What are the academics like at your school?

Hayley

A majority of the professors try to learn your name. I would say most of my teachers know mine. Class participation is certainly common and usually makes up a percentage of your grade. My favorite class was Drama 150. Never could I have imagined how much that class helped and changed me! It was an awesome class that helped me build an extreme amount of confidence acting and speaking in front of people. By the end, everyone has become friends and we were all so supportive of each other. My least favorite class was probably English 102. It's a required course here at Quinnipiac, and it was a LOT of work, and I do not think I really learned that much from having to take it. Quinnipiac's academic requirements are perfect -the core curriculum and major requirements are very fair and reasonable. My major is Communications - specifically Media Studies. All of my professors so far are very knowledgeable in their field and encourage all students to share their ideas and opinions. I also am a minor in Spanish. The Spanish department here is WONDERFUL. All of my teachers are EXTREMELY enthusiastic about spanish and really make classes interesting and engaging. I visit a select few of my professors during their office hours outside of class, but I don't spend really any time with them anywhere else outside of the classroom. If you opt to be a health science or business major, then Quinnipiac trains you for a job, but if you're more interested in communications or liberal arts, then your education at Quinnipiac is more geared toward learning for its own sake. Students most likely study 1-5 hours a day at Quinnipiac, depending on their own personal workload.

professers know you, class sizes arent that big. my favorite class is history, but my criminal justice classes are just as cool. i hate psychology with mattia, dont take it. class participation is pretty common in most classes, intellectual conversations outside of class don't happen. students are not competitive, the most unique class i will be taking is forensics with criminal justice, and north american indians. i dont spend time with professors after class, but theyre always available and some like to eat their lunches with students.

Ashley

Great

My professors do know my name, but I go out of my way to make sure they do. I'd say less than 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students here do anything to get themselves noticed within the classroom and fail to bring any conversation outside of the classroom. I personally think that discussion is often held to a minimum because students are hesitant to respond to questions or suggest an idea. Quinnipiac education is definitely geared towards getting a job. I am not involved in the health sciences department but many students I talk to are just barely getting by and they will continue to do so until they have their degree and can get a job. If anyone is to be blamed I would put the blame on the students because I usually like to give professors the benefit of the doubt and assume they are doing their job to the best of their ability, giving every student the chance to do well. That's how I feel about the professors.

Class sizes are small here...I have only been in two classes where there were around 60 people in them. Some professors choose to learn their students' names and others don't...it all depends on who you get. Different programs require different things of you...the heath science majors tend to spend more time hitting the books than the business majors do. I find that students in my major (Physical Therapy) are very competitive...we are required to be. We all have to maintain a 3.0 to stay in the program, so students in this program have to make sure they are on top of things. Quinnipiac requires a lot from you academically...they expect excellence and if you're not doing well, your professors and your advisor will definitely let you know and send you somewhere to get help. Quinnipiac does provide a service called the Learning Center. The Learning Center is a peer tutoring center that helps students who are struggling in their classes. You sign up for as many appointments as you need in as many classes as you need and students who have done well in the courses in the past help you out...I used it a lot my Freshman year.

Stephanie

Favorite class is my drama english class where i got to go to 4 plays, 1 in new york city and some at yale. I got to read and review play productions. There are many intelligent people here. Students help one another in classroom. I am only a freshman so i havent had a chance to take many unique classes. But im taking nutrition next semester. Professors are very helpful and are willing to help students outside the classroom. The nursing program is hard, but great professors who know their stuff. Quinnipiac nursing program gets us ready for working in the hospitals ect.

Amanda

The academics are significantly more challenging than at other schools. However, health science and business majors seem to have a heavier workload than communications and liberal arts majors.

Morgan

Due to small class sizes professors always seem to know your name and class participation is very common. I am a math major and in the 5 year masters program for education. My classes have been great so far. Some have been difficult but there is always a lot of group work and tutoring available. We have the learning center where you can go and get tutored for any subject for free. And all professors have office hours and are usually available to help.

