Saint Joseph’s University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Dominique

I would describe my classmates as kind-hearted, down-to-earth people that are willing to help their peers along the journey we are all on in a selfless, loving way.

Neanta

My classmates are beautiful and talented people that have tangible goals, aspirations, and passions from all different backgrounds and cultures; they also are willing to help those that are a bit sluggish to catch onto academic material and do not discriminate based on ethnicity.

Nick

At Saint Joseph's University we have a diverse student body, however one common trait I believe we all have is passion; whether it be passion for academics, music, athletics, health, or any other area of interest students at Saint Joseph's have a passion and drive about them.

Most of the students here are white, upper-class or upper-middle-class Catholics. However, the student body seems to be getting more diverse. Even if you aren't the "typical" St. Joe's student, you won't feel out of place. Most of the people here are friendly and accepting of all types of people. So far, I haven't met anyone who has experienced a problem while going here. Most SJU students are from the Northeast area (PA, NY, NJ, etc.). There isn't a typical style of clothing that students wear at SJU. While going to class, some people dress up, while others wear sweatpants or pajamas. There isn't a particular dress code that people abide by. The only common apparel that will be seen on campus is SJU gear. People often buy SJU apparel at the SJU bookstore, so St. Joe's shirts can be seen on campus everywhere!

Most students come from higher socioeconomic backgrounds but for the most part everyone looks like a regular college student-lots of sweatshirts and loungewear during the week. The business school students are generally more career focused upon graduation time and are involved in going to career fairs and on campus interviews. We have a few sororities and Fraternities and they dont have formal houses so you can find them at large tables in the student center during the middle of the day (11-1) Racially, the campus is not as diverse as it could be but the school is trying to work to make the campus more diverse. We have groups and clubs for all minority groups on campus and they work to host events on campus as well.

Krista

Almost all of the students at SJU are caucasian, and there are not many from lower income families due to the high tuition costs. It is a Catholic school, so many of the students are Christian, but definitely not all. We are actually required to take a religious difference course, and I am currently learning a lot in my Islam class. Most students come from middle or upper class families, but students of different types do tend to interact. Most girls get dressed relatively nice for nice. Most students are in the center and are not really politically active.

Matthew

These people want to get an education.

Frances

my classmates are reasonably helpful and career focused.

Kelly

Most of them have come from private high schools and their parents are weathly. A lot of them spend their time studying and working on class work. My classmates are very diverse as well. I met a boy from Saudi Arabia the first day of school, and he is not the only one. There are many kids from all over the globe to study different subjects.

Julie

My classmates at SJU are attentive, outgoing, supportive, cooperative, responsible, and respectful.

Rebecca

My classmates are hard working and down-to-earth.

Francis

Despite the competitive character of my classmates, most work well together, toward the common goal of success.

Alexis

My classes are awesome and probably the most well-rounded crowd of the entire campus.

Joseph

willing to help, fun, and chill.

Helen

Most people know eachother and are friendly. It is really a community feel.

David

The majority of students at St. Joseph's come from wealthy or local families and are very preppy and stuck up. There are a few different and interesting people, but the overriding culture is that of the endless pursuit of money while noone is personally shelling out any cash to attend the expensive university.

Kellie

They all have different levels of motivation. However all are helpful and amicable enough.

Leya

They come from very privilged and undiverse areas which shows in the ways inwhich they conduct themselves

Laura

Academically inclined, fun, spirited, and hardworking people.

Ann

Saint Joseph's is honestly the best place to go to college. It offers so many opportunities and the SJU community is amazing. There are so many activities to join and the classes are all intriguing. However, it is what you make it so be involved! Its a great way to make friends and it will make your experience so much better!

Vanessa

Preppy, upper middle class

Abby

My classmates are different but accepting at the same time

Ed

They tend to be very service oriented while also keeping an eye on school.

Ashley

My friends!

Christina

Split between those who are exceptionally bright and seeking discussion and those who are middlingly intelligent and coasting.

Kelly

Unfortunatley, the student body has almost no diversity. I wish the student body was a more diverse group. However, we do participate in various events supporting other groups.

Emmerson

The student body here at SJU is not that diverse, when you look around campion at the tables during free period you will see each sorority and fraternity at their particular table, the service kids sit together, we all get along with one another but stick mainly to our own tables and areas.

Brett

The types of students who sit in the caf are: the greeks, the athletes, the artsy people and the hawk rockers

Jen

I feel that at St. Joe's everyone can find their place. There are students from many different backgrounds and most people are open to all others.

Sarah

My experience with St. Joe's in the sense of the student body has been eclectic, but that's only because I put myself in situations where I met more people who are not exactly like me. I think that at St. Joe's it is very easy to slip into the groups of friends that are exactly like you. There are many people who went to high school together, went to St. Joe's together, and never went outside their comfort zone. I think that it is, however, possible to step outside this world at St. Joe's if you want to. It just requires the extra step. There are smaller communities outside the "norm" at St. Joe's. These include a LGBT community, and various minority groups, but they do somewhat stick to their own at St. Joe's. This might be out of a fear of some students, because as sad as it is to say, there are students at St. Joe's who are not that open-minded. St. Joe's also has an art community, but in the same way, it is very small. Most students at St. Joe's are from the Philadelphia area, New Jersey, or New York. There are a handful from Virginia as well. Most of the students come from Catholic high schools where the recruiting for a Jesuit school is strong.

Rachel

Because the school is expensive and Catholic, and also Jesuit and very liberal, there is a wide range of students, coming from many different financial, political, and social backgrounds. All of the students, while being somewhat different in their personal 'philosophies' get along well with eachother, and are open to learning about new people. Most students are very service oriented, are care alot about making a difference in the world.

Julie

Honestly, Saint Joe's is a mainly upper class, white campus, with many students from the tri-state region. Over the last four years, administration has been working on changing this, but as of yet, there has been little palpable change. However, I have seen an effort being made by both students and administration to make student differences more acceptable. Many student clubs have been working on becoming well-known and accepted for the minority students they represent.

Matt

The only thing I have to say about this is that the students who are involved in lots of service work on campus need to back the hell off and get off their high horses. It's incredibly annoying to have to listen to them make you feel like less of a person because you're not involved in a thousand different service groups on cmapus. Other than that, the student body is rather diverse and for the most part pretty well rounded.

melissa

people aren't as vain as i expected, but its basically the same crowd that goes to all the social justice trips or meetings. more and more students are becoming more active in social issues. st. joes kids are mostly from nj, pa, or ny. its time for the school to expand...lets get more kids from wa state!

Kate

St. Joes is getting more diverse, but is still majority middle upperclass white kids. For the surrounding states touching pennslyvania or north east coast. A lot of different student interact especially when people get involved with service. Their is amix of right and left wings all through out campus.

Jess

Most students come to class in a wide range of dressing. There's a bunch of people who rock the sweat pants and Uggs, then some people dress up more for class and will wear a sun dress when it's nice out. It's not a fashion show. If you want to wear sweatpants, no one will judge, believe me.

Brenna

It is very rare to walk into the cafeteria at SJU and see a student eating alone, or to go into the library and see a student working alone. There is truly a sense of community here, and students from every walk of life are able to find someplace where they belong, and other people who they can relate to. Most students are from the tri-state area, but really students come from all over.
