What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kristina

I have gained wisdom through the years and from my prior completion of two degrees. If I could go back and have a sit-down, heart-to-heart talk with my high school self, I would stress commitment and passion. When I went to the University of Minnesota in 1999 after graduating high school, my mind was focused on entering the real world as an independent adult. There was so much excitement in this life I was about to explore! Being 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} commited to school was not my top priority, and this is why I wish I could go back in time and give myself some well-needed counseling. I graduated with my B.A. in Psychology with a 3.39 GPA in 2003. Years later in 2011, I graduated from Argosy University with my Associates in Medical Lab Technology with a 3.96 GPA! This shows the difference in my level of commitment to mastering my area of study. In January 2015 I will be entering my third quarter at Rasmussen with a current 4.0 GPA. My goal is to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout my degree. Commitment and passion enable a person for great success!

If I could go back to High School and give myself any advice it would be to fight harder, and explore all options. Take advantage of every opportunity. Truly believe in who you are and strive for that potential that you know you have. Overcome any obstacle that may be thrown at you. Life gives you challenges for a reason, you will be something one day, you will make a difference. I was placed in classes based on a test that was given to me in elementary school, and placed into special education classes. I do not feel that I was tested properly and my parents did not know any better they listen to the ones that were supposed to teach me. I was not prepared for college at all, and I failed the first try, but I went back. Now I have been trying to prove that I am better than that, and make something more of myself and prove to myself I am smart and I have the potential it takes to succeed!

If I were able to go back in time to talk to myself as a high school senior, I would have given myself the advice to do a lot of researc on successful careers and the growth rate of the careers. Additionally, I would have advised myself to start college immediately instead of wasting time. Had I known the resources made available to all students from the area of career advising to financial aid assistance, I would have not wasted so much time. Today, many colleges have financial aid assistants that help you locate all the grant and scholarship monies available for you to apply. Lastly, I would have advised myself on how important it is to have a succesfull career and to start young while I can so I can look forward to a plentiful retirement sooner rather than later in life.

I would tell myself to start college taking as many courses as I could succesfully handle. A student who plans to go part time all the way through their bachelor degree might have problems with financial aid down the line. Waiting until you have been in school part time for a while to figure this out could create a problem. It would be easier to take more classes when you first start college compared to taking more classes once you start classes towards your bachelor. The reason for this is because bachelor level classes are much more in depth and much more work. It would be a good idea to start college with as many credits as you can handle, and then once you reach the point of your bachelor level classes you could easily take a few less credits per quarter and still graduate on time with no financial aid problems. If you are a student who wants to complete their bachelor degree part time, this bit of information would be very valuable.

If I could go back in time to give myself advice about college life I would tell myself that it would be hard but keep at it. Give yourself time to study and time to do your homework. Never ever let your homework pile up on you. Never be afraid to ask you peers or teachers for help.
