Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Marcel

I'm glad to be here. Rose-Hulman is the kind of place that has the resources of a large school, but the personal attention of a small school. Professors are very personable, some even hand out their home phone numbers. I've been invited over to profs' houses for lunch and met their family. With all the opportunities, it is hard not to be involved in campus activities. There is a lot of school pride, but we also like to joke around and make fun of ourselves, but all in good humor. Although Terre Haute is not thought of as an ideal college town, there are 3 colleges and over 10,000 college students. There is definitely stuff to do and places to eat around town, but it's hard to find when you don't know the area well yet. There is a bike trail along campus that goes into town, and there is a huge park just north of campus with lakes and trails and camping. Students typical complaints are that they are "so busy," but that's usually once they've layered on a few extracurriculars as well. Campus itself is very nice, but feels a little small. If you get involved with just a few things on campus, you won't even have to leave campus very often at all. Most people in indiana and the midwest know of the school, but i found that relatively few people on the west coast did. Some shop and restaurant owners give Rose students discounts at their stores, and the local police will occasionally let you off easy if you get pulled over and 'accidentally' pull out your Rose ID before your license. They like us here, we're a positive addition to the city.

Rose-Hulman's single best selling attribute isn't something you'll find on a viewbook, our website, or anywhere else until you get here. It means something different to everyone: for some people, it's the ability to wander to almost any residence hall room and join the Halo/Call of Duty/TV watching/homework/party that's going on. For others, it's the ability to refer to professors by first name (depending on the department), the fact that they know your name and check up on you if you're not making it to class or falling behind on the homework, and the ability to email them at 11:30 p.m. and get a response the same night. For yet others, it's our Greek system: think less Animal House, more of a true brotherhood/sisterhood.

Rose is a very special place, it is a small school with big school capabilities. The Professors all make it a point to learn the names of student in their classes, which is actually possible because of our small class sizes. The curriculum is extremely rugged though, classes are tough! The most important thing to learn is time management though. learning to balance classwork, a social life and all of the extracurricular activities that rose has to offer is key to survival.

I love Rose-Hulman (except maybe on test days). The school is the perfect size. I am always greeted in the hall by people I know yet I still meet new people at every party or organization. Since the school is only Undergraduate the teachers actually care about their undergrads. All classes are taught by PhDs who answer emails at 3 am and are friends with us on Facebook. I think my favorite thing about Rose is that everyone is so accommodating. Students can talk to anyone in any office and have their requests seriously considered and usually granted. I have personally had meetings with the Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students and gotten notes from the President of the school. Rose actually cares about it's students unlike some bureaucratic big state schools.

Rose-Hulman is a hard school, but that doesn't mean we don't have any fun! Many students find it a bit of a shock when they come to Rose. Oftentimes the students flew by in High School easily earning A's for their grades and at Rose they are forced to study for the first time in their lives. There is a huge and diverse range of activities at Rose that make it possible for any student to enjoy their time here ranging from DIII to Intramural Sports, over 80 clubs and a wide range of on campus activities. Terre Haute is not the nicest college town, so many students choose to live on campus or live in the "Rose Bubble", a world where only students and professors interact on campus. Many students fall out of current events and politics while attending Rose due to their focus on academics making college a fun experience. With only ~1900 the atmosphere at Rose can seem a little gossipy since most students know each other and everything that happens on campus, but there are plenty of opportunities to get off campus if people find it too constricting.

Sara

I love this place. The people are laid back and super nice, it's really easy to get help on homework or find someone to review for tests with, and there is a bunch of stuff to do both on and off campus.

One of the best things about Rose is the small community. At around 2000 students, you're going to get to know most of campus, and they'll get to know you. Rose is also very well known in the engineering world & has a very good reputation with employers. Overall, if you know you want to go into an engineering field and you want a small college with good job options, it's a great fit.

The best things about this school is the people. Because Rose-Hulman is solely a math and science school, everyone is going through the same difficult classes and are there to support each other. The people are so friendly and helpful, and also know how to have fun. The people here are proud of how hard they work, and there is a general respect throughout the community because everyone has gone through the difficult classes together.

Rose-Hulman is a very overrated school. Was my education top notch? Yes it was. Do any companies outside of Indiana know Rose-Hulman exists? Nope. If you intend on living in central Indiana your entire life, are not "social", and have extremely wealthy parents, Rose-Hulman is the perfect choice for you. If you want to enjoy college, have future employers recognize the name of your alma mater, and wish to live somewhere other than central Indiana; go to Purdue, Georgia Tech, or MIT.

Robin

The best thing about Rose-Hulman is the community. The campus is so safe and everybody knows everybody. Everything is based on the honor system and you have a lot of freedom.

Whitney

The size of the school is one of its best attributes. Profs will know your name, greet you in the hall, and always be available for homework help. Rose does a great job of taking care of its students, whether it be through support offices or extensive extracurricular programs (most of which receive funding from the school). The town is a bit small, but if you're persistent you can find some pretty cool stuff to do.

Whitney

Rose-Hulman is a family. No two students are the same, but we are similar and we care about each other. The students and faculty work together to make it the best environment there can be.

Alex

Rose is just the right size for me. It has a small-town atmosphere with culture thrown in. We have many different types of performances on campus that bring actors/actresses and musicians from around the world.
