What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Jess

Sunday through wednesday campus is pretty quiet, but thursday through saturday if you want to find a party you wont have to look too far. Thursday and Saturday night are big nights for going out to the bars and clubs and friday students mostly party on campus. As said earlier, it is not the most friendly campus, but once a social group is formed you mostly hang out with those people. There are 3 sororities and 2 frats...but a pretty small percentage of students are greek. There are no official greek houses on campus but there are areas and certain residence halls where a large amount of greeks live. Quinnipiac used to have an annual "may weekend" where they had entertainment and things for students to do, but they did away with that last year so they have concerts and enterainment all through the school year instead.

Brett

There's a club for everyone at Quinnipiac, and it's very easy to get involved. You can even start your own club. I was very active in the student-run TV station. Emphasis on student-run. Students produce all the shows, and if you have an idea for a new show, it's easy to start. The big athletic events are the hockey games, and with the new athletic center, it's a nice venue to watch games in! You can always find an on-campus party, and on the weekend, a lot of students go into nearby New Haven. There's a lot to do there, whether you prefer a club, a bar, or just a nice restaurant or cafe.

Cassie

Intramurals are very popular. Outside of that, SPB is a club freshman join to get involved and then people typically drop out unless they become a department manager. People party very often. Typically thursday nights are New Haven club nights. Friday nights are Aunt Chilada nights. Saturdays are Toad's nights. Wednesday night is senior night at Side Street. There are two frats and three sororities. I have friends in them but you don't need to join to make friends.

Quinnipiac has a wide variety of student clubs and organizations on campus. If you have a hobby, interest, or heritage- you will find a group that shares the same passion! I am invovled in many diversity organizations on campus, such as SHADEs (Students Helping Advocate Diversity Education). We bring diversity based programs to the Quinnipiac Campus to help educate students on different cultures around the world. We have had a variety of speakers, performances, movies, food events, and conferences to urge QU students to step out of their comfort zones, learn about themselves, and to learn about others. These clubs and organizations foster an atmosphere of school spirit and students are able to find others who share the same interests and passions. Many of my closest friends at Quinnipiac are those people I met in the organizations I am a member of. The organizations help to shape the campus social life, but also leave a lasting impact on your own social life!

Ally

Students here do leave their doors open, and often have movie parties or parties watching their favorite show together, do homework together or just hang out. Frats/sororities are not that huge here, there are 3 sororities and 2 fraternities. I mentioned some of these other things in other boxes above!

Mike

I would say that Greek Life is very popular hear, along with student government, and student media and art groups. I personally am involved with the student radio station WQAQ and also Residential Life as a Resident Assistant. This year I am an RA in a freshman residence hall and next year I will be moving up to upperclassman. I tell my residents to think about having "an open door policy" which basically says to have your door open as much you can and be inviting to everyone so we can start building our sense of community. Athletic game are very very very popular here. Especially Men's Ice Hockey. Students get free tickets, but they are gone extremely fast and most games are packed. There are many guest speakers on campus every year and talk about a wide range of topics and issues. Dating scene, well, I see it just like I bet most other schools. Yea QU is 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} female and 40{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} male, so sure I guess us guys have more of an advantage and I would say it's pretty easy to meet a wide variety of people. Like I said before being involved can be beneficial in numerous ways. For me, becoming very involved on campus is exactly how I met my best friends and it can also lead you to potential significant others. Also it just helps you build up your networking skills and you can meet lots of people through your friends that you hang out with. When it comes to partying here, it pretty much happens nearly every week Thursday through Saturday, but there are organizations that put on programs and events every single weekend for students to have fun without needing to drink.

