Quinnipiac University Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Justin

THIS IS A BAR SCHOOL. The campus is dead Thursdays and Saturdays because everyone is in New Haven. Fridays are the only chance for some on-campus rages.

Alex

i play ice hockey at quinnipiac. athletic events are usually popular. many people attend the boys hockey games.

Owen

the clubs do a really good job with arranging trips for thr weekends and activities at night

Gene

The university sponsors a lot of activities, but not a lot of people go to them. They have a lot of anti alcohol programs on the weekend, but the kids drink instead of going to them. Drinking is a part of just about every college campus, and there is no different at Quinnipiac. Many of the kids here are sheltered and dont know how to drink responsibly. the freshman dont know their limit before college, and get taken to the hospital more often than they should.

Kyle

i am a brother of Tau Kappa Epsilon and there is one other fraternity on campus (sigma phi epsilon) and 3 sororities (alpha chi omega, phi sigma sigma, and kappa alpha theta). greek life is not huge here. all of my roommates do not like greek life and have a great social life outside of it. i like to bounce back and forth between greek like and my outside friends. since the greek system is so small you sometimes just keep seeing the same people. you will make a lot of great friends joining which ever one you choose. there is also always something going on during the weekends. always a great party to go to and tons of stuff going on. new haven is fun on thursday and saturday nights. usually its hula hanks on thursday, campus drinking friday, toads on saturday.

Dylan

As a grad student I don't really socialize much. However, I am always invited to various events. At least 3-4 per month so there are plently of opportunities.

leis

Most popular groups are sports teams...Greek Life is not very big here, because of the ban on Frat and Soroity houses. Yes students leave their doors open. Athletic events are popular, however, males sports are more popular. Guest speakers tend to make out pretty well. Theatre? no idea. Closest friends through soccer, and rooming with them from freshman year. May weekend got cancelleddd!!! Cinco de mayo is big,

Royce

to be honest, a lot of the social scene on the weekends is off campus, but you can always find something to do on campus too

Sara

Some of the popular organizations at Quinnipiac are the film society, student government, and the student programming board. I'm involved with the student programming board that sets up events on the weekend that give people the option to do something fun without drinking such as movies, carnivals, or trips to Six Flags and white water rafting. Students in dorms do leave their doors open so walking in a hallway you can just go into any room an hang out. The first week of classes students just walk to each room and intoduce themselves, it's a great way to make friends! A lot of your closest friends are the people you are living with or that live in your hallway because you are with them all the time, but I have also met a lot of my closest friends from my classes and from parties. If I'm up at 2 am on a tuesday I'm probably either studying for a test or just on facebook talking to friends from home. People party a lot here so there is something always going on. Every thursday friday and saturday you there is a guarantee that a party is taking place on campus. Last weekend was the last weekend for people to party before studying for finals so I of course hung out with all my friends and had a great time. Theres a lot of things off campus to do. We are 20 minutes away from New Haven so you can go shopping there and go out for dinner and at night go to all the clubs there for college students.

Shannon

Thursday night is club night. All the girls wear the sluttiest outfits possible and participate in underage drinking on and off campus. It is ridiculous. However not every girl is like this. The guys love when the girls get dressed up and get drunk because then they have a better chance of sleeping with them. Im involved with Q30 which is a great organization. I get a large amount of on hands experience and I have met many wonderful people through the show. It is awesommeeee.

Danielle

there are so many options and you can find this out at the fair in the beginning of the year. as freshman many students stay on campus and then as they get older go into new haven to the clubs downtown. there are always events going on on campus and they are always open to students. you will always find someone who is like you and classes are where you can meet different people from your dorm. hockey is our most popular sporting event because our team is really good. people party on the weekend thursday, friday and saturday and occasional weekdays. frats/sororities are not big on campus, they are most used for community service based and since there are no houses allowed in CT they are not treated like they are at bigger schools.

