Quinnipiac University Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Alyssa

Most of my time on campus is spent in the library or in the lab because I have a pretty demanding schedule, however, I don't mind it all that much because I take pride in my work. There is always an opportunity to meet with a professor if I need help with something. I feel that the communication between professors and students is really strong and I love that about Quinnipiac.

Nicole

Here at Quinnipiac, the classroom size is fairly small. In this environment, students are able to seek their professors for help. All of my teachers know my name which makes for a better learning environment.

Jessica

Some professors know their s tudents names. It depends on how many questions you ask in class, because usually when a student asks one the professor asks their name and its more likley that they will remember you. Class participatoin is common in some classes that involve discussions.

Sarah

its nice that professors try to get to know me and they are approachable and always willing to help. the competition is high, but that gives us more incentive to do better if there is competition.

Emily

Quinnipiac definatly prepares you for graduating by giving you a well rounded education and the support you will need for entering into the work place post graduation. Students are able to get the classes they want and explore other options in taking electives. Alot of the opportunites are hands on so its great practice for entering the working world.

Arielle

I know all of my professors names and most of them know mine. Quinnipiac students are able to have intellectual coversations outside of class and are often seen meeting eachother in the library to study.

Rebecca

I am a math and secondary education major. It is awesome but very difficult and stressful at times. Some great teachers are Dr. SHaverdian and Dr. Rothman!!! I think the standards are set really high to push us and I really like that. I think I will have a very easy time getting a job after school.

Colleen

The professors are great, in my opinion. All of mine had made the effort to know all their students and I've always felt like i can approach them to ask questions or for help. My favorite class was an art class last sememster because it was very relaxing and a nice break from regular academic classes. I think students definitely are competitive with each other, which also makes people work harder. The academic requirements are a pain because there are certain requirements such as science credits, and I am a communications major, meaning there is a very very small chance i'll need biology in my field, so it just takes up more time and i cant focus as much on my own major requirements.

Brianne

Professors know our names. Participation is common and there are conversations within classes. Class sizes are small. My department is especially small. The only negative to it is that it is a mainly female major and most of my classes are all women.

Sasha

i love the small settings of the class rooms, i like how the teachers here have experience in their work. they are usually willing to help... and i like how they dont really like grading but they have to do it for the university

Allie

The academic programs at Quinnipiac range from Liberal Arts to Health Sciences. You can get your doctorate, your bachelors or a masters. I have enjoyed my time as a public relations student with many different classes under my belt. The one good thing about the academics in my "school" is that a lot of them are hands on. You arent sitting in a lecture hall but instead interacting with the professor and creating or implementing projects that will assist you in the real world. One of the best parts of the classes here are their sizes. Due to the fact that they aren't huge lectures, you are able to connect with the professors on a different level and get the attention and help that you deserve.

Emma

All of my professors know my name because my classes are a good size. My favorite class was my freshamn English class because my professor made it really interesting. My least favorite class was Math 100 because I hate math and my professor was not helpful. I know my roommates and I study a lot and the library is never empty even on the weekend. The most unique class I have taken was my sociology class, my professor was so interesting and brought a lot of real world experience to the class. I am an English major and I was just accepted to the Masters program for Elementary Education. The English department requires we take a wide range of classes which is nice because it makes us well rounded and the Education program is tough but so worth it. I think the education is geared towards both. An big emphasis is placed on learning to gain knowledge however, the knowledge gain will help in getting a job after college.

Kelly

Class sizes are typically small, and professors really try to help you out academically (at least in the school of health sciences). GPA requirements for health sciences are typically around a 3.0 cumulative, and the emphasis is to help each other continue in a program rather than to compete against each other. I'm very satisfied with my academics and trust that Quinnipiac has one of the best programs nationally for my major. I don't really get to take many electives at all, so I don't have much of a chance to take unusual or "fun" classes, but it's what you sacrifice for the end goal, I guess. You really get out of it what you put into academics.

