What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Donald

I think Frisbee is pretty big. Probably the anime and videogame clubs as well, I assume. I'm involved in a group that gets drunk a lot. We blast music too loud and make fun of people while failing miserably at darts and random Wii games. Probably the best student group on campus, or at least damn near the top. My dorm was fucking miserable, but I hear most of them aren't too bad. Athletic events and speakers are usually quite a big hit. The dating scene really ain't too bad, a big of a surprise as that may be. I met the majority of my friends through the consumption of massive amounts of alcoholic beverages, of course. 2 AM on Tuesday I'm either watching movies or playing videogames. None worth mentioning. Parties seem pretty frequent. Frats and Sororities act like they're a big deal, but I don't think too many people really take them seriously. Last weekend I got ridiculously drunk and sucked at darts. Also played computer games. Uh... sleep? Go bowling.

Student Government is probably the most prominent organization on campus, because they are visible and make themselves known, but there are a million other groups that I can't even pretend to know. I'm personally involved with SAAC - the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. We are representatives from RIT's sports teams who organize community activities and try to promote interactivity between athletes and non-athletes, as well as "school spirit" at sporting events. Besides this group, I'm part of a couple others, and I also hold two jobs on campus. It helps you really get to know the campus and meet so many different people. Dorms are interesting - the floors can be crazy or quiet. Freshman year, we never left our door shut and hardly ever even locked it (not that I would recommend this), but that was how close our whole floor was. CAB - the College Activities Board, usually holds events throughout the weekend, including Thursday night's cinema night, Friday's "Friday Night in the Ritz", which is usually some kind of open-mic night or other activity. "Thirsty Thursday" is tradition, and parties also of course go on during Friday and Saturday nights. There are pretty strict guidelines about alcohol in the dorms, but it is allowed in apartments as long as you're of age - of course these guidelines are always stretched by students. There are some sweet places to go downtown for dancing, as well as bars in the area for hanging out. Drinking isn't everything though - there are plenty of places to go for coffee, bowling, video games, etc. Oh, and the dollar theatre is always a good choice.

I don't know about the most popular clubs/groups on campus, I prefer spending my time with friends at the dorms. My hallway almost always leaves our doors open. Athletic events aren't very popular here, unless someone knows one of the team members. Guest speakers are ignored- we don't get anyone interesting or exciting, in my opinion. I don't care for or partake in the 'dating scene'. I did not meet my closest friends at RIT. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I'm probably hanging around the hallway with other floormates, joking around and having fun. People don't party on my floor, as we're the alcohol/substance-free floor. I don't like fraternities or sororities, and I have noticed that most students don't like them either. They're not important here, to me at least. I studied for finals last weekend. I can play videogames with fellow floormates, go to a movie, watch dildo infomercials with a large group of floormates and laugh at the ridiculous products put on sale. Off campus, you can go to Walmart, Barnes & Noble, to the movies, or go out to eat. I don't get off campus much, and I prefer it that way.

Anime club, RITGA, and no voice zone are really popular. I'm only involved in the first two. Anime has two showings a week and hosts an anime convention in the spring. RITGA is a friendly group of glbtqqaa students aimed at socializing (at the moment), there's movie and game nights, and they hold special events on campus sometimes. Yes, most dorms have an open door policy and most floormates know eachother. Hockey games are popular, and basketball is growing in popularity. Haven't yet gone to a guest speaker. As far as the dating scene goes, I can only go into the rainbow spectrum, but there's a lot of options because of the uniqueness of the people at RIT. Also, you can always head to UofR or the city of Rochester and try to pick up a date there if you know something is going on. I met my closest friends through orientation and through other friends. I also met them at clubs, like tae kwon do and ritga. I am off campus, either in a 24 hour coffee shop or diner, or at a nightclub. I'm new to the campus, so I don't know traditions yet. Depends on the person and time of year, if it's after a stressfull period, everyone parties but if there's finals or something most students are focused on work. Greeks don't really hold any relevance on campus, I don't see the point of joining one at RIT. Last weekend I went on a double date to the mall and I-HOP for valentines day <3. You can always do whatever you like to do with friends, whether it's watching movies, playing videogames, or just hanging out. I go clubbing off campus, then go to either Denny's or Jay's. The mall too, and eating. There's also always Java's.

