San Diego State University Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Tiyana

We have so few basketball courts on campus, especially considering how important basketball is to us.

Marissa

I belive the worst thing about San Diego State is the large class sizes. Although class size depends on the demand for the class and your particular major, I believe smaller classes would allow students to get the most out of the class. In lecture classes of 120 students, it is hard for students to get one on one time witht the professor. All professors offer office hours to assist in homework or answer questions but those hours are still packed with students. Smaller class sizes would leave to a higher success rate at San Diego State University.

Nathaniel

Everything is great at San Diego State. The campus is beautiful, the teacher's are readily able and willing to lend a helping hand, the atmosphere is trememdously friendly and secure, and the students are some of the nicest and coolest scholars to go to a secondary school with. The worst part about my school, I would have to say, is the large amount of money it costs to attend it. However, I challenge you to cross that hurdle. Apply for scholarships, stay out of loans, work to set yourself up for this school. You won't regret it.

Tawny

The entrance process into the school was challenging. It could be that I was a transfer student and that there were a lot more steps and forms for me to submit. The overall process became confusing at times and even the school I was transferring from was little help to show us the way to correctly submit all the documents needed.

Jenna

Many undergraduate, particularly freshmen, allow their education to fall behind in priority to social activities. Typically these social activities are not positive, are always envasive and occasionally dangerous. This leaves a student, passionate about their education, at a loss and misfitted amongst peers.

Matthew

The worst thing about San Diego State University has to be undoubtedly how impacted we are. Being the only Cal State University in San Diego, it is the most afforadable and in many cases the most sought after school in the area. In many cases it is difficult to get the classes you need to get your degree. It is also rather difficult to get into your major, seeing as how most of them are impacted you are expected to keep a high gpa until your junior year just to get into your major's college at the University.

Madisyn

For me, paying out of state tuition is probably the worst thing. My family makes barely enough money to pay the bills, but not enough to pay for my school. This means I am paying my school with a loan of 35000 which I refuse to do next year without financial assistance. I applied to SDSU with a 4.0 and still got nothing. It discouraged me that kids from NJ who admittedley didn't work that hard in high school pay half what I pay even though I too am paying for school by myself.

roz

the large class sizes, becasue its hard to get attention from the professors sometimes

Jessica

You must be motivated and able to work with distractions. There are so many other fun things to do besides school that you need to be able to balance play and work.

brittney

Almost every major is impacted so it is extremely difficult to enroll in the classes I need to take in order to graduate in 4 years.

Armin

Sometimes people are too superficial but that's expected since it's abeautiful place with beautiful people.

Elizabeth

It has maintained a party school reputation based on past years, which hinders its recent academic advances and its increasing selectivity of prospective students

Kristen

The worst thing about San Diego State University is the overcrowding of students. Some lectures consist of up to 500 students. It may be harder for some students to learn when they cannot easily ask questions during class. Also, if some students cannot get the classes required for them to graduate because the classes filled up too fast, then that means they will need to stay longer and won't be able to graduate within four years.

Caroline

Getting classes is very difficult at SDSU because students register at the last minute and there are so many students who need classes. Students often have to crash classes to get the classes they need.

Richard

The worst thing about my school is the police. I feel like the police are way too harsh and look to ticket people for anything.

Dajanae

I think the worse part about my school is it is not that diverse, but it has more diversity than most schools.

Christian

Registering for classes is very difficult.

Doris

The amount of drug and alcohol abuse. Campus security should also keep unwanted people off campus.

Stephanie

The worst thing about the school is the status of my bank account while attending, and the fact that new fee increases are announced every semester.

Krysla

Transferring in as a junior, I am promised certain classes for my major. Then during my first quarter I learn that my major is being dissolved and that the classes I was supposed to take are now not going to be offered. I am very sad that I choose this school because of this complication. I also am dissapinted in the lack of financial aid I am recieving. I am struggling to do the best I can with what I have, but it just doesn't seem to be enough. I hope that changes are made soon.

Tanya

The worst thing about SDSU is the large number of students. You need become friends with the people in your dorms and get involved in some type of organization to help make the campus feel smaller. If you do not have this, the campus can seem so big and you can go an entire day wothout seeing any friends.

Terrence

nothing at this point

Hannah

The worst thing about my school is the partying. Many people mess around and give the school a bad name.

Brittney

Greek lifes influence on everything. Its slowly declining but it still is a huge part of our campus. I actually got a bid for a sority and turned it down due to how trashy some the the sororites tend to me.

