I love my school. The classes and instructors are interesting, and since it's a state school, the tuition is very reasonable. The campus is gorgeous, and although it's not huge, there are plenty of student services, organization, and other activities to get involved in. The university sits in the middle of Huntsville, a small town less than two hours from Houston. Huntsville is truly a college town, and the community is very open and welcoming.

As a recent transfer student, I'm adjusting to the setting quite fine. I came from Texas Woman's University and the school was predominantly female with a strong focus on the success of women empowerment in every aspect, which I enjoyed but I wanted to study Psychology at Sam because of their program . When I first walked through the quad on the first day, I saw so much diversity and Greek life, which I really liked because there wasn't a lot of showcases on Texas Woman's Campus, so I was very fortunate that I got to witness that. Transferring to Sam Houston was a great move for me and I'm doing amazing in my program.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

I'm a transfer student from Texas Woman's University and it took me awhile to adjust to the setting from a majority predominant female college to a diverse college. As a sophomore transfer I really enjoy the student involvement on and off campus. They have many ways of how the student can get involved and also have programs that can help the student assimilate to a new area. One of the ways I felt more comfortable on campus was attending bible studies/services or joining clubs that were intended for my major.

It's a pretty great school, nice campus, friendly people, and nice little restaurants. I just wish there was more diversity within the campus, and smaller class sizes for the classes everyone needs to take. Also they should do better with the amount of professors that teach certain classes.

The school atmosphere is great and the academics are great. The cafeteria (old main) food could be better but their are many great, local restaurants around the campus. As long as you have a good group of friends and get involved in activities then you'll love Sam Houston. So far all my professors have been good too.

I really enjoy going to Sam Houston! I picked this school specifically because it focuses a lot on Law Enforcement and I want hope to go into this field someday. Sometimes there are times when I become very frustrated because the school charges a lot for parking but they keep most of the parking spots zoned off which makes it difficult to find a spot at all.

There are only three real things that generate revenue and bring people to Huntsville, Texas. The Sam Houston Museum, featuring more than any non-academic would ever care to know about the town’s hero. Texas State Penitentiary, called the “Walls Unit,” which draws in the families of the incarcerated and provides the city’s public schools with approximately 50% of their student population. And Sam Houston State University, an intellectual island fortress the townsfolk are apt to forget exists any weekend that there isn’t a football game. But the fortress only appears foreboding from the outside. Within is a burgeoning and forever bustling student population and professors who have elected to brave living in the surrounding city for the sake of working there. These professors are Huntsville’s unsung heroes, both dynamic and engaging, Sam’s students invest in their professors, who will stop in the halls or courtyards to talk or bring a regional dish to their class to heighten the experience. But if I had to pick a single local experience to encapsulate and expose the spirit of Sam Houston’s academic community, it is to be found in Texas Review Press, the university’s publishing house. In the spring semester of 2016, Dr. Paul Ruffin passed away, leaving only students and a single alum to run the Press. And yet run it does, competently, efficiently, and quietly. Sam Houston is a place of subtle efficiency, that enables and encourages its students to bring out the best in each other.

I love this campus. The people and the academics are great. It is also very beautiful. The only downside is that it is a little sketchy sometimes. The clubs that you can join are amazing. They are many opportunities to make life time friends at this school.