Walking from one side of the dorm to the other takes ten minutes. Everyone has their doors open playing guitar hero, watching new movies, playing music you've never heard, shooting stuff in halo, practicing some sport, or actually studying.

Sports: Hockey(cuz they are division 1) then Basketball. Thats all I really hear of but Im just one person. Organization: student gov and CAB (college activities board!!! they bring in cool people lik RIhanna and the likes) Clubs: there's too many but shout out to OAS(org. of African Students). oh maybe Campus crusade 4 christ (i blieve that's what they are called. This is based on the amount of advertisement i see) Im in organization of african students (we are incusive, you can be anything from anywhere). our most popular event is "Africa Week" and the show that it ends with (this year april 11th). I'm on the executive board and it's good practice for leadership skills. it's a cool club i guess. I'm a tinsy bi involved with ALAANA Collegiate (basically for minorities, but inclusive once again). They hold some killer fashion shows with major artists/people (this year Bobby Valentino)among other interesting events. Athletic events aren't really that popular here! They don't even have a football team which is another popular complaint. I'm pretty sure sports here would still be wack regardless... Guest Speakers are pretty good. The dating Scene? Are you guys serious! wow anywayzz thats another thing people complain about. There are way more dudes than chicks, and you'd think being a female I'd be happy but I personally don't find the dudes here attractive at all lol I know you're probably thinking it's because I'm black and want black guys... well sorry to dissapoint but you are wrong! I'm attracted to attractive peopl regardless of race and there are very very very (to the infinity) few attractive dudes here... COme here and see for yourself... this is the one things I've said so far that is NOT Biased lol. That said, I suggest not looking for anyone here because people usually get HUrttt from left to right. Relationships don't last too very long here from what I've seen heard, and if you gotta know been through. This is something you'll have to judge yourself though so I'll shut up now. My closest "friends" I met in clubs, academic programs(NOrth Star Academy), and my dorm. 2am teusday im doing work, or chilling with my friend eventhough i have work to do or should def be sleeping!!! Brick City Homecoming is a big one(very dry and boring in my opinion, shouldnt be called such a thing when compared to other schools homecoming. I cant think of any others right now so i guess thats a bad thing.. Parties: almost every other weekend if not every weekend... NOw are they good parties that is the true question, but then again Im not really in to parties Fraternities SOrorities are existent but i dont really follow them. I only know them by the colors they wear lol I only know a few by name... last weekend? good ques i have no idea, but i promise you it wasnt anything interesting. probably something that involved sleepin, a meetin (dat was fun), and music). on reg weekend tho im chillin with a friend (good fun friends keep you sane here.. that is if you can find any). saturday night: maybe there'll be some event like a concert (not too often tho) go do something off campus if you can find a ride that is if not better stay ya butt home n play spades pool or something like dat. off campus i go shoppin A LOT... this doesnt mean I like the mall, but there is this one store there that has some ok stuff. but yea shoppin is da most thing. eating is possible n movie is too, but only with a ride.

At RIT the College Activities Board (CAB) is a very popular organization. They are know for putting on shows featuring Bob Dylan and Jimmy Eat World. The Public Relations Student Society of America is very new at RIT and is working on starting a student run firm this spring. RIT hockey is huge and more alive than ever. Recently, Apple's Steve Wozniak came to speak and enjoyed a large turn out. Apple computers are common on RIT campus. The dating scene is alive and well, even with geeks and nerds. Students also date outside of their ethnicity which is nice. If students are awake at 2 am on Tuesday night, there are likely writing papers due on Wednesday. The highly anticipated Innovation and Creativity Festival this spring is going to be huge and really put RIT on the map as a University for Innovation. Last weekend my team mates met to finish out final project for this quarter. After presenting the project, our team met our professors at the local pub to celebrate. Many activities can be found at night that don't involve drinking. There are late night sports and games, and many students socialize at the campus coffee shop. RIT is currently a dry campus, too.

