Ohio State University-Main Campus Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Briana

I wish I had known that school was going to be THE time of my life. I wish I had known that snoozing through an opportunity or not taking a class that interested me would haunt me later. I should have joined school clubs, took risks in my course choices, and made sure to actually listen to my professors. With work, bills, family, and other obligations, Ohio State offered so many options to be able to get to know yourself better. I should have taken advantage of that and appreciated it more.

Kyla

I wish I had known how much I actually would need to study for classes. I feel like people over estimated how much I would need to do in order to keep good grade. Therefore during freshmen year I studied more hours than I may have needed to instead of going out with friends, which I guess is the opposite of what many people do. But over the last couple of years I have made a more balanced schedule with school work and friends.

Before I came to OSU, I wish I would have learned that I need a cosigner to get a loan. I also wish I would have known more about all of the student activities that are available. Another thing I would have liked to learn is about on-campus jobs that do not require work study.

Laura

Study as much as possible. Even if it seems like nothing is covered in lectures, still study the book material. Also, do not get caught up in activities at the expense of studying for classes. Take a diverse amount of classes that seem interesting, not just the classes required for graduation.

Brian

Try to complete as much AP/post secondary college credits as possible. Be prepare to encounter a lot of people from a wise variaty of backgrounds, if you are more conservative this is not the school for you.

Michelle

I wish I would have known a better order in which to take my classes. Had I known all the classes I had to take prior to freshman year, I would have ordered them differently. I also wish I would have known to order my books online and to always get involved in the first month of school.

Katherine

That you never need to worry about making friends here. I was concerned that I would have trouble finding people that I could be really good friends with, but that was never a problem. So long as you have confidence in yourself you will be able to find people that will welcome you with open arms. We have an anime club, a comic book club, and a board game club (called "Board to Death"). You can't be too dorky to find someone. :)

Leon

I wish I knew that dates weren't necessary to get a girlfriend; it would have saved me a lot of money.

Miranda

Before coming to high school I not only attended school for eight hours, but I also worked part time, played sports, participated in clubs and made time for friends. Before college I thought I had time management down, now I am in class for less than half the time I was in high school, still work part time and try to participate in other activities, but the days never seem to have enough hours. I wish I'd known in high school how crucial time management was for college, and just how much of it would be needed for studying.

Lee

I wish I had known the process by which I should have gotten my books. I used to buy them for ridiculous prices in the bookstores, but now I know that one should buy them online.

John

I am drawing a complete blank on this question.

Andi

I wish I would have known how different high school and college was going to be. The academic classes are much tougher than they were in high school and I actually had to study really hard to get even a B. I wish I would have known that college would be such an exciting experience and that I should take advantage of many opportunities instead of letting them pass by because I was afraid to try something new and outside of my narrow minded assumptions of what a classroom should be. College is an amazing place to be.

Levi

How difficult it is to get started in the right direction academically. Ohio State University isn't easy in it's curriculum. You must be able to keep up from the beginning. I would have sharpened my study skills before becoming a college student. I would have been ready for the open-mindedness that is required for sucess here.

Jessica

How much of a difference it is between high school and college. More responsibility on yourself and it's hard not having to go to class everyday and not having attendance being taken. It makes you more self-controlling because you have to be to do well in college. You have to have the willpower to go to class and do your work.

Brittanie

I wish I would have known that I would have to study three times harder than I did in high school. I also wish that I would have valued my education more by learning and not memorizing becasue I forgot some stuff that I learned in high school that comes up in classes that all students have to take which are referred to as the General Education Curriculum (GEC's) and professors assume that students already learned some the information so they pick up material from where high school should have left off.

Jerry

College demands much academic effort to encourage the futures of students, but I also believe it demands much social effort. No longer was I under the roof of my parents; I was now a socially recognized adult with reponsibilities handed to me in one day. It helped me to be more sensitive to people so I could understand the situations friends bring. In that way, I learned a valuable lesson on how to respond an communicate with friends with all types of backgrounds and problems.

Rachelle

I wish that I would have known how much time was needed to study. It is a completely different world in college and it takes all of a students effort to earn the best grades. Lastly, I wish I would have known about all of the different student organizations in order to get involved and meet more people. There are so many opportunities, but they are sometimes difficult to find.

Ryan

That you really need to attend class. Some people say that they dont need to go to class but that is a joke. Class attendance is a must.

Kayla

I wish I would have known how fast paced everything is. My chemistry class covers a chapter a lecture. I feel like I hardly have time to do anything besides work and study. Jessica

Before coming to this school, I wish I knew to focus on academics first and foremost. I was actually told very often to join organizations and to meet new people. Therefore, I thought the most important thing to do upon coming to college was to socialize. Now in my second year, I realize that this is not case. I have a large group of acquaintances, several close friends, and I am in a long term relationship. However, I feel that because I was so concentrated on making friends, I have not achieved the grades that I could have otherwise.
