What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Shannon

Go to LSU. Don't worry about money or out of state tuition. If there's a will, there's a way. Do the best you can do now so that you will receive more aid for college. It will be expensive. Don't mess around as much with parties and boys. They are far from worth it. The transition is not hard. Just go with the flow. Ask questions. Make friends. Create memories. Live YOUR life!

Christopher

I would advise my high school self as a senior to take college very seriously the first year, and after. Even if a course is not related to one's future career, it must be taken with the utmost care and treated dilligently. One's GPA must be maintained at high levels, especially when it is a major factor in one's finacial aid which is determining whether or not the future contains more college, or a drive-thru window. It is never prudent to risk the entirety of one's education and future over one or two courses. I would also advise myself to avoid distractions. It is a terrible idea to allow little personal distractions of the present to distract from the importance of other present challenges that may have a great impact on the future. Having a social life is one thing, but education is more important. This advice is difficult to follow, especially for somebody who had no social life to speak of in prior years and is only just entering into the wider world, but it is of exceeding import.

We all have had the thought of going back in time to give ourselves advice from years before where we had made either good or bad decisions that have shaped our life. I usually have this same thought all the time now because I believe my life would have been different if I had made other choices when I was a senior in high school. There are three things that I would advise myself to do. The most important advice would be to look for any available tennis scholarships and pursue them. This is one of the things that I wish I would have done when I was a senior in high school because it has always been my dream to become a professional tennis player. Besides that I would also tell myself to choose the right university to attend and to make sure I check everything I need to know in order to graduate as soon as I can. I didn't do this when I attended my first university and it is a problem to this date. The final reason is to be prepared for what the future might hold for me. It is not an easy road!

Ashley

The advice I would give myself is buy a stappler before you get to school. That is the one thing I forgot to buy and sure enough the first week of school I needed one. I would also tell myself don't sign up for 8 am classes. Yes you have high school early in the morning but remember that you aren't living with another person and you might want to stay up late and hang out with your friends, so getting up at 7:30 isn't as easy as when it was in high school. I would also tell myself that the first year of college flys buy so make lots of memories, wirte them down and have a good laugh because you wont't survive the first year without laughing.

Leticia

If I were able to back to my senior year in high school, I would tell myself three things: 1) you will be okay, it will be hard, but you will find a light at the tunnel; 2) there will be a ton of tension between you and the family, DO NOT LET IT GET TO YOU because it will cause a minor bump in the road and will also cause you to be stressed more than you need to be; and 3) do not hand out with your friends as much because you need to focus. If they are your friends, they will understand. Overall, just do the best you can. No matter how many times people have said that "it will be worth it," it really will. Nursing is an amazing career choice and even though you want to be a graphic design major, there will be a chance that you will treasure your choice in nursing. Just stick with Nursing because you become happy and you will not regret the change in major. Just stay strong and be you!

Joselena

If I knew what I know now I would like to tell my high school self to try harder, not to jump into everything at once, and to breath. In high school I took a few college level classes so the educational aspect wasn't the problem. When I graduated I moved out and started an instant family, I have a daughter and my boyfriend has a daughter as well so the family life was a little difficult to transition into all at once. With that being said, I should of worked harder during high school and even first semester, but I have learned over this past year that it will take a lot of time and persistent to overcome the obstacles of life and better my future for my children and I.

Andrea

Do not procrastinate, work hard because you are going to regret that you did not towards the middle of your college career. Do not regret anything or feel pressured. If you do, go see the school counselor sooner, most of the problems start out with mom anyway. She will always get her feelings hurt no matter what. Do not take it personally, never hold a grudge and when Andrew recommends someone to the apartment that you do not like, do not hold back and tell him how you truly feel. He will understand because in the end of that dilemma, he will cut them off completely. Also look up the 5 love languages for Taylor's sake. You will appreciate her and all of your friends from here on out.

Hey beautiful, a word of advice as you step into the world; grow up fast, and run while you can. Run away from all of what is holding you down. Run away from all the people holding you back, grasping you in hug they claim is full of love. Run toward school, it's your saving grace. School is what is going to keep you focused, it's going to change your life for the better. It doesn't matter how difficult math is sometimes, get tutored and get a degree as quickly as you can. Don't let anyone hold you back, there will be those people who you think love you, and who may be well-intentioned, but it's your life; make your own mistakes not others. Whatever you do, never stop learning, never stop seeking, and bettering yourself. Education is the first step to your future, to your success and to your independence. Stay youthful and beautiful, but grow up inside. Know that you are free when you have knowledge, and with knowledge nothing and no one will be able to hold you back.