I find that the cultural groups are very popular. I know the Asian Culture group likes to put on fashion shows. I also see signs for the Women's Center putting on shows of the "Vagina Monologues." The most popular teams I'd say are the hockey teams. What is there not to love about an RIT hockey game? The excitement is such a rush, it's as if they're professional teams! There are numerous amounts of clubs that you can belong to. You can be in a club based on what religion you are, based on what country you're from, based on loving video games, RIT has it all. I recently was in the production of "On the 20th Century," the musical that was held the last weekend of January. That was the first musical RIT has put on in seveal years. I found it to be very enjoyable, considering I miss my theater days from high school. I'm also involved in RIT Singers. You can take it for a credit each quarter if you are an RIT student, and you can also join the choir if you're a member of the community. We have two elderly women in the choir, as well as tons of graduates. It's a nice group where we can congregate and sing our hearts out all together! When I lived in the dorms I always tried to keep my door open for people to walk in freely and to make friends and not seem like a hermit. When I wanted my quiet or study time, I shut the door and wrote a message on my white board that said I was either busy or studying and people respected that. Athletic events are very popular at RIT, especially hockey like I mentioned before. I came from a school that did not have a hockey team, and I have so much pride in RIT's hockey teams because they're fantastic and we have the bragging rights of moving up to Division I and kicking butt! (There's the school pride coming out!) There are many guest speakers that come. They usually appear in October for Parents' Weekend which is also known as BrickCity Homecoming. My freshman year we had Rudy Giuliani and Jon Stewart come the same weekend. Needless to say, I was in awe and beyond utter happiness. We also have performers come very frequently - I recently saw Rihanna and was blown away by her performance. The dating scene is what you make of it. Boys complain that they go to a school with too many guys, and girls complain that there are only video gamers that attend RIT. I believe that those students should remain quiet because if they researched their school properly, they could see the boy to girl ratio to begin with, and girls should know with a technology school, you're going to find plenty of student who like video games, I know I sure as heck like them! I met my closest friends through groups I was involved in: ROTC, RIT Singers, and also through my major. I also happen to have a very bubbly personality at times and when I get hyper I talk a lot, whether people want to listen or not, I make friends when I take the extra time to learn about them. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, I'm either studying really hard for a test, or I'm watching a movie and enjoying the fact that my morning class got canceled! Each year there are traditional events like Snow Balls and dances and galas put on by certain departments. People party a decent amount, meaning every weekend. I prefer to attend parties where I know the residents personally, for obvious reasons. I won't go to parties that I know are going to be busted by Campus Safety because that could jeopardize certain things in life I've worked hard to attain. Fraternities and sororities exist on campus, and you see the girls and boys wearing their jerseys or t-shirts and their huge painted signs plastered on sides of buildings, and their sidewalk chalk drawings, but there is no pressure to belong to one. I have seen all sorts of different members and organizations, and many of them work hard on breaking down the assumed behavior of frat boys and sorority sisters. Last weekend I attended a concert for RIT Singers, while I finished up projects and papers for finals week that is coming up, as well as going to work at a clothing store in the local mall. You can do plenty of things on Saturday nights besides drink, anyone who says otherwise is lying. RIT holds plenty of events, as well as making sure that students can attend things off-campus as well. Downtown holds plenty of different locations to explore like the George Eastman House, or different local museums or theatres like the Geva Theater or the BlueCross Arena. The dollar movie theater is one of my favorite things here locally because you can't beat the prices and it's less than five minutes from campus. I live off campus now and live between downtown and RIT so I have access to campus or a cool exhibit somewhere closer to my house in the opposite direction. I like to go to really unique cafes, restaurants, and mom-and-pop stores you can't find anywhere else.
