Sarah Lawrence College Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Alice

That we wear black all the time and are the freaks from your high school all round up into one college.

Kelly

Sarah Lawrence is lots of women wearing black and smoking cigarettes. the students at slc are all lesbian, hippi liberals who smoke pot and talk about philosophy. boys are unwelcome at sarah lawrence unless they are gay or theatre students. sarah lawrence students are atheist, post-modern post-religion post-gender binary post-sexuality hippis.

Torry

That we are all stuck up.

Jack

hipsters who smoke a lot

Jessica

Nothing can be said about Sarah Lawrence and its students other then we as a whole are different. It is bashed over our heads in publicity, but only because it is so true. We tend to be independent, highly motivated (not necessarily in the direction society claims is appropriate), and questioning. As a school we are stereotyped as hippy, extremely liberal, impractical and inefficient. As students we are stereotyped as emo, hippy, radical, argumentative, hyper-liberal, lesbian feminists.

Kristen

That everyone smokes and is pretentious... and wears ridiculous outfits.

Shawn

Many people assume that most SLC kids are white, rich, and totally weird. The "weirdness" might be universally true, but it is formed by all kinds of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We are of all shapes, colors, religions and sexual orientations.

Gabriel

The stereotypical Sarah Lawrence student is the type of person who didn't fit in well in High School. They were the weirdos, the theatre geeks, the "too-cool-for-school" hipsters or just plain different. That was high school. At Sarah Lawrence, we are artists, creative thinkers, and problem solvers. We all have our passions, and often they span a wide range of subjects.

Jessica

That all students are artistic freaks!!

Andy

The stereotype is that we're a bunch of rich kids who come here because we can't decide what we want to do, or else we just want to spend all our time doing drugs and experimenting sexually.

Erika

Besides the fact that people outside the SLC community seem to be slow to get the picture that it is no longer an all-girls finishing school, there is also a stigma surrounding the mostly-female leftist liberl arts school. The terms "hippie school" or "hipster college" are used in reference to us. People not affiliated with the college don't necessarily understand that we're serious students who actually do work hard at what we do. There's a misconception that we're all a bunch of delinquent artists who fool around and party in the city a lot, and that there's not much of a campus community. Within the student body, there are also a lot of stereotypes depended on, or jokes made about, like the apathetic druggie kids who are more into themselves than academia or any of the causes they claim to care about.

Torry

They are all hipsters. They are way too PC. They are lazy. They are rich.

Anya

1. It's an all girls school. 2. Everyone who goes here has no social life and loves to read and write 24/7. 3. Everyone here is gay.

Reese

I feel that the biggest stereotype about SLC students is that most of us were the awkward high school students that were focused on being literature nerds and studying he arts on the side. That we all choose to come to SLC to escape the persecution that was targeted at us from the jocks.

Dylan

People (and the princeton review) seem to think that sarah lawrence students are all weird smokers who think only in terms of indie bands. or that they are the kids that got beat up in high school. or that they are always rude to people.

Codey

Intelligent, gay, wierd, quier, isolated, abstract, "different", all girls, femenist, druggies, coke addicts. I, myself, am a straight male, and just the other week, while I was walking, holding hands with my heterosexual girlfriend, a car of local high school kids drove by and they screamed, "You Gay Faggot". But then again, stuff like that happens all the time.

Ashley

Sarah Lawrence is all girls (not so: actually about 70/30), the girls are desperate for boys (true to a point, but its not really that big a deal), we are pretty pretentious (academically, yes. in high school we were the know-it-alls and now we all just know everything. other than that we're pretty cool), all the guys are gay (not true, they are fashion conscious but hipster is a very good way to describe them)

Chris

Lesbian school, hippie, rich kids, into drugs, liberal

catherine

gay or lesbian, arty, hipsters, all girls school, where you go if you don't get into NYU

Sasha

disinterested, self-absorbed and self-important students

Tom

People think there are a lot of pot-smoking hippies and tough lesbians. Everyone assumes the men must be gay and that the straight girls are sex starved maniacs who will screw any straight man that shows up.

Rachel

Everyone here is gay or hippie or very liberal or a pothead.