John

Almost all of my professors know my name. The ones who do not are adjuncts. My favorite class is any of the classes I take in the business school (I am a finance major). The most unique class I have taken is my Digital Design class. Here I learn how to use Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other design programs. All of my professors have office hours if I need extra help. My only complaint about the Quinnipiac academics is regarding English. The freshmen English program is POOR. Had I known how poor it was I would have taken it during the summer. You do not receive grades, so when you open up your report card during winter break or in the summer you could be in for a surprise! As previously mentioned I am a Finance major. This is a program inside the business school. The business school stresses how important it is for you to work hard in school. Even as a freshman here they tell me to always have a resume and business cards. I am in a class that specifically prepares you to go out and get an internship that will hopefully lead to a job.

kristin

the academics here are great, everyone knows that..at least as far as my knowledge in the business school goes..my professors have always known my name and act like they care. i dont know about my favorite classes but professors, prof rounds, english; ball, econ; kevin taylor, ethics; cadden, MG; kolb, law; they were all engaging and fun and i loved going to their classes. least faavorite classes - i had to take an arts class and the only thing open was drama and i hated that class. students study based on how uch they care. some are always in the library, some are never, its depends. class participation depends on the teacher, yes students talk outside of class, they are very competitive, the most unique class? i dont know, i guess the drama class, im in mg and i start gerontology next year. it is interesting, im enjoying myself; i do spend time with teachers outsidde of class; i dont necessarily think the requirements are necessary but i get the whole, well-rounded student thing; and as to where its geared? i guess its what you hvae in mind for yourself, wha t you know, like, if you know what you want to do, its easier for you to get a job but if your still unsure then you have to figure that out after school but qu gives a lot of opportunities for networking and they have job and career fairs so thats very helpful

Katelyn

I came into QU as a business student, so I can really speak best about that. The business school gets a ton of opportunities for the students, from mock career fairs, real career fairs, mock interviews, guest speakers, and classes on must-knows of the business field. Another benefit to it being a smaller school is the professors know you and call on you, by name.

Shelby

Becuase the classes are small and professors teach all classes, the professors get to know each student very well. Most professors give their home or cell phone numbers to students and encourage them to call with any questions or concerns. Because classes are so small, class participation is encouraged and most classes are discussion based, not lecture based. Attendance is also taken into consideration for many classes.

Rachel

Most professors know names. My favorite classes are my sciences (Chemistry, Biology) which is ironic because they were the ones I was most scared about! Certain classes such as QU seminars and English classes require class participation but those classes are usually so small (10-20 students) and comfortable that no one has a problem talking. I do not think students are competitive at all, most people try to help each other. I have met with one professor outside of class just for help on an essay-- I recommend it with a tough grader. I think the academic requirements are reasonable, I am in Nursing and must maintain a 3.0-- I don't think people with less than a B average should be administering medicine in a hospital! A 3.0 is not as easy as it seems though, I had no problem getting all A's, and here it is kind of tough to maintain even B's in some classes, but you definitely learn study tricks as you go along. Education is very career oriented-- at some other colleges my friends are taking all these unneccessary core classes, yet all my classes are geared to my major (with the exception of 2 or 3).

Brianne

Class sizes are small and professors get to know you. They are an email away and are always willing to meet for extra help. You are definitley able to develop close relationships with these people and they are inspiring. I study every day for at least 4-6 hours. The nursing program is very competitive, but I love it. I knew it was going to be a lot of work when I entered as a freshman. The professors want you to succeed, but they don't hold your hand. You realize what you need to do in order to learn as much as you can and they help along the way. QU offers one of the few "Holistic" nursing programs in the nation. They teach students to treat the patient as a whole person (physical, chemical, emotional, psychological, etc.) and not just by the disease they have. I believe every school should teach their nursing students to care for their patients holistically. The program requires you to maintain a 3.0 average every semester and overall (accumulative). You must maintain at least a C or above in all science/nursing classes.

Allysa

Most professors know my name, i have yet to have a lecture class. My favorite class is Journalism 160 because i can be creative while learning how to write correctly. I do not study all that much, but i know that anyone in a Health Sciences major studies a lot. Class participation is pretty common, even in the early morning classes. Many professors know how to get students to discuss ideas. Sometimes I walk past students who are talking about elections and things outside of class, but no one really seems to want to because that involves "school." I feel like students are competitive, especially when it comes to clubs like Student Government, but not so much in classes. The most unique class I have taken would be my EN102 class because we learn about topics such as sexism, racism, and controversial things as opposed to boring readings. I am a broadcast journalism major and a sports minor. I am extremely happy with all the classes so far in those fields and cannot wait to take more. I do not spend time with the professors out of class but they all are very good about e-mailing me if i need their help. Even though it is tedious and annoying, i think it is better to be well-rounded and specialized, however i do not know why i need to take a science. I feel that the education is geared towards getting a job because everything you are learning is about the real world and things you will need to know for a real job.