Jennifer

My university is not well known for their sports teams. So there are rarely pep rallies / school spirit for sports events unlike other universities like USC, Purdue...

Roxanne

People think more about partying than having a conversation.

Devin

The worst thing is the poor level of academic competition and intellectual development.

Jaedeleen

The worst thing about my school are the furlogh days the professors must take, which ultimatley impedes the learning and education of the students.

Katie

It is an impacted school, so sometimes it is hard to get classes at the times that you prefer.

Chelsea

The worst thing about my school are the people who use college as an excuse to party. They are like diseases within the classroom. They do not come to class to learn, but rather to make fun of the people around them and yell out childish things as participation. They treat other students like garbage and demand to be respected themselves. I am passionate about my learning and despise it when others take education for granted.

Hoang

The worest thing about this campus is that some classes have to big of a lecture, so it makes it hard to have that one on one with the professor.

Katie

The availability of classes to choose from. It has always been difficult to get classes you want and/or need without crashing unless you are a graduating senior, or higher up on the registration priority. Especially now after the budget stuff. Sections have been cut, and classes are bigger. This makes it even harder than before to get into classes, and it causes several people to be delayed in their degrees if they can't crash.

Pauline

Perhaps thats its so easy to get into and a lot of times I feel like its selling itself short because we do have a great business program and foreign affairs program. It is also known as a party school, which I can't really deny because of our amount of frats and sororities that that is what several students do throughout the week. But I find that they can still suceed academically.

Jennifer

The worst thing about SDSU is the lack of a community feel. Most of the campus' population are commuters, so the aspect of living as part of a community is very small at SDSU. Most people living in the dorms do not know any others in other dorms, but I would love to see cohesion among the dorms as well as the campus population.

Daishanna

They do not offer much help for those students who ar not in activities and who are commuting to school. So my advice is toask as many questions as needed.

Samantha

The worst part about my school is the fact that i don't know if the major focus that i'm in is going to be available to me when it's time to apply for my major.

Kevin

The current budget crisis in the state of California has forced the university to cut back its classes and layoff professors, making it difficult to graduate in 4 years.

Avan

Workload of homework, because many professors believe that his or her class is the only one that you should be concentrating on. They don't take into consideration that learning the concepts is more important than just doing one homework assignment after the other. Sometimes 3 or more assignments are due in one week depending on the class. Not all classes are this way though.

Laura

crowded

Sara

The state budget cuts are horrible. It has affected so many of my friends and they have ruined my chances of being accepted into the Nursing Program at SDSU. We are paying more for our education, yet professors are being forced to take mandatory furlough days.

Kay

I love SDSU but I have found that people tend to form in groups by their majors or if their Greek which I find hard to socialize.

Caylin

Everything revolves around greek life. If you don't want to be involved, go to a different school.

Dorrin

I think our school is very big on sororities and fraternities, which I don't exactly like. Also I feel like our professors could sometimes do a better job of teaching us the material.

April

The worst thing about San Diego State University is that it has a horrible reputation of being a "party school." Playboy Magazine recently named it the top three party school. The fraternities and sororites definitely play a big part in that and the drinking and drug-using definitely has an affect on students' performance in class.

Victoria

San Diego State has a reputation as being a party school. Being located near a popular beach area gives many of the upper classmen the opportunity to go to bars and clubs. SDSU is waht you make of it. Like any campus in the U.S. there is going to be a party but there are many alternatives to parties if that isn't your scene.

Kevin

The distance from home. Its nice to be on my own and experiencing college life away from my family; but sometimes I wish I was a little closer to home so I could see them that much easier

Brent

The worst thing about San Diego State is its reputation as a party-school. It is true that we have the most attractive people, the best parties and the wildest rock concerts, but that is in addition to the encouraging and nurturing scholastic environment. SDSU conducts important research and produces intelligent thoughtful graduates, but the party-school reputation detracts from that.

Dustin

I think as much as the school's ideology encourages interaction among students, it is not so much encouraged in class projects such as group assignments. Also there is always much activity going on on-campus, but I don't feel I hear about all that goes on; I get essentially all my information via email and feel that I don't recieve enough enough updates and the schools online calandar of activities is insufficient.

Sheridan

It is becoming very difficult to get classes with budget cuts. and an increased demand for education. The solution has been to pack more students in each class or to go hybrid. Many teachers offer hybrid classes - part on-line, part in class lecture - to accomodate the student load. The large class sizes coupled with less interaction with the professors is not an easy transition for most students.

Cassandra

Lack of parking and quality off campus housing
