Prairie View A & M University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kiara

I would tell them to find a college where they feel that they can get the best education. So many students make the mistake of choosing a school just because their best friend is going or because they know somebody that already goes there. That is one reason why the freshman drop out rate is so high. I chose Prairie View because I liked the way the Psychology department is run. My major is of course psychology so i figure this is a place where I can get the most out of my education.

The advice that i will give the parents or future college students is to choose a school where they will feel comfortable. A school where the major you pick is available and know that they will succed in. Where they know that they can focuse in school but at the same time have fun to not stress yourself. Talk to students who go to that school and have a tour of the school. To also have the understanding on how ur financial aid will affect them in a positive or negative way. Finally, research the choices of schools they made for their status.

If you want an education... Don't send your kid to PV. There really is no real learning.

I would tell the parents and students to think about what they really want from a college and its very important to establish a major that one its narrows down your college choices. Choose the best location for the student to live because it could possiblily effect the students learning abilities. Choose a college thats best for your major and research the college's scholarships and any financial aid money they have able for the students major.

My advice is to let your children choose the college they would like to attend. Don't be pushy and bossy about their final decision because in the end your child will be attending that particular school not you. I also encourage the future students to not choose a college just because their best friend or boyfriend/girlfriend is attending it. All because it works for them doesn't necessary mean it will work for you. Try to visit the colleges or universities that fits your future career and will help you to succeed in the near future. After you have picked your school start making new friends and try to socializing with your fellow classmates. Yes going to college is about getting a degree and making money but having a little fun while you're there won't hurt.

I would make sure that the college caters to the needs of their child whether it is concerning their race, gender, physical and mental capabilities, and major.

The advice I would give parents and/or students about finding the right college experience would be, to make sure this is a campus where you do not mind getting your education, for the consecutive months or years you will be there. This can be done by making campus visits. Try and make the campus visit during an active part of the school year to get a real feel of what the campus is like. Don't attend the college if it does not have the major you would like or compromise your education plan and career goals. Check the graduation rate for men and women for the entire student body, and then check the graduation rate for the men and women pursuing the same profession. This helps you determine the difficulty of staying focused on campus and leaves you to find out why, but don?t let that frighten you.

When looking for the right college all i can say is simply be true to yourself. Students dont go out there and choose a school that your parents want you to go to or because all your friends are going there. You have to choose that school that is going to fit your needs. Such as you must choose a school that fits your major, will accommodate your lifestyle and let you be open to new things. When i was choosing a school those are the things that i looked for when i was applying. Once you choose that school of your choice your college experience is bound to be nothing but nothing but good. I guarantee it. Also once you get to that school be open minded about everything. You will be surprised at the new things will like when you give everything a try. My favorite motto is " you wont know until you try" and being in college thats a phrase i live by.

Kiara

It is important to choose the college that you feel is right for you. Don't follow your friends or family or significant others. Take the time and really put your priorities in check.