Amanda

I believe that there are many groups/organizations on campus, but some of the most popular are SGA (Student Government), SPB (Student Programming Board), and the Crazy Bobcats. I am involved with the Pep Band on campus and I am actually the President. I believe that there isn't enough recognition for our organization and that there isn't enough participation either. I love all of the members, but I am hoping that we can start to grow and expand. I believe that most students leave their doors open in their dorms as freshmen because they want to get to know each other and meet new people. But, once you move up most people leave their doors closed. I believe that the athletic events are very popular to go to, but only if they are men's games. Students don't support the women's sports teams as well as the mens. Guest speakers are only popular if people are made to go to them most of the time. Theater events seem to be pretty popular on campus, though I don't know how popular they really are. I believe that many girls come to school with boyfriends because they know that there are less guys than girls on the campus. I met all of my close friends through all of the organizations that I am involved with and I would highly encourage anyone who is going to college to participate in organizations that mean something to them and then they will meet people they enjoy being around. If I am awake at 2am on ANY night then it is most likely because I am studying for my classes. I don't believe that fraternities/sororities are that important, but I do believe that they are a great thing to be a part of. I love being in my sorority (Kappa Alpha Theta) and I would never change my experience for the world. I absolutely love all of my sisters and I am so glad that I am a part of this big family. Last weekend was actually vacation, but generally on a weekend if the Pep Band doesn't have a game then I am usually relaxing in my room or out to dinner with a friend. There are many events to do on the campus that don't involve alcohol at all and groups like SPB and QUAD program these events. If I go off campus it's to visit my boyfriend or hang out with my friends at the movies or to go out to dinner.

Amanda

I have been a member of the QU Kickline since i was a Sophomore. We perform at half time for womens and mens basketball games and also at select events on campus. We have only been established for maybe the last 7-8 years. We have competed and for the past 2 years have brought home a first place trophy. I don't wanna brag but alot of people come just to see us dance. We are a very entertaining bunch! Frats/Sororities are not that big at quinnipiac. We have them, but they are not the center of our university. Now that we have the new athletic arena, athletic events are slowly getting more popular. Before this year we just had a regular gym and no one went to games. The arena not only livened our school spirit but also involved the community as well. Its SOOO easy to meet people at QU. Doors are always open and people are always willing to meet new people. I met my current roommates freshman year because we lived in the same hallway.

Erin

I love being a part of the paper at school, and having an editor position! Its a great group of people, and also a lot of work. We have been through so much together but having them around enhances my college experience without a doubt. If you're awake at 2am on a Tuesday, you are either studying or drunk. People party at Quinnipiac 3-4 nights a week. If you don't drink - you can go dancing, bowling, to the movies . . there is also a fantastic group on campus called QUAD . . standing for Quinnipiac After Dark. They plan cool game nights, shows, guests, and free food for the weekends. Definately make it a point to go to some of the events! Hey, its free!

Mike

It is kind of hard to leave your door open here. We have those fancy card reader doors. So unless they are being held open by something they will just shut and lock. Most of the time kids doors are open and you can walk into pretty much any room and start a conversation with anyone.

Lane

Athletic events get the most fans, especially hockey. Any other on campus events: guest speakers or theater programs are usually only attended by students who have a relative assignment. My dorm is open, the doors are always open, and people are walking around (or even sitting in) the hallway or study lounge. Greek life is here, but not huge. They do a lot on campus, but they don't have a strong influence over social activities.

Katie

Most popular organizations-Greek life, athletics. I'm involved in Greek life, and I love every second of it. Everyone is so friendly and enjoys the bond that we all share. Most friendly and open students leave their doors open. Hockey games are very popular, but guest speakers and theater may not be so popular. The dating scene is small, as most of the girls have boyfriends from home or do not want to have a relationship and there is only a small amount of guys. I met my closest friends freshman year through living close to them. If i'm awake at 2am on Tues, I'm studying. People party usually Thursday-Saturday with an occasional Tuesday or other weeknight thrown in. Fraternities/Sororities are very important to me. Last weekend, i studied. Study on weekend nights :(. Off campus I see senior friends, sometimes go to house parties and go shopping and out to eat.

Christina

Greek Life/SGA/SPB/Orientation Leaders- N/A- yes- popular/not popular/semi popular- N/A- Greek life- hanging out with friends or doing work- greek week, spirit week, alumni carnival- OFTEN almost every day- depends how involved you want to be in them- went to bars in New Haven and parties on campus- SPB creates non drinking events for weekends- eat, drink, movies, shop, etc.