Andrea

Since the school is not too large, the classes stay fairly small. Most classes are 25 people, although some of the science classes are up to 35 people or so. The labs are small with about 10-15 people usually. The library is open 24/7 which is very helpful. Professors are often readily available to help outside of the class. The health science fields are often fairly competetive and challenging. The library also has study rooms for students to study in groups for tests and work on projects.

Tate

Classes aren't too easy and not too hard. Business school is very good and prepare you for the real world.

christine

The professors here are great and make themselves very available to you, some of them even give you there home number and email so that you can reach them whenever you have a question.

Emily

Every professor I have had so far knows my name and I have not had a class larger than 30 people, which I love. Class participation is something that has been important in almost all of my classes, which I don't mind because I enjoy class discussions.

Blake

The classes here tend to run small, which is good. My biggest class so far has been a little less than 30 students, and most are around 20. Most professors learn names pretty quickly, because since the classes are so small there's always some degree of participation. I'm a history major, and my favorite professor so far has been one of my history professors. He helped me out with a scholarship I'm in the running for, and he definitely taught me a lot.

Daniella

Professors do know my name. My favorite class is English, and each student becomes very involved in class discussions. My least favorite class is calculus. Students study a great deal and put a good effort into work in each class. Class participation is mostly common. Often, QU students have intellectual discussions outside of class concerning the upcoming elections and other controversial issues. Students are not really competitive, and everyone is willing to help one another. The most unique class I have taken is English because my professor has opened me to a new way of thinking and analyzing text. I do not spend much time with professors outside of class unless I need extra help. Quinnipiac's academic requirements are fair, just like any other college's. Education here is geared towards learning AND preparing us for the real world.

Heather

All of my professors know my name and I truly believe all professors make a conscious effort to get to know me. I have taken many teachers multiple times and with each new time I enroll in their class, I know exactly what I am getting. Most teachers at Quinnipiac are caring, understanding and always willing to help.

Caitlin

Yes, professors know our name. Students study a lot or a little depending on their major. Health science more often studying. Yes, class participation is common. No, no intellectual conversations outside the classroom. Yes, students competitive. My major is international business with a minor in sociology. No, I don't see my professors outside of class. Education is geared toward a job in my major.

Kristin

my major is marketing so those are going to be my favorite classes. however, one of my other favorite classes was international business. i learned a lot about culture and different countries which lead me to a minor in anthropology. i think that if students would just let themselves think instead of trying to fit a mold, they would discover many things about themselves and about their QU community. many people told me that an econ minor or a finance minor would do me better in the business world but i didnt listen.

Lindsay

I am a business management major and one of the best classes I ever took was with professor Bellizzi. He run a very unorodox class, but he has the biggest heart for teaching. He is a rare catch and I have enjoyed many of his classes.

amy

professors know you because of the small class sizes. students are somewhat competitive. when i came in freshmen year, i was really surprised because i didnt expect some of the classes to be as hard as they were.

Paige

i love the academics. the teachers are mostly great, really want to teach you and help you learn. some are better with names than others. i think that at qu i'm actually learning things that matter towards my major. and that will help me later on in life.

Dale

nice small classes and carring teachers. search qureview to make sure you dont get a bad teacher

Tristan

I really dont like to core curriculum or the way the administration reacts to the opinions of the students. Most of the professors know my name- but I found that classes were a lot easier in general than I expected. Most of the students I have been placed into groups with in class don't care about their grades and I end up doing all the work. I love my public relations major, but we need more classes that have to do with the major, and less science and computer programming classes. I don't think QU helps enough with internship and job placement or research.

Steph

Professors here are all mostly very willing to help and be there for you. The learning center is a great resource that I have used often. It definitely prepares you for the future.

Katelyn

when you have a good professor it's amazing, when you don't have a good professor it kinda sucks

Melissa

Yes my professors know my name. My favorite class is child development and my least favorite is physics. Students study often and class participation different depending on the class, but often relatively minimal. Child Development Psych is the most unique class that I've taken. My major is physical therapy or education. Quinnipiac is geared toward getting a job and learning for its own sake.