Jesse

That Sarah Lawrence students are stuck up, cold, cliquish and mean. They are also really into hardcore drugs and partying all the time.

Eliza

Many people think that Sarah Lawrence students are hostile, artistic types who wear black and are only interested in discussing independent art films and postmodernist sculpture. We also have a reputation for being a bit snobby and pretentious.

Jessie

There are a few different stereotypes here, not horrible ones. We hear the "upper middle-class, sheltered, know-it-all," a lot. We've got the perma-fried hippies who don't bath, the socially akward, unfriendly rich kids, and the "hipsters".

Tristan

That everyone wears black (untrue), that everyone is totally nuts (true.... not necessarily a good thing) that we are different (untrue) aloof (true) introverted (true, but overcompensated for creating a very very strange social control battle) we are all bad at math (almost true) it is easy for guys to sleep with as many girls as they want (untrue) that you will have your first lesbian experience within the first month (untrue)

Peter

people think its still an all girls school, they think everyone is gay, they think were all drug users, and disturbed artists, and some think everyone is extremely rich.

isabella

rich, gay, abnoxious, intelligent

Jacqueline

That it's an all girl school with only lesbians. the men are arrogant and sleep with anything in a skirt

Annalee

We're hippies, largely queer, all weirdos in our former school, non-athletic artistic types who sit on the lawn smoking pot and playing guitar all day.

Aviva

'over-educated', 'pretentious socially inept rich white kids', a congregation of all the kids in high school who sat alone during lunch.

Nicole

Stereotypes include: everyone is gay; everyone is completely unique; no Republicans/conservatives allowed on campus; everyone's self-motivated and does the best they can, even without grades.

Clare

Sarah Lawrence students are very liberal.

Angelina

A huge stereotype is that SLC students are incredibly anti-social. Another is that the school is full of pretension hipsters. The biggest one I have encountered when mentioning SLC is that it is not only an all girl's school but that it is also "full of lesbians".

Royce

That we're all homosexual, we're all rich.

ellasimo

that students are 'alternative', liberal, gay, antisocial, controversial, self-righteous, question everything

Ian

Hipsters, smart, self absorbed, politically uninformed, artsy.

emma

that we are all apathetic scenesters who just do drugs and discuss our politics rather than doing anything about our convictions.

Jess

That they are rich white kids analyzing problems they will never face. That they do a lot of drugs. That all the guys are gay and all the girls are desperate. That they're emo-hipsters that got beat up in high school.

Elanna

That they're all homosexual, and unfriendly.

Molly

I've heard "goth" and "wear a lot of black", also "way liberal", "out there for the sake of it" and sex-deprived/-craved

Andy

Elitist, sexually deviant, genderbending, pretentious.

Chantal

A lot of people think Sarah Lawrence is a place filled with hipsters, hippies, and artists.

Tyler

The lines at SLC blur when it comes to stereotypes. Getting to know someone, you'll find a great deal you probably wouldn't expect from the way they dress and present themselves otherwise. Though this may be seen as a stereotype on its own, SLC is probably best known for for majority of the student body being drinkers and smokers, most of whom are mature about it.

Tate

All SLC students are trust fund babies. SLC students are self motivated to the point of being anti-social. SLC students are always either getting drunk or getting high. There is no sense of community at SLC--we are all too different to be a community.

Lauren

Most people think of us as "unique" to put it nicely. Most people really just think "weird." Either that, or we're all lesbians. Drug-doing crunchy-hippies who don't study because we don't take tests or have majors.

Rachel

pretentious, artsy, hipster, smokers, hippies, rich, "i want to change the world" mentality, vegan, "i'm so different from anyone else"; opinionated; liberal; loud (when it comes to voicing their own beliefs and protesting); eco-friendly; concerned with political and social causes; sexually-frustrated, sexually ambiguous, lesbian until graduation; alot of bi-, gay and gender queers; either very sexually active or sexually repressed; very free and open with their bodies; clicky

AMY

Rich, "alternative" but not really, self-absorbed and disconnected from the real world. Drug users.

Ryan

very wealthy, artsy-fartsy, liberal students who analyze everything philosophically and emotionally.

Andy

That everyone is different in the same way. Into the arts, drugs, nobody is religious Into the environment, not into sports