Mike

My personal favorite activity on campus is the student run radio station, WQAQ. As mentioned before, I'm more into music than anything, so for me it was a natural fit. The kids at WQAQ are very warm and accepting to anyone they can have a friendly conversation with, and the organization itself is a lot of fun. Students can have their own radio show as early as their first semester on campus, and the station is almost always open to hang out in. I'd say I spend more time in the radio station than I do in my actual room. There's always someone around and those who put forth the effort to come to meetings and show up and hang out are actually recognized and accepted by the upperclassmen. It's more of a family than anything, and I'm really proud to be a part of it. As for other activities...there's a saying that "you can't spell liquor without QU." I'll let that speak for itself. On weekends there's always parties, but they're pretty avoidable. If you don't feel like drinking, there's usually events put on by the Student Programming Board, including playing movies in Buckman Theater that usually aren't out on DVD yet and guest entertainers. There's also 3 concerts put on each year: 2 by SPB, and one by WQAQ. This year we had Cartel and the Starting Line in the fall; Jack's Mannequin, T-Pain, and Zox in the Spring; and coming up we have Minus the Bear, Kevin Devine, and Paulson. The last of the three is being put on by WQAQ, and each year they hold a Battle of the Bands, the winner of which gets to open up the show. Every Thursday night there's also an Open Mic in the Bobcat Den cafeteria, and sometimes student bands will perform full electric sets. This year there's also a Musician's club being put together to give student bands even more opportunities to perform as well as the equipment to do it with.

Sallie

If you're not a fan of the bar or club scene on the weekends, the school is not for you.

Danielle

the most popular organizations on campus is definitely greek life. alot of people involved in greek life are also RAs, tour guides and members of honor societies contour to thier major. a group i am involved with is my sorority. its made me push myself academically and has definitely opened many doors for me in means of leadership. athletic events are only popular if its a hockey game, and even more popular if we are playing an ivy game. speakers are almost never popular, the only time i ever saw alot of interest in one was when president carter came to speak. i met my closest friends through either my sorority or i roomed with them. if im awake at 2am on a tuesday--im either doing hw or procrastiating doing my homework in my dorm room. traditions in this school that ive been exposed to are may weekend and the spring concert. within my organization, is greek week. people party alot on this campus on the weekends, but i think the majority of students take thier schoolwork seriously enough where they wont go out if they have a huge test or something of that nature. greek life is getting bigger on this campus, and its definitely being noticed by alot more people, especially the administration. if your not going to drink, there are events and movies to go do that are set up by the programming board. off campus..ill usually go out to eat, shopping or if its a weekend, ill go into new haven.

Torry

Community Action Project, Crazy Bobcats, sororities and fraternities. Syudent Programming Board, QU After Dark Doors are mainly closed. Hockey games are popular, other sports are not. People don't go to guest speakers unless required for a class, for the most part.

katie

Mens hockey games!!!!! They are a must. QU is very close to many other colleges (Yale, Albertus Magnus, SCSU, Sacred Heart ect..) and when you go into New Haven you can find many students from all schools there. There are def places to go and party or you can stay on campus. Most RA's are not strict with music and they know when you're partying..but if they don't see anything or it's not quiet hours you prob won't get into trouble.

Casey

Greek life is popular and is on the rise. I myself am in a greek organization. Students in the dorms leave their doors open all the time. Hockey and basketball are huge here, especially with the new arena. It's ridiculous that May Weekend has been canceled. There are people partying every night of the week. It's your choice whether to participate or not.

jackie

greek life is the most popular im in phi sigma sigma. it involves doing a lot of club type stuff all in one and enables you to meet a lot of people. students leave their doors open at the beginning of freshman year, after that not much. hockey games are popular, other sports not so much. guest speakers are not popular unless they are really famous. theater is very small. most people are in relationships with other qu students or students at other schools. i met my closest friends from living with them. if i'm awake at 2am on a tuesday I'm either doing homework or at a sorority event may weekend used to happen every year but they took it away. there is an annual holiday dinner every fall. people party every weekend. fraternities and sorority members make up 1{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the QU campus. last weekend I hung out with friends on campus and then visited another school. SPB and QUAD put on events on saturday night for students who do not drink. go out to eat, shopping, movies

Liz

most popular organizations are the sororities and fraternities

Jess

There are a few malls within driving distance and lots of restaraunts and other fun places to go.