Gene

Greek life on campus is fairly predominant. There are two frats and three sororities. There is also a lot of interest in Student Government, Student Planning Board and student media groups (radio station, TV station and the newspaper). There are not too many events on campus that are well attended other than hockey games and some keynote speakers that are usually pretty interesting. I would suggest that the first few days of freshman year you go around your dorm and campus meeting as many people you can, as these will most likely be your closest friends for the next four years. Most of the time, if you're up until 2 a.m. any night of the week you are either partying or studying. Both are very common. If you're not into the party scene, I would recommend either becoming very involved with an on campus group, learn to love studying and video games or attend another school as almost nothing can compete with partying from Wednesday to Sunday morning. There is a lot to do off campus if you're willing to venture into New Haven. Restaurants, clubs, bars, museums, etc. are all within 20 minutes in any direction.

Tate

people party 3-4 nights a week. sororities and fraternities are fun on campus but not a huge part of campus life. its a great way to get involved.

Ashley

I think there is a lot to do at Quinnipiac. There are always activies and events going on. There is a wide range of clubs and orgizations so that everyone can find one that fits them. I think the sports are a pretty big part here, but I wish there was a better fan base. I also wish Greek life was bigger here. There is also a lot to do in the Hamden/New Haven area.

Andy

There are some clubs on campus, but they are not popular and no one participates in their events unless there's free food. You meet most of your close friends in class or from your hallway/dorm. Some people party during the week, but everyone goes to New Haven on Thursday and Saturday nights, and then try to find something to do on Friday. There is some drinking on Wednesday nights. You have to have a fake i.d. to have fun though, as you can't get into the bars or clubs without one. There is nothing to do that doesn't involve drinking except going to sleep. The parties are whack, and are not big at all. Many consider 12 people sitting in a room drinking a "party." It is also a suitcase school, as many leave school on the Weekends to go visit their friends at other schools and experience a real party.

Nicole

Freshman year everyone becomes friends with the floor that you're on. Usually you're picking the roomates for the rest of your four years from this one dormroom. For me I had a couple of people from my town, or the town over that we became close pretty quickly. Partying usually consists of dorm room parties or going out to New Haven. There are only certain places that you can go if you're not 21 that will let you in anyway. There are also always a ton of campus parties going on, but they can get broken up quickly by security and a lot of students get written up for that type of stuff. One room had a blow up baby pool filled with water in their room, there have been kegs that were snuck on campus, ice louges, and there is always a game of flip cup or beer pong going on. Any card game ever created can also become a drinking game. Power hour before going out to new haven is pretty popular too. Many students pregame before going out to save money and to get the party started on the "drunk bus". Many students have puked ont he drunk bus, and that can result in a fine. You have to chose your seat wisely and always check for puke before sitting. As for not drinking, there is always a movie playing, or a game show type event on campus, but to be honest I've never been to one. They do always have good movies, like the last movie posted was Juno. It's never movies that no one would want to see. My club hosted an Italian Feast for a night where we had a DJ, and a ton of food for one night, and also we had this guy come who took your picture on a green screen type of thing and put you and your friends in Italy. Every organization has something like that going on every once in a while, which is always fun. There are also guests speakers like crazy, but again, I've never been interested to go, but depending on who it is Alumni Hall can be packed to over capacity. Fraternities and sororities are not big at all, we're not allowed to have houses because over a certain amount of people (really jsut girls) in a house is considered a brothel in connecticut. Anyone can date anyone on campus, unless you're in a fraternity or sorority, they get weird about that and you can only date each other. But a freshman can date a senior, sophomore, junior whatever. Most of the time you can't even tell what year they're in unless you ask.

Rebecca

Everyone goes out Thursday nights to the same place in downtown new Haven, Hula Hanks. Saturday night everyone goes to Toads in New Haven. Everyone has fake i.d.'s. Hockey is pretty big. There is a new sports arena, but the hype has died down since it's opening, not many people go anymore. If I am awake on a Tuesday morning at 2, I would most likely be studying or doing work. May Weekend used to happen, it was awesome and the best part of QY. People party every night, but typically thursday through sat. Frats and sororities are not big. Last weekend we held our own May weekend since they took it away.

