What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Greek life is huge on campus. There are 8 fraternities and 3 sororities, not including the academic or service-based ones, but 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of campus is greek. I'm in a fraternity on campus, located about 3 minutes from class. There are a few off campus too that commute to school every day. Greek life here is definitely no Animal House, but we do have fun. The campus is not 'dry' but in the dorms they will pour out your alcohol if you are underage. Its a fairly relaxed policy though and nobody ever gets in huge trouble unless they are causing trouble. The administration is far less understanding when it comes to drugs. They will kick you out without much discussion. I would advise against having any drugs in the freshman dorms, although if you keep to yourself nobody will bother you. There are drugs on campus, but they are quite hard to find and if you aren't looking for them, you won't run into them. There are usually at least a few stoners in every fraternity, but far more people drink than smoke weed, kind of going along with the midwest stereotype. The dorms are really nice to live in, especially as a freshman. People always have their doors open and you can walk into anyone's room and ask for homework help or just hang out. Freshman floors are very tight knit and compete in intramurals together. If you're a freshman, you WILL compete in intramurals. They are extremely fun though, and the winners get cool prizes. On the weekends sometimes people go over to ISU, which is ten minutes down the road. There are parties there, and girls, and just different kinds of people than you would find at Rose, so sometimes it's a nice change. There are special performances in Hatfield Hall on campus several times a month including concerts, theatrical performances, comedy shows, famous speakers. Last year we had the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, before that Tommy Emmanuel. Michio Kaku spoke at graduation. Since the school is extremely old (1874) there are still old traditions such as our HUGE homecoming bonfire that the freshman have to build. People swim and fish in speed lake, and skate in the wintertime. Campus organizations always sponsor weekend events to keep people entertained (that don't involve drinking.) There is also usually a fraternity party each weekend, and as long as you know one person in the fraternity you can get in. They're usually not too exclusive. There are quite a few rose couples, but also lots of nearby schools if a rose girl isn't quite what you're looking for. There are nearby hiking spots, lakes, and outdoorsy things to do. There's a bowling alley, movie theater, rock climbing gym, mall, and all that good stuff closeby. Indy isn't a far drive, maybe an hour or less depending on the weather. People also do weekend roadtrips to Chicago, Louisville, St. Louis, Cincinatti. Those are all about 3 hrs away.

60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus is Greek. The student body does not separate themselves based on being affiliated or not but the Greek system is a large part of our campus and social life. Resident hall life is also a large part of campus. Students get close with their floors, sophomore advisers and resident advisers. There are also hundreds of clubs and intramural sports. If there's a club we don't have it is extremely easy to create one.

Greek organizations are prevalent on campus, making up ~50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body. Despite this there is little inter-fraternal rivalry and most students get along excellently. Clubs are a huge deal on campus ranging from Ballroom Dancing to Paintball. There is literally a club for everyone, even people who wish to learn to SCUBA dive or get in contact with their spiritual side. Sports are not big at Rose even though most students play one. There is not a huge fan base at sporting events. The campus is very safe feeling, with virtually no theft or dislike among students. Doors in residence halls are left open and Sophomore Advisers are help freshmen maintain a fun and well balanced life style.

Greek life on campus has about 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body. Athletic events are less popular, but intramural sports gets about 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus' participation. Everyone leaves their doors open, its really nice when you live in the dorms. The dating scene is tough for boys especially but for girls..."the odds are good, but the goods are odd"...

The Greek system is very popular, with eight social fraternities & three sororities. There are also numerous academic fraternities. Most students participate in intramurals, either with their residence hall floor, a fraternity, or independently. Students leave their doors open nearly all the time, and many close friends are made from the freshman residence hall floors. One of the most popular traditions is the homecoming bonfire, a three-story-high construction built by freshman and lit creatively the night before the homecoming game.

Anna

There are so many organizations, it's hard to pick which groups are most popular. It is a smaller campus, so many people are involved with sports. At Rose, there is great pride for the intimidating "Fighting Engineers," and most athletic events are generally well attended. Also, there is a larger percentage of students involved in Greek life. I personally am involved in Chi Omega, which has been a great way for me to meet women on campus and grow as a leader. Greek life here is not typical Greek life that you see on TV, which has a lot to do with the personality of the school. It is not "required" that students go Greek, but it is definitely something fun and helpful to try. Rose students are generally busy with homework during the week, so there aren't many parties throughout the week, but students will go out on weekends.

The school is roughly 60{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} greek so anyone who is even moderately cool is in a fraternity. There is a fraternity for everyone from a Van Wilder type (Fiji) to the comic book guy from the Simpsons (Theta Xi). Not joining a fraternity is social suicide and you are guaranteed to like the school even less than you would have liked it if you had.

Robin

There is an endless number of things to do at Rose-Hulman: so many clubs and events and facilities to use. Relations between guys and girls are very open and it's easy to meet people. Doors are always open and people are very friendly. There aren't very many girls here, so I would say that girls are more desired and are able to be very choosy. Most of the guys at Rose are protective of Rose girls. I generally stay on campus because everything I need is right here!

Whitney

Rose is a very open community for its students. Doors will always be open unless napping or cramming for tests. IM sports are wildly popular, especially among the freshman. A lot of students join Greek organizations and give time back to campus through service and charity events. The Student Government does a good job of organizing on campus events. If you're looking for something bigger, Indianapolis is only an hour away and you could easily make a weekend trip to Chicago.

Whitney

We have 8 fraternities at Rose and 3 sororities. We are about 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} Greek so these are a great way to get social, active, involved, and do some philanthropy work. We also have many athletic teams, intramural sports, and just about every possible club ranging from board game club to scuba to gun club to swing dancing.

Alex

There are lots of different activities on campus that you can get involoved in. We have a large homecoming celebration every year. Fraternities and Sororities are here on campus but they do not define the students that are involved with them.