Michael

If I could go back in time and talk to myself I would say, Mike be open minded in what ever happens. Be social, dont't be afraid to talk to professors and peers. Also get to bed early and get work done as soon as possible because it'll leave you more time to go out with friends and have fun. Give your 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} in anything and everything you do from small assignments to big ones, and even in sports. Maintain your health because getting sick in college is the worse feeling and the school doctors don't have much to do for you. Above all don't forget to call your family often they will always be there for you in any occasion weather its just to talk or if its a problem they will help, and it will make you less home sick in the long run.

Santos

Prepare yourself a lot better for something that will be very challenging. Also prepare better from the moment you are in a high school with a better GPA and just be prepared to be away from home. Everything will be fine if you just keep yourself focused!

Richard

If I could go back in time and talk to myself in high school senior year and knowing what I know now about college life and making the trasition, the advice I would give myself is to apply for plenty of scholarships, grants, and loans. I would give myself this advice because in college it is very expensive being a student. You have to pay for classes, fees, books, and other college related material. Also, unexpected occurences can come up like tuition fees increasing and budget cuts. Also, another advice I would give myself is register for classes immediately and don't wait until the last minute. Registering for classes is not easy everybody struggles to get into a class because most classes are a requirement class and there are very few classes handed out and very few teachers that teach it. Taking advantage of these advices will make my high school senior self very relaxed when they reach college because they will have plenty of money with all the scholarships, grants, and loans they applied for. Also, they will have all the classes they registered for because they thought ahead and took advantage of making their registration a priority.

Winter

If I could go back and talk to my high school senior self I would have a lot to say. I would start by telling myself to take different classes my senior year in high school and also in tech; classes that would benefit me once I entered college instead of some of the other classes I took. I would also tell myself that I need to start out at a community college then transfer to a college or university. Because I would get further, faster doing it that way rather than opposite. And most importantly I would tell myself to find a college or university that fits me that I want to go to rather than one that family pressures me into attending. These are all important things I wish I could go back and tell myself because it would help save a lot of hassle, and frustration that’s happened or is happening now.

Tiffany

I would not let anything interfere with my school work. No amount of pressure would have came between me and my goals. I would have love to know that time would fly by and to appreciate being a student and the learning processes. Staying focused would have been an understatement, I wish I knew that ten years ago when I graduated high school that I would be looking back and wishing I had put my all into college the first time around instead of struggling 10 years later. I wish I would have had the confidence to be the best student possible, dropped any relationship that hindered my progress and I wish I woud have stayed on course with my major/degree plan. Looking back, I'd definitely say that you are NOT giving up no matter what!

Cheyenne

I would let myself know that everything was going to be alright and not to worry about a thing. I would also throw a caring arm around my shoulder and encouraged to keep my chin up because the life change that I was about to experince was going to allow me to the person that I had always dreamed of being. I would share the "soon-to-be" experince that college had no limit to how far I could go to acheive my dream and that I would have the biggest support group behind me that I would soon meet when I first walked through the dorm doors of my new home.

Brad

Taking upper level classes in High School is an easy way to save money in college. Do yourself a favor and enroll in AP and Dual Credit courses. Learn a foreign language early. Having a specialized skill in the arts or athletics is an easy way to get extra scholarship money. Don't waste your time trying to be popular or partying, because who you are is more about what you make of yourself than about how cool people think you are or how much you can drink. College is expensive and it is too often wasted on young, unfocused students who do not know what they want to do with their life. If you have not figured out where your ambitions lie by the time you graduate high school, then I recommend taking a few years off of school before you start racking up student loans. As an older student, I came in knowing exactly what I wanted out of my collge experience. I took the classes I needed to take and got the degree that I am now putting to use, while only accumulating minimal debt.

Brittany

I would say, "Brittany, get involed early on, but do not over commit yourself. I tried to get involved in too many organizations at the beginning of the year and had to stop doing some of them because I did not have to time between studying, volunteering, and spending time with friends. Your professors are there to help and want to help you succceed. Do not be afraid to talk with them after class about a test or upcoming project. Also, emailing is a great tool to use to get a hold of your professors. Use it wisely and always be professional in your emails. Lastly , try to not get too stressed about school, but enjoy your time of volunteering, spending time with friends at the river, and the school work itself. This is the last time in your life you will get to just simply be a kid." That is what I would tell myself.