Regina

Dorms are open places with open dorms. Frats/sororites are minor. There are options run by the student programming board on weekends if you dont want to drink, but most people drink in dorms or go to bars and clubs anyway

Brett

Many people drink, but barely anyone does drugs. There are student run programs to put on fun alternatives to drinking and partying. But, personally, I just like to relax with my friends and watch a movie or something most nights.

Steven

The student life on Quinnipiac is great when it comes to sponsered events. This year President Jimmy Carter came to talk about the nuclear missles crisis. As far as dorm life, I live in the smallest dorm at the school. It's a three person per room, which really should only fit two. There are constently people breaking ceiling tiles, or chairs in the study lounge. But i trust just about all of them. If i leave my room I'll leave the door open. drinking happens all the time, but the real drinking happens thursday, friday, saturday. frats and sororities are a joke. their not allowed to have a house on campus and their parties are broke. To get the animal house feel you need to get to know someone on a sports team. If your not looking to drink there are activities and events planned every weekend for people to hang out and do whatever. personally i've never attended one but they sound like they could be fun.

mary

The men's basketball and hockey teams are the most popular on campus. The men's hockey games have the most fans come to games. Not many students go to women's basketball games or ice hockey games. Theater is not popular either. I meet my closest friends from freshman year when we all lived in the same hall and also from being the manager of the women's basketball team I have meet alot of people. There are parties most weekends; however, they are never that big. The cancellation of may weekend put a damper on partying. Fraternities and sororities do many activities on campus and are extremely involved. Last weekend I didn't do much because it was morgue hours, so my roommates and I went off campus for dinner and a movie. Saturday night always involves drinking and going to Toads. If it doesn't we are usually on campus or going to New Haven to shop or going to the malls or movies.

Erin

The most popular sport is probably hockey. Other popular organizations are Student Government, Student Planning Board (plans events), Roots & Shoots (environmental), Quinnipiac Future Teachers Org, and the Honors Program (not open to everyone, though). There are quite a few guest lecturers each year, though not too many people take advantage of them, but they're great. I met my closest friends by just living with them in our dorm. People party Thursday through Saturday, but not everyone parties. Frats and sororities are definitely present, but they do not make up the majority of the student body and there are no frat/sorority houses on campus.

Jonathan

There are countless activities here on campus, from clubs, to organizations, and intramurals. Take your pick or be creative and start your own. They all look great on resumes, and provide you with extra knowledge and/or experience to apply to your education.

Alyss

weekends..clubs/dinner/room parties/ house parties-no real frats so that is tough. Movies/shopping common.. take the shuttle dating....its college so there isnt that much.. but many people have boyfriends/girlfriends from home or at other schools. People party thurs, fri, sat...if u are doing it other days then you are in the minority. People stay up late and chat watch movies No drinking- movies/shopping/ dinner/ SPB event or QU after dark.. defintely do-able

Charlie

Men's Hockey and Lacrosse teams are the most popular. Im involved with SAAC, which is student athlete advisory committe. We do community services activities. Yes students in our dorm leave our doors open. the men's sports specifically hockey and lacrosse are the most popular. Guest speakers are usually forced involved so people show. Theater: I have never been but i would say not a lot of involvement. I met my closest friends through athletics then branched off to who they knew. People party twice a week I would say. People are involved, good percentage for our campus i would say but they dont have houses so i dont think they are important, you are just paying to have friends. Last weekend I chilled in my room with my roomies and we watched some movies. Go to the activities on campus, go to a club down town in new haven.