1. The hockey team, baseball team, Dance Company, Kickline, Rugby, Orientation Leaders, Greek Life 2. When I was an orientation leader it was the greatest thing ever. Then our amazing adviser left and orientation went down the tubes. Greek life is great but would be better if the administration didn't hate us for no reason seeing as we can't do anything/allowed to do anything any way. 3. Yes, mostly everyone does. 4. Only hockey games are popular... men's ones. 5. I met my closest friends through Greek Life. 6. I'm talking to my roommates. 7. Quinnipiac decided to eliminate all of it's traditions because it's administration tries to take the fun out of everything... it is succeeding. 8. You could find a party every night of the week if you wanted to. 9. Fraternities & Sororities are important to those who are in them, otherwise, people could care less. 10. Went to a hockey game and two off campus parties. 11. There is a lot to do on a Saturday night that does not involve drinking. Every Friday and Saturday the Student Programming Board has something planned as well as Quinnipiac University After Dark. Events run until 1AM or something like that. There really is always something to do. 12. You can go into New Haven and go to the clubs or shopping. There are a lot of places to eat around Hamden as well as places to shop. There are three malls within close vicinity as well as many other colleges.

SPB is big here, QU After dark is also up there. they give all the on campus student activities on friday and saturday nights. (Also sometimes movies on sundays). Greek life is HUGE here at QU (too big if you ask me). Theater is small (sadly) guest speakers and minimal. Dating is the same here as everywhere else. usually meet at a bar or party, hook up and go from there. I met my closest friends at a party on campus. I am a social buterfuly that will say hi to anyone who walks by haha. If I am up at 2am on a Tuesday I am studying. Athletic events are growing mainly b/c of the new arena. Every year there are concerts, may weekend (well not anymore :(), Mr. Quinnipiac, greek formals, etc. QU is a big party school, Wed there is senior night at side street, Thursday night is a big new haven night, Friday night is either dorm parties or aunt chiladas and saturday nights its toads. On Saturday if you dont want to drink SPB and QUAD ALWAYS have something going on on campus. Greek life, like I said is HUGE here, I personally do not believe in it, but it is very popular. Last weekend I went to the hockey game, then a party on campus, saturday I went to a friends apartment, and sunday I played Super Mario Brothers 3 all day and watched the Oscars (I usually work, but I had the weekend off). Off campus I usually go to a friends apartment, movies in North Haven, out to dinner on Whitney etc.

Stephanie

I'm in a sorority on campus, which is pretty different from sororities on other campuses. We don't have a sorority house so we do all of our events on campus, we don't haze, and we spend the majority of our time doing philanthropic work. It's probably one of the best things I've ever done in my entire life. I always leave my door open in my dorm, I did the same last year. Most people love it when you stop by, either on your way to class or just because you're bored. A lot of people go to hockey games, we have an awesome new stadium where we have our hockey and basketball games. I was never really a sports person but the school spirit is intoxicating, so it really is a lot of fun to go and watch a game. People party on campus every weekend, but more often they go into New Haven and go to the clubs there. Our school has shuttles that take people into New Haven, so no one has to worry about getting a taxi or driving home at night. Every weekend our campus has QUAD events, which are events that our programming board puts on for people who don't drink. They'll have trips to the movies, local bowling alleys, they'll put on socials, play movies in Alumni Hall, have free massages, all kinds of fun stuff.

Jennifer

The most popular groups I would have to say are SGA and then fraternities and sororities seem to be getting more popular on campus as each year goes by. The most popular teams is definately the hockey team; they get the most press and the most participation at their games from the student body. I met my friends freshmen year in my hall, through my activities and other things i am in involved with. 2am on a Tuesday I am probably doing homework. I go out some weekends usually only one night either friday or saturday.

Samantha

The bookstore here sells Quinnipiac football shirts that say “undefeated since 1929,” a not so amazing feat when you learn that we don’t have a football team so we have never played a game to lose. However, even the mention of the word hockey can send students into a frenzy. Our hockey team is a member of the ECAC hockey league. Friday and Saturday night games at our brand new athletic center are crazy as the school comes out in gold and blue going nuts for our team. Most weekends (which do include thirsty Thursday) students will drink in dorm rooms, or wait on a long line for a ride on the shuttle service provided by the school into New Haven, where there are a number of clubs and bars students enjoy hanging out at. Fraternities and sororities do not have housing and really aren’t as popular as they are at other school, yet many students do rush and take part in them. Quinnipiac has over 70 clubs including the Student Programming Board (SPB) and Quinnipiac University After Dark (QUAD), both of these organizations program activities for students who do not want to drink on the weekend such as comedians, movies, game shows, concerts, and more. During the week other activities take place, such as the Student Government's spirit week, and hall wars. When you walk around the hallways in the dorms, most rooms have their doors propped wide open and are making good use of the extra (uncomfortable) wooden desk chair provided with the room. My closest friend here is one of the three roommates I was placed with my freshmen year. I have made other friends from classes, and organizations I am a part of, but mostly from my hallway. Everyone finds their niche; sometimes it’s in the most unexpected people and places.