Michael

There are three pieces of advice that I would tell myself. The first piece of advice would be that high school friends are not going to stick but college friends well. The second piece of advice is to go out and try different thing. Explore all the possibilities that you can and do not let anything hold you back. And the last big piece of advice that I would tell myself is to have fun. You only get to experience so much during this time so make the best of it and have fun.

Logan

The advice I would give myself from knowing what I know now is very elaborate. First I would tell myself that college is completely different from high school and that time management is a necessity. In college I will have lots of freedom and time to do things that I didn't have in high school and that the way I management my time will either bring me success or failure. Another tip of advice I would give myself is that I have to constantly study to be successful. College is not like high school in the sense that I could look over my notes five minutes before a test in high school and still make an A. In college I have to deeply prepare myself for any test because looking over my notes five minutes before my test will bring me a failing grade. The final and most important piece of advice I would give myself is to get involved. College is ultimately what you make of it and by involving myself in groups and activities I will have a great and fulfilling college experience that I will remember for a lifetime.

Amanda

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior there are several pieces of advice I would give. I would first tell myself losing my friends from high school won’t be as bad as it sounds. You will stay in touch with the ones that matter and in college you will meet people who will show you what true friendship is, rather than taking advantage of you. I would explain to myself that the boy you spent your life dreaming of just might be one of the first people you meet when you move into your new room, and you will not feel lonely again. The last piece of advice I would give myself would be the most important. I would tell myself that while you may be quiet and shy right now, in college you will grow more than you ever thought was possible. You will learn who you really are and become a strong independent person who loves life and aspires each day. You will not only realize what is important to you but you will also know what it means to truly be happy.

Michael

The Army will be stressful, don't enlist in the Infantry, you will hate it! Also, college is pretty nice, but make sure you're more social. The best advice, though, is only take as many classes as you think you can handle. Do NOT listen to others who say you should take a lot of hours to get through your college career faster. Believe me, you will be hearing them complain come finals. It's better to take it slow and do good, even though you may graduate a year later, than to rush through it and be stressed all four years. Good luck and remember, college is a cake walk compared to the Army when you ship out on July 24, 2008. Bye bye, I must return to the future!

Mattie

Scraping by is not good enough. Making passing grades to stay eligible for sports will not get you anywhere in life. It's a rude awakening when you cannot get scholarships, or even admittance to an in-state school because of a sub-3.0 G.P.A. It's embarrassing, and so many doors close for you. Do not give up though. No matter what year you are, there is always time to turn things around! Hard work will show, and people will notice.

samantha

I wish that I could go back and tell myself that evrything would be okay. I wish often that I could have somehow let myself know that school wouldn't always be that place that I never belonged. I wish that I could go back in time and let myself know that soon enough I would have people that loved and supported me, now matter who I was. I wish I could tell me that I wouldn't be alone.

Noor

Learn how to work hard in life, focus on a clear future plan, and never quit trying to reach your goals.

Justin

Do not attend schreiner. The school is way too expensive and the atheltic department is a huge joke. Schreiner needs a new athletic director along with a new coaching staff. Find a better school that is better socially sound with a better athletic department.

Karli

If I could pull a Marty McFly and go back in time, I would tell my eighteen year old self to prepare for the unexpected and be ready for change. After spending two years in college, I've learned more about myself than I ever did in high school. Likewise, it feels as if I've lived a big life considering the short amount of time. I've made lifelong friends, lost people I truly cared about, found out I have a learning disability, learned what love really means and realized that God truly is everything. In so many ways, innocence defined my high school years. I was sheltered from reality and it wasn't until college that I stopped seeing the world as being cookie cutter. So if I could go back, I'd say “Be ready because your life is about to change. The way you see people and the way you see yourself will change. Don't be so afraid because there is nothing to be scared of. God is with you.” Then I would get into my DeLorean DMC-12 and hit 88 mph, praying I took my own advice.

Vanessa

The adive I would give myself would be to have studied more, focused more on school, taken the ACT more than twice, been involved in more school clubs and activities, listened to the adults around me, gotten tutored more than i did, took things seriously, and most of all got an 'A' in all of my classes. I thought Senior year would be just a breeze. It was not what I expected. If i had it to do over again, I definately would such all of the above. For everyone who is going to be a senior, I try and tell them that they need to focus as much as they can because it does reflect upon your future.