Lorie

Social life- there's just not enough to say about it. But here's the overview: On campus- people mainly have small get togethers in their rooms. RA's usually don't bother you unless you're being WAY TOO LOUD. Which is usually never the case. Off campus- In Hamden: easiest place to get into is Jack's. Dick's and sidestreet depends on the night, but both places have been known to take away ID's. And don't ever try going to Aunt Chilada's with a fake because it'll be taken away for sure. Also upperclassmen will rat you out if they know you're underage because it's really supposed to be a legit bar. In New Haven: Toads (21+), Hula's (21+), Alchemy (18+), Oracle (18+), Hammer Jack's(18+)

Jamie

Nothing on campus to do. No live music(mostly due to the lack of support by the student body), or events at night. Students leave doors open first year, but after an established group of friends happens, its hard to change. I transfered here and all my friends(even three years later) are the freshmen of that year because students in my class didn't need another friend.

Andrea

Dorm life is something to get used to but is very fun where everyone can respect one another. Students always leave their door open so you can socialize with your entire floor. RA's hold events for their floor so that everyone can get to know each other better. There is no such thing at a 10 oclock bedtime and you can always find someone awake at 2 AM. Students watch TV together, listen to music, eat together, work out together, etc. I met my closest friends from my dorm. My best friends lived on either side of me my first year and then with me for my remaining years. The school is a great side for dating. There are enough different people to find and the school is a very safe atmosphere to meet people. I met my boyfriend my first year at QU as well. He lived a floor below me and we met through mutual friends. Other friends dated people we met in school and people we met outside of school. Fraternities and sororities are not that important. We have them but they are not super popular. I know other schools where frats and sororities are essential to their social life; at QU that is not the case. There are 2 frats and 3 sororities and there are many people involved. They hold events and I am sure they are fun to be a part of but they are not that important to social life on campus. If you don't want to drink on a Saturday night there are always activities that the Student Programming Board holds, like game night, movie night, etc. You can also always find students that don't feel like drinking and you can just hang out together, see a movie, go out to eat, etc. However, it is a college and there partying does happen. Everyone should socialize though and have fun. QU has busses that take students into New Haven on weekend nights. They buses have a route that they travel many times during the night so students can grab a ride into town and when they are done partying at the clubs, they can take the busses back. There is never a need to drive a car drunk! QU offers a shuttle service almost everywhere.

Melanie

There is always something to do on campus. There are almost always sports games to go to and the student programming board and QU after dark plan activities every friday and saturday night that go till about 1 or 2 in the morning. The shuttles from campus, which are free, also take you to Hamden and New Haven, where you can go shopping or to a restaurant with all of your friends. There are so many clubs that there is probably one you are interested in. There is really always something to do up here.

Casey

Most popular groups on campus: student programming board, QU after dark, greek organizations. I am in Alpha Chi Omega. The opportunities for social life and leadership are endless. Students in dorms leave their doors propped most of the time, but not open. Athletic events are moderately popular. Guest speakers are not. The dating scene among freshmen is mostly people hooking up, but other than that lets just say, there is way more of a selection for guys than girls. I met my closest friends in my hallway. If I'm awake at 2am on tuesday I'm doing work with girls in the hall. People party thursday, friday and saturday night (sometimes wed.). Our traditions are changing. Without may weekend, we are starting spirit week and so far, it doesn't fulfill any of the needs students have to party. May weekend somewhat lives on among the students. Last weekend I stayed on campus friday night to party and saturday went off campus to a house party. There are usually events planned on weekends that don't involve drinking. Off campus, we go to clubs and house parties or eat or go bowling.

Lauren

Most people go out to New Haven on Thursdays and Saturdays. Friday people usually stay on campus. If you are looking to go out any day of the week there is always something going on.

jen

The social life is nice there are those that party and those that don't but therte are always things to do

Christine

They have rather interesting guest speakers: Former President Jimmy Carter and Professor Takaki of University of California Berkeley. I am closest friends with my roommates, and my best friend here was from my first semester English class. There are only two fraternities and three sororities, it is not that big here, compared to many schools. I'm involved in Montage Art and Literary Magazine and Society of Professional Journalists. On a Saturday night, if you're not drinking, there are events sometimes set up by the Student Progroamming Board...or you can just hang out and watch a movie in your room. Most kids go to bars in New Haven. I just wish there were more parties on campus.

