What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Seek out good relationships with professors in your intro classes right away. It will spur you on to study harder for those you like and lay the groundwork for potential research or independent projects. Don't try to make friends with everyone or feel beholden to hang out with those whom you do not feel strongly connected. Don't bother trying to find a job right away as a freshman; employment opportunities will arise in your major department. Ask as many questions as you can think of - you are the college's customer so utilize its resources. And never disregard an idea as too fanciful or unrelated: write it down and sleep on it. Your sleeping mind will form new connections between the idea and your understanding.

What kind of person should not attend this school?

People seeking anonymity, conservatives, engineering track, and those looking for an urban experience.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The lack of science courses because it makes it difficult to complete a major in the natural sciences on time.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

Skidmore is a liberal environment that encourages its students to think outside the box. Skidmore enriches its students by having them take a variety of classes in different departments and encourages them to think how they can help the world.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell myself to take classes that interest you, no matter what department they are in and to go out and have fun, becasuse college is about experimenting academically and socially.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I brag how I know a majoirty of the campus and everyone feels the same. This gives me a sense that Skidmore is truly a community where anyone can say hi to someone else.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had known how many extra-curricular activities Skidmore provides so that I would have better managed my time (specificially when I did my homework) so that I would have been able to participate in more extra-curricular activities

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My advice is for the student to visit as many colleges as possible- large, medium and smaller schools in order to get a sense of the school's atmosphere and if they could see themself being comfortable studying and living there. Visiting a school that you may have previously been uninterested in could drastically change your opinion of the college.

Describe how your school looks to someone who's never seen it.

Skidmore 's campus is beatiful, its student body ranges from ecclectic to mainstream, and its faculty is accessible because it wants to see its students succeed; when you're there you have to try to be bored because there is always something to do.

Describe the students at your school.

Every student that I have met at school has been motivated; beyond the desire to excel academically, most students are driven by a desire to learn, to progress, to embetter themselves and their surroundings.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The college search is an exercise in being engaged with the world around you. Before you apply to college, you must be aware of your options: research schools online, ask teachers and graduates, see what people have to say about different schools. Visiting is both exciting and tedious; though all tours sound alike, they give you a reasonable sense of a school's size and dynamic. While on campus, keep your eyes and ears open- see how students dress, what they carry (books? footballs?), look at the posters hanging around campus. Sit in the campus coffee shop and observe the campus pace. Ask students for directions, see how they respond. Visit different sized schools in contrasting settings. The cardinal rule is to keep an open mind; it's difficult to discern what you want when you don't know what's offered. Once you have chosen a school, it is imperative to understand the opportunities available to you. It is only once you are aware of what is possible that you can begin to take advantage of it all. Wherever you are whether it be in the classroom, at the gym, in casual conversation or intense debate, do not disengage.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Skidmore is an academically strong liberal arts college with a strong amount of interest in the arts (music, studio art, theatre, english, etc.). Many students chose to double major in an art and a "practical" major such as a Chemistry and Music major, or a Business and Studio Art major. Skidmore puts an appropriate emphasis on interdisciplinary study, which allows the students to creatively approach a problem or situation by utilizing resources from every department.

Describe the students at your school.

Skidmore's student body is generally comprised of white, middle to upper class kids from the Northeast and West. Apparently Skidmore is doing a better job at creating more racial diversity- and I'm starting to see it more and more on campus. Most of the students are intellectual and pursue some sort of art (music, studio art, english, etc.). Skidmore isn't entirely comprised of artists, however- possibly even half of the students here aren't involved in an art.

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

To some extent, there is a considerable minority at Skidmore consisting of wealthy marijuana smokers, but the majority of the student body is intelligent and intellectually diverse.

What are the academics like at your school?

Perhaps the most worthwhile thing at Skidmore. Class work usually ranges from two to six hours a night, depending on what type of classes and extracurriculars you're facing. Class sizes are very small (my largest class was 30, and that felt big), and many professors exercise an attendance policy. My most stringent policy was loss of credit if I missed more than two classes. A lot of professors also require class participation, so you can't come to class asleep or hungover- you'll probably fail. The English department is one of the most solid departments in the school. There many accomplished writers who consistently publish in popular journals, newspapers, and genres. Professors are extremely accessible. This is definitely a reason to come to Skidmore. I recently was invited over to dinner at my professors house with a group of my friends- we ended up talking for hours.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Skidmore's social scene is a little weak. Don't come here if you're expecting bangers and ranging frat parties. There are a good number of off campus houses that function like fraterities, but most of the partying is done in Skidmore's Scribner Village and Northwoods. There are also a good number of students who hit up Saratoga's admirable bar scene. Most of the student body works during the week and goes out at least two nights during the weekend (thursday-friday). There are a good number of clubs and student organizations. Get involved in one of them here as a good way to make friends.

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Pot-smoking rich, artistic hippies.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Choosing a college is a tough process, but it's also really exciting!! When choosing schools to look at, i'd suggest you stay very open to all possibilites. and visit lots of schools! These is nothing more helpful in decsion making than being on a college campus and observing the students and professors while getting a feel for the campus and surrounding town or city. If you have any friends attending the schools you are looking with, it's also really helpful to visit with them to get a really honest understanding of that college dynamis. Overall, the college experience is absolutely amazing. Make sure to take advantage of the educational oppertunities, but also enjoy the social components. A healthy balance of work and fun is key to surviving the stresses a college workload may bring. Generally speaking, I think people can be happy nearly anywhere so long as the make the best of it. So keep an open mind, and stay true to yourself when looking for the perfect place for you. Remember that everything happens for a reaosn, and sometimes a second, third or even fourth choice school may end up being the best place for you!

If your child makes a descision that you don't like, and you are funding their college experience, cut them off. They aren't babies anymore. If you make your kid pay for college themselves, back off.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

It is one of the best Liberal Arts Colleges. It is best known for its Theater program as well as Music and Fine Arts. Many students on campus also favor the English classes. The campus is gorgeous and it is in a great location. The school is accomadating all around.

What isn't unique about my school? Individuality is cherished and welcomed. The campus and school as a whole are there for us to utilize in our own creative ways.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Truly stay true to who you are and your needs because if you follow what your guidance counselor thinks is best for you or what your parents want for you, you won't have the best college experience and thats what you want because college is the place for you to grow and learn not just material for your future and your career but about yourself.