Dale

The class sizes are perfect, and I truly believe that the faculty really cares about students and helping them succeed in not only assignments but in life.

Jacque

All the professors who make an effort, learn your name wihtin the first two weeks of class and Quinnipiac is very good with getting a job if you are graduating and helping you learn about job opportunties that are out there.

Dana

In the health sciences, barely any of my teachers knew my name. Now I am taking Comm./Business classes and they all do. I don't think QU students have too many intellectual conversations out of class. I think professors are very willing to give help/meet out of class. I think the academic requirements are good, and the education i'm getting is very good...however I'm a little mad they changed the requirements for getting graduation honors (magna/summa cum laude) in the middle of our time at QU. We should have been grandfathered in.

Sarah

I enjoy my education classes, I find that they are very personal because they are small. The professors know everyone's names, and it is discussion based which is better than just being lectured at. I feel that a majority of the students here can have an intellectual conversation outside of class, but there are some students here that most definitely cannot. The most unique class I have taken would either be Human Sexuality (PS 210) or Salsa Dancing (PE 150). Both of these classes were a lot of fun. Sometimes I feel that Quinnipiac's academic requirements are too rigid, and they do not leave enough room to let students take classes outside their major.

Lauryn

Very good academics. The professors all care about you and your education. They work hard and are always available to help you out. They want you to succeed in school and afterwards in life.

Nicole

Themost unique class I have ever taken is psych 210 human sexuality. It is very different and challenges conservative views in a postive way.

Anida

Hard yet all college work is hard

Christine

I am in the undergraduate Physician Assistant program which is highly competitive. In health science majors, students study a great amount and actually have to work for their grades. The other schools are looked at as a joke by Health Science majors becuase those students don't do near as much work as we do, but complain and act as if they have no time.

avery

I'm a staff member.

James

I believe the academics in the health science department are really good! The professors in the IDD department are really great, even the adjuncts. They are really helping me take advantage of the program, and the opportunities that I can get in this area. I do think they should be harder on the business students, no offense, but a lot of them are not so bright, and just like to party and do stupid things.

Caroline

One thing Quinnipiac strives for is to give you the best possible academic experience. In my experience here, so far they've done a good job. I know all my professors by first names, and they all know mine. My favorite class has to be Management 210. In this class we never hear a lecture. We're broken into small groups of five people who you will work with for the entire semester every single day. We're assigned a student consultant who monitors how we spend our time. It is up to us to teach ourselves the material, and develop leadership skills. With little lead way from my professor I've developed more as a person, and leader through this class then I have in any other setting. In every class i've had here in class communication is huge, kids are not afraid to voice opions and ask questions. You'll learn alot from your classmates.

Jess

Overall, I have been really pleased with the quality of education I have recieved here. With an exception of one professor (in four semesters) I have been impressed with the expertise and information the professors have been able to provide me with. One of the best things about this school, in general, is that professors tend to be really good at getting back to students with emails and will go to impressive lengths to schedule meetings outside of class if needed.

stefani

The adjuncts here are amazing. These professors actually work in the real world, so they know what it's like to be in school and have a job. Take one of them - it is worth your tuition payments. I don't find QU students to be very intellectual - but many of them have great personalities and other good qualities. QU students seem to be more well-rounded than other students, and they tend to be involved in a lot of activities.

Amanda

all of the professors i have been in contact with have been very eager to get to know me and to help with any problems i encounter with their class or the work i am assigned. i have a fair amount of intellectual conversations with my friends outside of class and i find it refreshing and engaging. the students are not very competitive and are also eager to assist me with classwork and i am eager to do the same with them. the deans of the schools of communications and liberal arts are easy to approach in an informal fashion and are extremely available and helpful with questions and concerns that i have. there is a career services department geared specifically toward getting students internships and there are some majors that tie internships into requirements to graduate, this way students get the work experience they need to get a job when they graduate.