Erica

Quinnipiac has a really good hockey team, and the basketball team is getting good too! The dorms are really fun, and QUAfterDark always has some programs going on. If you are not into school sponsored programs, you are only a quick shuttle ride away from the nightlife of New Haven. Greek life isn't huge, but its fun if it is something you want to be involved in!

Caitlin

There are 70 student organizations, so people can find pretty much anything they want. A new sports arena for ice hockey and basketball was built in 2007 so people go there for games. If you have your car, you still can't drive there so it is a hassle sometimes to take shuttles to the games.

Keith

NONE

Andrew

So many options it is hard to choose what you want to do. QU literally offers anything you could posisbly want to get involved in and all programs are run extremly well to.

Mike

In IRMA WEST SIDE (my freshman dorm) everyone leaves there doors open. In Commons and Ledges everyones dorms seem to be closted. Atheltic evens are some what popular especially the hockey team. If I am awake at 2am on tuesday I am studying or finishing some kind of work. People party on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Fraternaties and sororities are a joke...they dont even have houses.

Jenna

There is always something going on on campus. Students are always willing to participate in activites and do the campus run programs that dont involve drinking and partying.

Mike

QU does have fraternities and sororities on campus that are popular for some students. They don't dominate student life, but they are available for students to get involved with. They actually don't have any houses on or off campus, so the typical "college party" that you see in movies doesn't really happen, but don't think we get bored. At night the parties usually happen Thursday through Saturday night. It's not crazy on the weekdays. There's always something happening on the weekends for students either on or off campus and the administration is really good with setting up different activities for students to get involved with that don't involve drinking including concerts, comedians, and stuff that gives away free food, and that's always a huge bonus. New Haven provides a good nightlife for students to go and hang out if they don't feel like chillin in the dorms, but if you like chillin in the dorms then that is always happening too. Also there are plently of clubs and organizations geared towards each major on campus and that always helps out when it comes to looking for a job. There's over 70 clubs and organizations available for students to get involved in. It's a very relaxed environment around the dorms. Many students will leave their doors open to other students during the day.

Brett

parties on campus, but no houses to actually party in, we go out to new haven a lot, some people party all week

Meghan

Everyone seems to be friendly, people will say hi to you in the hall or in the bathroom. Everyone hangs out in the quad when it's nice out and there is always a ton of people around. Organizations are pretty big and Sororities and Fraternaties are bigger than college board makes them out to be. The Sporting events are the most popular event on campus. Especially ice hockey. There are always activities on campus (and free stuff!) and guest speakers, comedians, and magicians, etc. People are in the library til late every night or out in the study lounge. A lot of people go out to the New Haven clubs on Thursdays and Fridays and the weekends seem to be one big party. But if you do not drink, there is still plenty of other things to do- except eat b/c the cafe closes at 6 on weekends and the Rat food is questionable.

Stephanie

Every week students get an email about the events going on during the week. There is always something to do that is organized by the school or one of the organizations on campus. There are parties at QU just like at every other school, but they rarely get out of hand. Since the school is right near New Haven, which has a huge night-life scene, a lot of students frequent the clubs or bars on the weekends. New Haven also has a lot of good shopping and dining options. The shuttle on campus runs to and from Hamden and New Haven on a daily basis about once every hour from early in the morning to very late.