Alicia

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would definitely tell myself to focus. Senior year is not a time for goofing off, it is the time to prepare for college. I would remind myself to apply for scholarships and really determine which major would best suit me. While other high school seniors were out partying, it would benefit me to be planning for the year ahead. I would remind myself that even though high school seems incredibly important right now, it really is not. College is where life really begins. Every decision you make after high school will shape the rest of your life.

Keisha

Standing on the threshold of adulthood can feel terrifying. Your classmates are dispersing, your responsibilities are increasing, and everything in your universe is shifting before your eyes. However, you've worked to build a path leading to a bright future and the acceptance letter from the university you're holding in your hand is the light at the end of the tunnel. On your first day of classes, your nerves will be singing...but know this: you've been successful enough in high school to earn the university's faith in your placement as a member of their student body. You've proven--through the grades you've earned, the resume saved on your computer, and other various experiences you've had--that you are a capable student and that you have a drive to succeed. The courses may be harder and the environment new, but these abilities and experiences are tools you carry with you wherever life may take you...so use them, continue to hone them, and never fail to try new things and make new experiences that will carry you even further in life. The ability to learn from your experiences is the key to college success.

Alexandra

If I could go back in time and talk to the person I was as a senior in high school, some things would be different then they are now. Now that I know what and how the college life is like, I would have made a few better choices my senior year. Everyone thinks that your senior year is a basically the year you can blow off, well that is wrong. I do not know what anyone would make you think that. If I could go back, I would change the way I was during those last eight classes I had to take. I would have focused and become more organized than I was. Now that I am in college, it was such an eye opener for how much you actually need to focus. Being a college student is completely different than a high school student. After my first year of college, I know what I should do and how I can accomplish more in life. I wish I would have realized that when I was a senior.

Jessica

Jessica, I know that you are seventeen and your emotions are running wild. There are boys, feelings, emotions that you are letting hold you back from being actively involved in high school. My biggest advice, DO NOT TAKE SCHOOL WORK LIGHTLY! Work hard, get good grades, it all sounds like things you may hear from older, wiser folks but it is true. I know you have no one to really act proud of you but when you get into the real world, you will quickly learn that the only person you need to impress is yourself! When you get into college you will wish you would have made those grades. There are big intimidating people looking at your transcipts and judging you the minute they see that you got a D in algebra. It is never to late to make a change but the quicker you make that step to motivate yourself to try, to do things for your future, the sooner things will start to look up.

Jessica

I would give myself the advice to never give up. Times will get hard during finals time but stay focused because in the end it will all be worth it. Especially being able to walk across the stage and telling yourself you did it.

Isabel

If i could time travel back to my senior year in high school, I would first tell myself to not be afraid of change. Change happens whether we like it our not and most of the time it's for the better. I would also tell myself to use the tutors that are avaliable on campus when you do not understand or need help on a subject. As well as the other learning centers that are avaliable to you. I would tell myself to make the best of high school memories because you will miss those memories once they are gone. But most of all I would tell myself to have fun, make plenty of new friends, not to judge a book by its cover, and to just live life as it comes, because in college you will find some long life friends, and realize who you are supposed to be in this world.

Eloy

I would tell myself to work harder and to try my hardest and not procrastinate. Also, to take the time to apply for more scholarships and attempt to get prepared and schedule better.

Meaghan

I would tell myself to save up some more money before I left because college is expensive and being poor is no fun.

Tiffany

Know what path you want to be on before you start college or any other kind of secendary education. going into college blindly wont help you. have a goal in mind and go for it.

Cory

well first i would tell myself to take the college classes that my high school was offering. I would tell myself to make grades starting off as a freshman in college

Kara

Work harder and retake the ACT to recieve even more financial aid.

erika

When you are in high school, adults always tell you that you have to go to school, get good grades, and think about the future, but let's be real here. High school students are more focused on what they are going to wear that day than what college they will go to. If I could go back, I would tell myself that the lectures are true. I would tell myself to focus more on academics. I could have had better grades, but I did not see the point. Now, looking back, I realize how stupid this was. The potential was there, it just required some effort. Unfortunately, my naive high school self did not see this. I would go back and tell myself to suck it up, study, and make life easier for my future self. I would give the best motivational lecture anyone has ever given and whip myself into shape.