Brett

Professors absolutely know your name, and most encourage you to e-mail or call them at any time if you have questions or concerns. As a journalism major, my favorite class was Presenting TV News -- we did a live newscast every week... writing the scripts... editing the packages... anchoring the show... etc. It was such a great hands-on learning experience. Class participation is not only common, it's required for most classes. I was a journalism and Spanish double major, so it should go without saying that class participation was essential for success in both majors. Now as a working professional, it's clear to me that Quinnipiac prepared me so well for the "real world." My education was very well-rounded.

Cassie

The class size is just right for me. My professors are very approachable and qualified. The most unique class I've ever taken was probably my music class which forced me to go to the opera in New York City. I ended up really enjoying it and will go back soon. I've enjoyed almost all of my classes and I really feel that the professors like what they are doing. Studying time varies depending on your major. Health science majors always have the most work. Students are extremely competitive but for the most part are willing to work together.

Jen

I have found the academics at Quinnipiac to be a definite strong point. The largest class I have had was 35, but the professor still knew all of our names. The small class sizes foster a tight knit community within the classroom. Professors are always willing to meet with you before or after class, and they are very understanding. The University has also begun to offer a wider variety of electives including Anthropology courses and Forensic Science Labs. I have had a wonderful experience with almost all of my classes and professors!

Ally

Professors at Quinnipiac do know your name. they care about how you're doing in the class, and if you need help, they provide it for you! My favorite class, would have to be journalism. Our professor asks us to go do field work, attend lectures and events on campus and write about them. Students here like to have fun, but do their work before hand. Students here try their best and push themselves, but don't become uptight about it. I'm a public relations major in the school of communications. The communications school here is amazing, they have a great factility which includes an all HD studio for the student channel Q30 which is similar to the one used at NBC. They teach you for the real world, not just to be knowledgeable.

Mike

I feel that most professors here, at least most of the ones I have had are great teachers and definitely take the time to learn your name and who you really are. I have had some great professors and some bad ones, but much more good than bad. I feel that I have to put in an average 2 or 3 hours per night doing reading or writing assignment, or working on projects. As a Media Production major I now spend a good amount of time working with Final Cut or writing scripts for studio. Media Production falls within the school of communications which has an AMAZING facility. The mass communication building is one of the coolest places on campus. Qu has a completely state of the art high def TV studio, Pro tools edition suite, and about 25-30 imacs all with final cut pro and tons of other awesome applications. I would say certain majors are more competitive than others and some students do compete for the better GPA. I do feel that may students have intellectual conversations outside of class frequently. My friends and I have fun but also tend to have many intellectual conversations about a wide range of topics. Education at Quinnipiac is definitely geared to make you a well rounded education person, but also to be excellently trained in your major and be prepared to get hired and have a very successful career.

Amanda

I believe that all of my professors know my name and they know who I am as a person as well. My favorite class that I've had at Quinnipiac would have been my history class because you could tell that the teacher truly cared about all of his students and he truly loved the subject matter that he was teaching. Since he loved teaching the information to his students I believe that I learned more from him. My least favorite class would have had to have been my Introduction to Psychology class because the teacher was absolutely horrible. You could tell that he didn't care an ounce for the students and he was a real jerk when it came to a lot of things. He was a terrible teacher and he doesn't deserve to be teaching classes at such a great school. I believe that many students don't study at all, but all of the Health Science students (like myself) are in the library as much as possible and studying all the time to keep up with all of the information they need to learn for their classes. I believe that class participation is only a common thing if it is in a class that is not part of your major. All teachers love when students participate but when you're in a class that is all about learning the material 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and listening to what the teacher has to say you don't need to participate, but instead listen actively. I believe that many Quinnipiac students have intellectual conversations outside of class, but sometimes it's nice to just unwind and not talk about anything intellectual when you've had a very long day of classes. I believe that all of the students are competitive within their majors and schools because we are all here for an education and in the end we are all competing against each other for jobs. I haven't taken any unique classes because within my major you aren't given the option to take any classes that you choose to take, but instead you are given the classes that you have to take. I am in the Health Science department looking into getting my Doctorate for Physical Therapy. I go to office hours and other things such as that when it comes to spending time with professors outside of class. I agree with the Physical Therapy course load 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} except for the seminar classes that we are required to taking. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that we have to take this seminar and I don't agree with it at all. I believe that Quinnipiac is geared toward both getting a job and learning just to learn. I believe that Quinnipiac feels that it is necessary to learn things just to know them, but that in the long run all of this information will be important to you someday in your life and your job.