Katrina

There is a lot of greek life on campus, considering how small we are. But, like any small campus there really isn't a lot of clique-i-ness if you are not greek. Quinnipiac has tons of professional clubs and opportunities to be in different clubs are growing all the time. My favorite group was my greek orginization Alpha Phi Omega, which is a community service fraternity. It's very reminiscent of scouting and national honor society. As for the one on campus, people are very friendly. If the freshman dorms people leave their doors open all the time and in every suite i lived in, you really only closed your door at bedtime and to get changed. If you are a girl you might find the dating scene rather slim... we out number the boys in what feels like 2:1... if you are a guy the opposite holds true. Like any small town though it turns into a very small world... be careful your you'll end up dating your ex's freshman roommate! Saturday nights if you aren't looking to drink there are usually a TON of events. QUAD (QU after dark) frequently has fun activities from 8pm - 2am, including crafts, BINGO (with sweet prizes), movies and more. The huge drinking night on campus is thursday and people usually end up taking what we refer to as the drunk bus into new haven to go clubbing. Athletic Events are not that popular. I don't actually really know anyone that attends, excepting for hockey which is our BIG sport. If i'm awake at 2am on tuesday, i'd most likely be online iming my friends! The whole campus is wireless and we pretty much all live on the internet.

Kelsey

There are so many groups on campus I couldn't even guess which are the most popular. Almost anything you can think of has a group here on campus. Normally if you are awake in the middle of the night on a weeknight you are either at the library or hanging out in your room, unless it's a Thursday or Friday night when you normally head into New Haven. Frats and Sororities are not very important on campus since there is no Greek housing however there are 3 Sor. and 2 Frat. that are available to join on campus. One group that keeps many people away from drinking on weekends is QU After Dark, they always have fun programs like Karaoke or Ping Pong tourneys or anything.

Zach

Frats and Sororities make up 4 {4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body, they are prevelant but not over whelming. Athletic events are over rated here, with little attendance across the board. Dorm rooms are left open a lot. 2 am on a Tuesday we are drinking or watching tv. People drink daily, and are drunk 3 or 4 days. Mostly everything revolves around drinking. Off campus is eating, dancing, drinking and Wal Mart.

Dana

QU brings in really great guest speakers, and really diverse ones too. I've met people in my hallway or through friends of friends. Also, I have met people in classes but its harder to move from just classmates to friends outside of class that way. People party all the time here. Its a huge party school but there are activies you can go to and people to hang with if you dont want to party that night or in general.

Amanda

Students in dorms leave their doors open if they are home. there have been recent dorm thefts on campus (ipods, computers, etc.) People tend to be careless with their valuables. The most popular student organizations are student government association (SGA), QU after dark (movies, etc.) Athletic events are very popular, and these students get a lot of stuff for free. There are very frequent guest speakers, hypnotists, psychics, plays. There are a lot of nice guys but there are also a lot of dirt bags. It is hard to go out if you are not single to get a guy to talk to you once you tell him you have a boyfriend. My closest friends were my freshman roomates and peopele in a lot of my classes. Partying is common, especially on thursday nights (lots of poeple go to New Haven, there is a shuttle), friday, and saturday. There are quiet hours in the dorms during the weeks and there is not too much loud partying. During the weekend there is a lot of partying on campus, and you don't have to go somewhere to have fun. There are local bars if you don't want to go all the way to New Haven. Frats/sororities aren't huge, there is one coed service frat, two sororities, and one fraternity that are pretty popular. Sports parties are popular too. Aside frmo drinking the university has tons of activities that are raelly great. Nearest mall is about 30 minutes away but there is a good amount of shopping in town that you can take the shuttle too. Off campus parking is available for sophmores (freshman cannot have cars), juniors can park on campus, and seniors must commute (there is no senior housing). The housing is a "lottery" and it sucks, but the housing in general is suite style and really nice.

Ryan

Things are getting better, but it still seems like there is either heavy drinking or none at all. The late-night activities on weekends are populated by small groups of friends who are anti-drinking. Small greek life, 2 of each, getting more popular but still not greek housing. Very clique-y.

Brittany

Overall the social life is good other than when we had T-pain. There is an attempt at having events to help prevent drinking but the majority of the student body goes to clubs in new haven on the weekends, which is very easy to access by the shuttle service.