Allissa

I would go back to myself in high school and tell myself to study as much as possible. College classes are much more difficult than I had anticipated and my not knowing how to study has definitely hindered my GPA.

Kimberly

Be ready for a change in your life.

Jhadijah

I would tell the high school senior me to start getting as many scholarships as you can. Also I would have told her to tske more classes that challenge me like trigonometry and other classes like that to prepare myself for college level. I would have told the old me to keep focus on my work and just study a little more every night. There are many things I would have told the high school me but overall I focused on my work, I study for hours every day, and I tried to get honor roll as much as I could and I am proud of what I have accomplished so far is what I would of told the hgih school senior me

joshua

I would tell myself to not have any regrets because life is too short, and tell my past self to give hugs to those of my friends who wouldnt be alive today. The last thing I would tell myself is to try harder in everything I do.

Stefaney

Stefaney, Take the time to explore and open new doors, but always study first. Challenge yourself and never give up. Be yourself because you are different and people will love your strong and respectful personality. Times will be hard, but perserverance is the key to success. Leave guys alone; you dont need them and they will distract you. Be bubbly, kind, and always stand up for what you believe in; even if the world does not agree! The biggest advice I can give you is learn to forgive. You find christ again and it is this concept of forgivness and moving on that keeps you from lingering in the past. You are always loved no matter what you do!

Samantha

The advice I would give myself if I could go back in time would be to stay in high school because it is so much easier to attend college, as well as pay for college, if you go right after high school. There are so many more opportunities for students fresh out of high school, and I think if I would have completed high school, I could have gotten scholarships to attend any school I wanted to, giving me the ability to move somewhere new and meet new people, and quite possibly start my life with a new beginning.

Michael

It's easy enough, just do the same thing you're doing now and you'll be fine. Although I probably wouldn't choose to go back in time...

Ethan

Don't wait to go to college. Enroll as soon as possible. Go with what you're good at, computers. Engineering and accounting aren't really for you though you are adequate at them. Try to socialize more and try to get more scholarships and try to move into the dorms sooner.

Daniel

1. Practice studying. High school is fairly easy to blow through without much studying, but it's a skill that is necessary in college. If you can't study effectively, you're going to do poorly. 2. Practice time management. You're going to have a lot more free time in college than you did in high school, and you're going to have a lot more freedom. That's not to say, though, that you should ignore your responsibilities and spend that time slacking off. You're going to have a heavy workload, and you're going to have to spend more of your time working to maintain your grades. A corollary to this is that you need to learn how to say "No" when asked to go out. 3. Read. This will help you when writing research papers and offering input in class. Being able to draw on past events really legitimizes your point. 4. Get involved. If you feel bored, you need to get involved in a club. Whether the club focuses on photography, shooting, or community service, you need to find one that you enjoy. You'll make friends, and have a solid resume.

Andrew

Do not under-sell yourself, Reach for the moon and if you miss you will land amongthe stars, Be all you can be in college. If you are thinking that you can not afford to go to college, I am telling you that you can. Don't go to a community college to get your basics out of the way, then switch to a larger college. Do everything now to your fullest. Be all you can be. If you do not have enough money to go to college, then enroll and take out loans. I promise you that if you work hard, make good grades, and get involved extensively with your campus, scholarships will find you. I came from a poor family and I did not think I was going to be able pay for college. I told myself that if I work hard, I will recieve scholarships, and that has happened. Make new lifelong friends and make sure your new start to college is a good one. Also, it is very beneficial to join a Fraternity/Sorority. I was skeptical as a high school senior, but I did it, and I would have regreted if I didn't join.

Misty

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I advise myself to apply for more scholarships. I believe I made the perfect choice when picking Schreiner University because it is the place where I can be a disciple of God and live a christian life as I get an education. When making the transition from high school to college I would have advised myself to show the person I really am and not be afraid of what others might think of me. I would have also advised myself to not be so introverted because it is not always good. College is the place where I truly found who I am and it would have been nice to have known who I was as I transitioned from high school to college.

Andrea

Be prepared in High School before going into college. You have to go to class, get plenty of rest, and know when to transition from social mode into study mode. Do not slack off, because you will be paying this yourself. If you need help, get a tutor, and if your computer is not working right, go to the technology department. If you have a question, go to student success, Mr. Gordan Findly has candy and is always welcomed to help. I know getting a job and going to school is tough and at the end of the first week, your paycheck is gone, so do not blow it all because you will need some for school.