Amanda

Professors DEFINITELY know your name. Class size is relatively small- usually no more than 30-35 kids. Its a real benefit though because then you get a lot of individual attention. I am a Physician Assistant major and its a pretty small program at QU- currently in my class there are only 18 other students. Its hard. There is really no riding the edge in this program. It is a very rigorous schedule of about every science course you can ever possibly take. You have to really want to be a PA if you are in this program and half the time alot of people drop out or get kicked out. My class started with 30 students and in 4 years have dropped 11 students.

Erin

My experience with professors has been AWESOME, but partly because im a kissass who loves her major. I personally dont have to study that hard alot of my friends are constantly at the library or pulling all nighters. EN101 and EN102 are required for all freshman and I can't lie - they're pretty tough!! Math sucks too. I have always been so terrible with numbers but my professor was great ( the second time around, that is. ) I believe that the core curriculum, at least for Comm. students, is a little too much. You need 4 english classes, 2 lab sciences, 2 foreign languages, math, two economics . . EW!

Hunter

Professors do know my name, the classes are small enough that if you want, they can certainly get to know you really easily. My favorite class is my history class, as we really are able to dissect history by using primary and secondary sources, and we discuss history with our professor. She treats us as equals who have just as much information to give to her, as she does to us. I really enjoy the personal connection, as I have been to my advisor's house for dinner and to get off campus.

Mike

The greatest thing about Quinnipiac is the tiny class sizes. Seriously, they are really small. I forget what they said the average class size is here, but all of my classes definitely have less than that. One of my classes only has 9 students in it. I my largest class probably has about 20. When coming here I honestly didn't expect to get much attention from professors, just because I figured that's how college is. Man, was I wrong. Within my first semester I already had my professors stopping me in the hallways just to chat and see how I was doing. How much people study varies by the major. Everyone in health sciences is pretty much parked in the library 24/7. Some of them are even REQUIRED to take 6 or 7 classes a semester while everyone else on campus is taking 5. There are a lot of communications students at this school. So pretty much where ever you go you will see a camera crew walking around filming for some assignment. Classes at this school can be pretty damn hard. While all my friends are taking 4 classes at a time I'm taking 5 or 6 just to be on track to graduate. The QU professors definitely expect a lot from their students. So you're going to have to work your ass off. But it will all be worth it, CT companies love QU grads. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting a job. Kids here are smart. Seriously, never before in my life had I heard kids who are drunk and high actually having intellectual conversations that make sense. If a kid is smoking weed, he doesn't just smoke weed. He will talk about the biological reasons that it is making him high.

Lane

Most of my professors are determined to learn who their students are, make sure that attendance is high, offer help, and even extra credit if the student is really trying. They make themselves available and are rapid in responding to e-mails.

Katie

Yes profs no my name. Fav class-anatomy. Least fav-neuroanatomy. Students study every day for these classes and yes, there are intellectual convos outside of class. Students are competitive in the PT program. Most unique-Anatomy Lab at Yale. I do spend time with professors outside of class. Quinnipiac's academic requirements should be more formatted to fit the major, not the 'core' curriculum.

Christina

Yes- i like all my PR classes- HATE language- Depends on the students. some study constantly others never- yes- depends on the students- yes- PR writing-PR is an amazing major to take at Quinnipiac. the professors have all been in the PR field for years before teaching- NO.- indifferent- getting a job.

