Saint Michael’s College Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Katie

The exact number of students. When asking the question it was always a rough estimate answer from 2,000-3,000 but attending the school it is much smaller than this, only about 1,500, on the high school side size.

Daniel

I wish I had known how much the tuition would be raised while I was here. I also wish I had thought a little more about how cold it would be. Other than that, loved it.

Lauren

Even though there is public transportation downtown to the shopping area, I wish I had known how hard it is to be without a car on campus. The bus service does not operate on Sundays, a day in which I have free-time and would like to take advantage of the stores and restaurants downtown. It is also hard to get a job off-campus if I do not have a reliable form of transporation.

It would have been helpful to know what I want to do with my future, so I could have been more prepared to choose a major and design my schedule in correspondence, but I suppose it is normal for students to come into college without a solid foundation for their future. Saint Michael's College has definitely helped me discover hidden passions (such as Gender Studies, which is now my major!), and these discoveries have opened up new possibilities for life after college.

Nicole

There is no need to be afraid of students in grades above you. Most students on this campus are extremely friendly and willing to help you out. Reach out to different organizations, clubs, and social groups, and you will not be disappointed. Don't declare a major until you have tried every type of class you are interested in. Most of all, be yourself. In college, it is a lot easier to find people with similar personalities to yours than in high school, where most students try to fit in.

Rachael

I wish I had known how to deal with the financial aid department better. They are not timely with sending out the award letters so that outside scholarships can be obtained.

Molly

I wish I had known how COLD it is! I grew up in New England, so I know what it's like to be cold, but it is definitely a different kind of cold here in Vermont. It is amazing though that this does not supress the attitudes of the students here. Even on a cold night, you can see people walking around campus (although very quickly and in very heavy jackets)

Andrew

How to roll a blunt.

Miryam

The French program is too small to offer any choice of upper level classes. The theatre program is too small to offer enough classes to those with specific interests, such as acting.

Chayna

How cold it gets in Vermont!