Julia

The academics here are very good. There are a lot of majors to choose from, and each one is looked upon very seriously. The physical therapy program is a popular one here, and there are also many people in the business school, as myself. The business school has a very effective course plan and is extremely helpful for everything we learn later down the road.

Amanda

I'm in a really good program-Nursing. It's very demanding; we need a 3.0 GPA every semester and cumulative. I know most of the students in my classes just because we are around each other all the time. The classes i have taken that aren't nursing related I haven't enjoyed so much. I felt that students never came to class and nobody did any outside work until it came time for the test. For example, I took an Economics class Sophomore year, which was probably my least favorite class that I have taken. The professor was rude to me and was reluctant to give help when I needed it (i'm really bad at econ). The professors in the nursing program, while their classes are difficult, are always there if you need help in any way. I already feel prepared to go out and get a job as a nurse becasue of the program here.

Alex

most professors know your name. Favorite class is anatomy because of the professor. Least favorite are the qu classes because all the teachers take it too seriously and give too much busy work. Students study if they want to do well. Class participation is common by a few group of kids.

Jackie

My least favorite class is Qu 101. For a class like this the curriculum should be completely the same for all the different sections of the class. Some classes are fly by classes where you go and sit there for an A grade and others are rediculous with the work that you are given.

Carolyn

I think the academics at Quinnipiac are better than most people give them credit for. And while everyone says the health science majors have it the hardest, that's just because they have more work. Us liberal arts kids actually do a lot of work also and it's not as easy as everyone thinks. The professors always knew every student's name, however students don't participate in class a lot.

Ashley

I know all my professors name and they mostly all know my name as well. In the school of communications most of the professors have actually worked in the industry so it's definately a plus to get their insider information on the business. Students that I've come across don't really seem that competitive, but everyone spends a lot of time on their homework, and in the library

KC

Despite the fact that a few of my classes have over 50 people in them, the professors know every student's name. I feel like raising the GPA requirement for the Dean's List makes people take a little more pride in their grades, and in the school of health sciences especially I feel like there is some competition. The professors make every effort to make themselves available to students outside of class. It's impossible not to study often for science classes, but if you're willing to put in the effort the classes aren't too bad.

Jessica

classes are small so professors do know your name

Barbara

I've had good professors at Qu. I particularly like the professors in my history major and journalism which will be my minor because I feel like they really care about the student's needs and they're very approachable.

Sabrina

At Quinnipiac, class sizes are small so professors can identify each of their students. Class participation is very common in classes because it is a large part of the grade for many classes. For Quinnipiac's academic requirements, I believe that they attempt to make us well rounded students. In the school of liberal arts, we are required to take 7 credits in science, at least 3 credits in a foreign language as well as 200 and 300 level classes outside of our major.

Liz

professors know my name, nursing majors study alot, not everyone else, students are competitive

Sarah

The entry level masters of physician assistant program is one of the leading PA programs in the country. After four years students graduate with a bachelors of health science and continue straight on into the graduate PA program where they graduate in 2 1/2 years with a masters of physician assistant. The program is very competitive and classes are challenging.

Marisa

Small class size at Quinnipiac definitely holds true. I find that my teachers always eventually learn everyone's name by the end of the semester if not at first and I think that it has a lot to do with the fact that class sizes are rarely too big. I also do believe that Quinnipiac students have intellectual conversations outside of class. Being in the honors program here, I definitely think I see that more than others might.

Liz

I believe the academics are excellent here at quinnipiac. However some of the teachers are less then excellent, some simply teach from powerpoint presentations and do not care about the course material or the students. It is rare to find these teachers but they are there.

Chris

I haven't had any particular problems with any of my professors. Most of them have been very nice, accomidating, and personable. Some teachers are harder than others, and not all of my classes have been enjoyable, but for the most part my encounters with my professors have been very pleasant.

Christy

- all my professors know my name - well-educated and enthusiastic teachers - love my major so far

Nicole

The professors really try to get to know you and want to get know you. They want to learn your name and get to know you on a more personal level. Professor Netter (MA110) wants to see you succeed and makes himself available to make sure that each student does the best to their ability.

Laura

Academics here are what you ake of them. Some people live in the library, others sleep all day! It's all up to you!