Mike

Whenever I was younger I always had an irrational fear of going to a college class and sitting in an amphitheater of 150 students paying attention to a professor who would never know my name. Thankfully, this scenario doesn't exist at Quinnipiac University. Classes are generally very small, I think my biggest one last semester had around 30 kids and the smallest around 12. This, of course, makes for a more intimate and personal learning experience. Professors usually knew my name, except for a few adjunct Yale professors who didn't really put forth the effort. That's another thing that's great about Quinnipiac, its close proximity to Yale means that they share some faculty. A lot of the professors have real-world experience too. I took a Media Studies course from a woman who had worked with Viacom, the corporation that owns stations like MTV and Nickelodeon. It turns out that she was actually directly responsible for bringing the show "Pete & Pete" to television. There's also currently a few courses being taught by Greg Johnson, who was the executive producer for the successful independent film "The Squid & the Whale." They even had an on-campus showing of the film with a Q&A with him afterwards. However, with all schools, there's some professors who simply aren't as good at their craft as others. Some are extremely vague with their expectations, particularly in the English department, where the school takes a bizarre, liberal focus on the subject. "Reading against the grain" is heavily, heavily stressed, and some teachers simply don't know how to convey what they want from their students in an effective fashion.

Cameron

Do professors know your name? - Yes. Is class participation common? - no. The Air vents and unoiled desks have more interesting and frequent comments than the students. Do Quinnipiac students have intellectual conversations outside of class? - no. How do you feel about Quinnipiac 's academic requirements? - unfortunatly, the QU seminars are falling on mostly deaf and frustrated ears -good idea, but not for the intellectually mute. Is the education at Quinnipiac geared toward getting a job, or learning for its own sake? - it is the students, not the education which is geared this way.

Sallie

Depends on your major. Communications professors were really great.

Danielle

most of the professors i have do know my name and have made it a point to get to know everyone as well as make us get to know each other. my favorite class is my qu 201 class--we set the desks into a circle and have really good conversation about whatever we had read for the assignment. sometimes our professor will just ask us about our day, and i always leave that class in a better mood and have learned something new. i think overall, the students here are very smart and are extremely competitive, especially within the entry-level health science programs, which i have experienced first hand. right now, i am an occupation therapy major. im just finishing my liberal arts but next semester is alot of classes and clinicals so the workload will get drastically harder. i like the academic requirements of qu, but i do not like the mandatory qu classes they make us take. although i enjoy my 201 class alot--for people who already have a "set" curriculum, its really hard to fit in and usually get tricked into paying for more credits then they actually wanted in the first place.

Torry

Yep, professors know me. My major isn't on your enormous list.

katie

I love that professors know my name. If you ever need help you can email them or even IM them and they get back to you very fast. Most teachers love being here and want you to do well and learn. Chem was my least favorite class.

Casey

Yes, the teachers do make an effort to know you, but not all of them. My favorite class had to be the freshmen intro to business--SB101. I usually just study in my room. Class participation depends on the teacher. I've had classes where only the teacher talk and others where only the students talk. Yes, students do have intellectual conversation outside of class, we're not idiots. I wouldn't say that students are too competitive. The only bad thing about academics is that everyone is now required to take 3 QU lecture class which are absolute horse shit. They prove no purpose and make the students hate the administration more.

jackie

my professors do know my name my favorite class at the moment is "intellectual property" my least favorite class is "non-experimental methods of research in psych" some students study a lot, some don't at all class participation is common some students do have intellectual conversations outside of class students are somewhat competitive the most unique class i've taken is "human sexuality" my majors are legal studies and psychology. I like legal studies better, psychology has way too many requirements i do not spend time with professors outside of class i think quinnipiac's academic standards are good i think the education at quinnipiac can be toward getting a job or learning for its own sake, there is a good balance

Liz

classes are small and teachers know my name. nursing majors study A LOT and are definitly competitive

lauren

Professors are great. They are really attentive and caring. Best classes are the ones for my major, media studies. Least favorite are english and history, most professors are old and boring. Class participation is common, many classes are small and discussion based. The GPA minimums for honors for graduation are ridiculous.
