What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Allison

To get the most out of a college experience, I would say go to a school that is not much different than what you are used to because you will feel more comfortable and be able to get involved easily. When applying to schools it is nice to apply somewhere that you know someone that is going to go there or is already going there so they can explore the school with you or if they have already attended they can show you the ropes, so you will meet a lot of people and have connections on how and where to get academic help if you need it. Get involved in activities that interest you and make life long friends. At any school you go to, appreciate this time in life and look forward to the future. College is a growing experience and it is something that only happens once.

Make sure you can make good connection with everyone on campus because that is ultimately what can help you succeed in classes and even after you graduate.

Kathlina

Follow your heart. Where ever you feel the most comfortable when you take the tour is where you should go. Consider the surrounding area for safety and recreation. Don't be sucked into going to a big school just for the party reputation, pick a school that fits your personality. When you finally decide, make as many friends as you can! Meeting new people is the BEST PART! But don't forget your time management skills, getting a planner is the easiest way to keep track of everything. College years are some of the best years of your life so have fun!

Entering college can be a scary experience for the new student as well as the parents of the student. However, this does not have to be the case. College is a chance to experience new surroundings, people, and activities that you may have never imagined yourself doing. Therefore, I feel that going into college with this ideation will help a new student not only adjust quicker, but to embrace the idea of beginning their college career. When selecting a college, students as well as parents should think realisticly. Not everyone will adjust to the big city life such as new york city. On the other hand the small town life such as Salisbury University may not fit the bill either. Attending college is about getting involved. Encouraging your college student to become involved in campus activities is the key to their success. Yes, academics should always come first, but truthfully you will tire yourself out quick if everyday is about class, class, and more class. Gain your education, fulfill your dreams, but remember your college years will always be remembered. You will make mistakes, you will feel defeated, but if you are aware of this you will do fine.

Christopher

Visit the school and get to know the campus.

Make sure that the school picked does not allow to much stress or to much partying for any student about to be on their own for the first time. Find a location with nice people good surroundings and enough activities to keep them busy. Find the school that best fits you where you know ou will be successful.

Students need to make the decision on there own with parent input because they are the ones going there. Look at everything not just at the academic part of the college, but the extra activities that are available to you, for ex. sports and clubs. Know what kind of learning you like, whether its hands on or not because that helps you know whether a small class size is good or a larger class size is good for you. Know where you ultimately want to go in life and make sure that college will help you get there in some sort of way. Make sure you also look at the surroundings; beach, city, etc. Make sure you are comfortable about the surroundings and nothing is too overwhelming. Parents make sure you support your children and help them get to the college that they really want no matter what needs to be done to get there. Parents and Students do not let the little stuff matter, money is only an object and you want the best for yourself and child so do whatever it takes to get them there. Students embrace college with everything it has to offer and have fun.

The best advice I can give would simply to take the tours of campuses and actually "take-in" the tours. Ask the questions that you want the answers to. Campus hosts will talk for an hour and fifteen minutes about why they love the university. They should also tell you why you or your student WILL love the university. Sure, you want to know about financial aid or how to schedule for classes. But, don't you also want to know what that group in the library could possibly be working on? Don't you want to know what your host does for fun on the weekends? Don't you want to know what the professors are really like? Campus hosts typically do their jobs because they love their school and are proud to attend, they won't lie to you and that's how you figure out what college is the best fit. To get the most out of the college experience, LIVE ON CAMPUS ... for atleast a year! Become active in clubs, talk to professors, play intramural sports like dodgeball or lacrosse. Build your character by building your resume. There's no better way to enjoy college.

My advice to students is to find a school that is recognized for the career you are choosing. This way the material you learn will have a strong and positive influence on your career. Also, choose a school you feel comfortable in. Make sure the size and environment is inviting to you. Visit the school and look at the students to see if they seem like they have similar interests to you. Finally, choose a school that has extracurricular activites that you enjoy doing. This way you can participate in something you love to do and meet new people at the same time. In order to have a great college experience you want to make sure you get the most out of the college career wise but are able to fit in with your surroundings as well as the other students.

Adam

Choose a school that has a strong academic focus on what motivates you and has a setting that lets you enjoy yourself whenever you need a break from the books.

Marshall
