What are your classes like?

Ryan

most of my classes are large lecture halls as I am a pschology major, but for my music minor a lot of them are distance learning. Online classes are usually self paced which means if you're focused you can get them done in half the time and have a half a semester with less classes than you had before. Online classes are a must if you have the option.

Classes at Rutgers are a good balance of challenging and manageable. I feel like I'm learning a lot, but so far I do not feel bogged down by the course load. This past semester I took fifteen credits and had more than enough time to work as well. One thing I'd advise is to take it easy on the course load your first semester. This will make it easier to adjust to life at Rutgers and give you the free time to meet people and find your place on campus. You can always pack in a couple extra credits later on.

Once you choose your major, your classes are a lot smaller and you actually have the chance to get to know your professors. However, the Intro classes most freshmen and sophomores take can be very big and overwhelming lecture halls.

As an English major, most of my classes are amazing. My professors don't stand at the podium and talk at us but rather, they encourage us to discuss and push us to expand our thinking. The nice thing about English classes is that they're generally small which means, if you're like me and are afraid to say stupid things in front of people, your confidence to say something increases. Of course, you have to remember it's not always about the class you take, it's about the professors you get. Your classes are only as good as the professors are. I got lucky and I got some of the most encouraging, well-known, and smart professors who have pushed my skill of reading and analysis to a whole new level. The downside to my classes, TONS OF WORK and even that might be and understatement. I recently made the unwise decision of taking 5 English classes at once and let me tell you, don't do it. The general rule is don't take more than 3 English classes together but no one ever told me that before. The amount of reading and writing expected for these courses are intense. This is truly the first semester I have had to sleep at 2am (or later) almost every weekday.
