a question answered regarding health insurance, financial situations, etc. You usually are in an automated system for a while and have long wait times. It is also frustrating that the health insurance really only covers you if you go to a place on campus, but I am in graduate school and don't live on campus any longer so it is very inconvienent for me.

Olivia

Large campus size can sometimes make it difficult to find buildings and navigate between classes.

Kyle

Honestly, the only thing that frustrates me about Ohio State is having to walk to class during the winter. The campus is pretty large in terms of size so it can be a long cold walk to class on some mornings.

Cameron

The most frustrating thing about Ohio State University is the sense of exceptionalism that many students feel towards other schools. Although OSU is a very good public university, it is not at the same level of some of the schools in its conference (Northwestern, Michigan) and it certainly doesn't compare (academically, in research, or in reputation) with the Ivy League. Many students that go to Ohio State only applied here and seem to be completely satisfied with the relative mediocrity they habitate on a daily basis. The prominence of sports programs at OSU also exacerbate this sense of superiority.

Camaya

The most frustrating thing about The Ohio State University is the cost of tuition, room and bord, and books.

Joce

The size of the school is overwhelming sometimes. I like that its a big school, but it's basically its own city. Finding your own niche can be hard, but once you find it- you're here for good.

Miranda

The most frustrating thing about my school is the grading system. Many of the classes at Ohio State are curved, and while this is beneficial to students it also has disadvantages. Two students could have the same grade in a course before a curve, but after the curve one student could have a whole letter grade up on the other simply because they had a different professor. This issue most likely occurs in every department and school, but it seems like it is most occuring in our chemistry branch. This being the time when my grades matter most, frustation builds.

Hilary

The most frusterating thing about my experience at OSU is my financial situation. I grew up in California and came to OSU to synchronize swim. I didn't recieve any type of scholarship to attend OSU, but thought that I would maybe one day recieve some help. However, I quit swimming half way through my junior year to focus on school. My parents aren't able to help me pay for things at all because of their own personal situations, but for the past three years it has felt like I'm drowning in debt, unable to even tred water.

Christie

The school is pretty big and that causes a few problems. When trying to schedule classes as a freshman, it gets difficult because we get the last choice of classes. Freshman may not always get their first picks of classes which can be frustrating.

Emily

There is not adequate parking.

Ryan

The most frustrating part about my school is that there is always a few of your friends wanting to go out for the night and try to get you to go along, when I am trying to study.

Wade

Not being 21 and not being able to go to the bars that i've heard about.

Jessika

There are so many people..but i've connected with few.

Andrea

It is very large, which can also create issues with getting around campus, getting lost, finding your niche and meeting new friends

Mackenzie

One of the most frustrating things about my school is that if you want help, you have to make an appointment at least a week in advance. And if you want to make that appointment, you have to go online, find the right person, e-mail them, and hope you got the right one. Getting in contact with administrators can be a little difficult.

Kelley

For me the most frustrating thing about my school is the location. Since I live in Alaska, I wish I could be closer to home but this school was the most beneficial option to my education and pocketbook. Along with the location, I wish the surrounding Columbus area wasn't so dangerous and unkept.

Hazel

The class science and math classes are always huge. I'm taught by graduate professors instead of certified teachers as well.

Alexander

The classes are so big it is sometimes hard to hold a good transfer of information between the students and professors.

Kate

Parking...

Brett

Finding out about your financial aid status is slow.

Brian

Getting out of school late (early June). Knowing that you will hit traffic most likely when you are on I-71, between Cleveland and Columbus.

Lori

The most frustrating thing about my school is when there is a specific course that I need for my major and, because of scheduling windows, I cannot get into the class and I am set back a quarter. But, even though that has happened to me a couple of times, I have been able to take the class the next quarter and I am able to graduate on time with all of my credits, so it's not that inconvenient.

Jennifer

the class sizes are very large

Michael

The most frustrating thing about Ohio State is finding off-campus housing! You have to sign leases before Christmas break or else you won't get a decent location. It doesn't help that while you're doing all of that it's final exam week!

Daniel

Being nickel and dimed by the school for the bill, and with that, the high cost of on-campus food and on-campus housing

Meredith

varsity athletes and minorities can recieve tutors free of charge however everyone else has to pay. There are students such as myself you financially cannot afford tutors and aren't athletes or minorities

Gavin

Sometimes I feel that the most frustrating thing about Ohio State is how big it really is. I think its hard to meet people and get to know them well when there are just so many people everywhere.

Mychall

The distance between classes when its a rainy day.

Jonathan

It is the biggest university in America so it can be easy to feel overwhelmed

Josue

The lectures are immense, it's very hard to be close to your professor.

Kelsey

Being an out-of-state student, the price to go here is really high.

Olivia

The most frustrating thing about school is that it information isn't just handed out. The faculty here is willing to help but only if you ask for it. I have had some trouble finding out information about my major and even my financial aid status. The school is big so there is not enough availability among staff to help everyone individually.

Joey

The size and financial situation.

jerrod

The most frustrating thing about my school is that there needs to be more tutors for higher level courses. There aren't very many science tutors for upper level courses.

Andy

Probably the fact there are always new faces everywhere you go. The classes are sometimes so big you feel as though you're being taught by yourself and not a professor.

Ashley

Sometimes the views of people are very limiting and racially motivated. Sometimes it makes you feel as though you have no common ground with the people that you encounter.

Claire

the weather

Nicholas

the size

Julie

The most frustrating thing about going to The Ohio State University is the sheer physical size of the campus. It makes almost every class, activity, or hangout place a good walk away, about fifteen minutes on average. Mix that with the cold and the snow in the winter, and by March you'll wish you went to a smaller school!

Anya

The most frustrating thing about any school including Ohio State is that the teachers give you homework like your only taking their class. And with taking 3-4 classes and each teacher treating it like it's your only one you end up with a lot of homework due at the same time.

Tricia

I find the most frustrating thing about OSU is that one must be a racial or cultural minority in order to receive any substantial financial aid. I know a lot of people who are going to college here for free, and in fact are being paid by the registrar's office just because they have 1/8 of "whatever" running through their blood. I am all about diversity and minority attendance, however, only students who are deserving (i.e. high academic and personal achievement) and are committed to their education should be receiving such aid.

Marissa

The most frustrating thing about my school is that there are a lot of conservative people who do not share my same values for environmental consciousness and outdoor recreation like hiking, backpacking, rock climbimg etc. sometimes I feel like I should have gone to a more liberal, artsy school.

Stephanie

A lot of the campus dinning places close on the weekends

Danielle

Not a lot of parking on campus.

Rachel

The most frustrating thing about my school would be the competitivene in select programs. For example, I am applying to the Special Education major. The can only accept 43 students every year, but this year we had close to 100 students apply. It is very frustrating knowing that I may not get into the major of my choice (Special Education).