Jo

The most popular organizations on campus are the Orientation Leaders, Student Programming Board, and the sororities and fraternities. The school teams that are the most popular are the baseball, hockey, and lacrosse team. I am in involved in Alpha Chi Omega one of the sororities on campus. Every year there is a great interest within Freshman and Sophomore girls on campus to come out to recruitment and join one of the three sororities on campus. The numbers of girls who come out for sororities has gone up a lot since I came to Quinnipiac. Depending on the dorm, students leave their dorms open. There is usually a sense of trust amongst the various students at Quinnipiac. Hockey games are very popular at Quinnipiac and generally bring out the biggest crowds of students. Guest Speakers are not very popular however do have usually high levels of attendance because students are made to go for class. This is also true for the plays at Quinnipiac. The theater program is small but growing and is gathering support from the student body as well. Most guys say they come to Quinnipiac for the abundance of girls they thought they would find freshman year and are disappointed to find that most girls come with a boyfriend from home. However, many students throughout their four years here do find a boyfriend or girlfriend from the school but because it is not a very big campus, it is hard to date more than a few different guys/girls because ultimately they will end up knowing each other and can become uncomfortable. I met my closest friends freshman year, they were my hallmates in my dorm, and have been my roommates for four years since. The girls in my sorority are also very close to me. If I am awake late nite on a Tuesday I am probably studying or doing homework. The traditions of QU are Midnight Madness, which is a showcase of the different sports teams and spirit groups and May Weekend, which was cancelled last year. People usually party every weekend from Thursday-Saturday unless it is finals weekend. Sororities and Fraternities have been growing at a consistant level since I have come to QU. Last weekend I went out to bars as a senior and most other seniors did too. For undergrads who are under 21 and live on campus parties are usually on campus, although there are also bars in New Haven that are 18 plus on Thursday nights and others go out in New Haven on Saturdays with fake ids. If someone does not drink, there are a lot of events to go to such as sports games and school sponsored club events by SPB (Student Programming Board) such as comedians and psychics, as well as the group QUAD (QU After Dark) which is a club primarily geared towards students who do not wish to drink on weekend nights but want some sort of other socializing. They often go out to eat, bowling, watch movies, etc. Off campus involves going out to eat in New Haven, shopping and the movie theaters.

Steve

SGA and SPB are somewhat popular... Greek Life is pretty much non-existant, with 7 or 8 percent... intramural sports are very popular.. I am involved with the school newspaper. Students don't leave their dorm rooms... Many people keep to themselves, and their are many cliques on campus. Athletic events such as Men's Hockey and Men's Basketball (sometimes) are pretty popular. A recent hockey game against Yale was sold out at 4400+ people attending. Everything else is dead. Guest Speaker Jimmy Carter was huge. Theater isn't very popular, but I have a friend who is in it so I try to support him when he has plays. There isn't much dating within students as far as I've seen... there are people who hook up, but I would think that those in relationships are upperclassmen and seniors. I met my best group of friends last year in our apartment/dorm for transfer students. There used to be May Weekend every year, but that has been cancelled indefinitely. People party ALOT from my experiences. Weekends start on Thursdays, which is the night to go to New Haven. Fridays are usually dorm and off campus nights, followed by Sat. Nights at Toads in NH. But there is definitely alot of partiers here, with the exception of Health Science majors. Fraternities/Sororities are pretty much unimportant to a large part of the student body. They don't have houses. Last weekend I was sick but I had a friend come up from home on Friday night and we hung out in several dorms the whole night. Saturday night was the same The school sponsors events on campus after dark called "QU After Dark", but to my knowledge, these are largely unattended. Movies can be seen in Buckman Theatre. Off campus there is much to do. There are bars and restaurants all along Whiteny Ave, and New Haven is def. a hotspot for Thursday nights. Students take the shuttle which take them almost directly to popular locations. There is alot to do in New Haven.
