Skidmore College Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Melissa

Rich and white. The kids are mostly cool though - they just need some diversity lessons.

Stephanie

Skidmore's student body is not very diverse. Most of the students come from middle to upper middle class families and live in the northeast. I do not think any kind of student would feel out of place at skidmore, because the campus is very accepting and preaches diversity. Most students dress very casual when they go to classes. Students are politically aware. Most students are liberal, but the republican group on campus does get some very influential people to come speak such as john ashcroft.

Erin

I would say that compared to most campuses this is a fairly accepting student body. Every once and a while I will hear an ignorant comment but it is not the norm and usually catches me by surprise. There is some racial diversity and there is complete acceptance on that, but we could really use to have more racial diversity on this campus, that is one thing that I would like to see the administration work on. There is pretty good meshing of the students that are already here, it is normal to have some divisions of racial groups but for the most part there is a lot of freedom socially, it is not a clique driven campus.

Kris

The student body remains fairly homogenous...white, middle- to upper-class...there is so much concern with the idea of diversity, and bringing diversity to Skidmore that is has become kind of a joke. The minorities who are at Skidmore make themselves heard...they are very involved in clubs and orgs.

Jordan

I don't have any experience with any diversity group on campus. I think most students would fit in at Skidmore except for possibly a Bible-belt evangelical neoconservative. Different types of students do interact but there is a separation. In the dining hall, the international students and many minorities tend to eat at the counter, jocks eat at one side of the dining hall, and everyone else eats on the other side. This is not set in stone but it is definitely a pattern worth noting. Most students are from the East Coast and everyone has different financial situations. Some students are politically aware but most don't seem to care. Skidmore is predominantly liberal.

Nik

The student body is extremely liberal, very open, and very accepting. In my experience, everyone is very nice and considerate, and sitting down to have a conversation with somebody you don't know is not at all uncommon.

Cameron

our campus is WAY more diverse than people think - we have few bias related incidents, but we have an incredible program to address those issues if and when they take place- students love to interact with each other, but generally jocks stick with each other- most of the skidmore students are form the northeast but we have a significant amount of people from the west coast - also my suitemate is from iowa and my best friend is from sierra leonne.

Most people don't know and don't care to know about social issues. Most people would rather get drunk. there is absolutely no school pride on campus. most lean left.

Leah

Skidmore has everything from hippies to artists to geeks to "bros" on campus... still, if you're not willing to accept other people regardless of how they dress and judge them solely on what they look like, you shouldn't be here. Students tend to be pretty well-dressed in my experience, but I spend time mostly with the artsy types, so that probably has a lot to do with it. Most students are from the east coast, north of Washington DC, with a LOT from New York State. Everyone is politically informed, and tends to be quite liberal, though the Skidmore Young Republicans are very vocal despite their small numbers.

melissa

Hmm. Ok, in terms of student body, it often feels pretty homogenous. There has been a push for more diversity since I've been at Skidmore, yet there definitely feels to be a predominance of Caucasion, Northeastern students. There are also definitely more women than men. There have been incidents where people of other races, sexual orientations, and religions have felt threatened at Skidmore, yet I should stress that these were isolated incidents and for the most part the school community was very satisfied as to how these situations were handled. Overall, Skidmore is a very welcoming, accepting place. Skidmore I think is known for having an accepting, LGBT community. I am very proud to say that Skidmore students and faculty have open minds and open hearts to people of all different sexual orientations, races, ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic statuses, and political views. In terms of how people dress, I think there is a big emphasis on individuality. There are preppy kids, scene kids, hipster kids, hippie kids, outdoorsy kids- really every kind of kid you could imagine. I think individuality is definitely a big thing at Skidmore. In terms of what kids wear to class, some get dressed up, some don't. Mainly its pretty laid back, with kids wearing skirts, jeans, kakhis, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. When its a busy time of year, kids wear pajamas. No big deal.

Connie

Skidmore is a very open and liberal community. We accept pretty much everyone, but I think very conservative or extremely religious people may feel out of place. They would definitely be accepted at Skidmore, they would just be in the minority. Most students wear sweaters and jeans most of the year because its cold. However, once it is warm out people are in sun dresses and skirts. Different types of people do interact-I'm a science orientated person and my best friend here is an art person...its not uncommon. Most Skidmore students are either from the northeast or California. The middle upper class is the most prominent social class. Students are very politically aware, but there are enough of them that they do not feel the need to shove it down anyone else's throat. They are predominantly to the left.

Caitlin

--a student who is super conservative and close minded towards certain liberal ideas would feel out of place here --students are politically aware but they are sometimes inactive about it, we have a lot of focus right now on the environment's problems --new york, massachussetts, east coast, west coast, not really central or south --students are mostly liberals

Emily

The majority of students are white and upper-middle class. While there is a strong minority group, they tend to stick together. The community is very accepting of LGBT students, but I haven't run into as many as I expected I would. There seem to be two relatively distinct groups. The athletic kids, and the more artsy kids. The groups definitely overlap, but the differences can definitely be seen as well. Most students are from the Northeast, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut. But there are a good number of internationals and people from other parts of the country. People are politically aware, but not very active. I wish there was more political activity on campus. If you are not liberal, you are in the minority which is made up of probably about ten students.

Rachael

The student body is very politically and socially aware, and if you are not when you come here, you soon will be. I would say Skidmore is a liberal campus. People are very open with each other about what they think, and discussions about race, religion, LBGT issues, etc. are extremely popular. At the same time, there seem to be no "cliques" on campus. I have friends from all differnet majors, backgrounds, and races. There is a good community of "jocks" or athletes here, but they are not the typical kinds. They could be a studio art major with a biology minor. People are just interesting. I am always intrigued by how unique each person is.

Kay

There are a lot of white students. The minority students generally hang out together, but there is not a lot of prejudice on campus. Skidmore is highly accepting of LGBT students. A student from a city who is of middle class (or lower) economic status (like myself!) would feel out of place here. Lots of kids seem spoiled, rich, and immature. They are from the suburbs and lead sheltered lives. Some students wear sweats to class. A lot of girls dress up, not in high heels but in the latest "indie" trend. I would say Skidmore students are pretty trendy. Most Skidmore students are from the Northeast or California. Most students are upper middle class (or higher). Students are typically liberal, politically.

Reese

Upper class, mostly white, northeasterners. The school is trying to get more diverse and failing. The dining hall is segregated, with jocks sitting on one side and everyone else on the other. It is much more competitive to get in as a girl, so the boys are largely dumb compared to the girls.

Matt

Skidmore is not a diverse school and there are many of the same type of people everywhere. I believe white people make up 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the schools population if not more and for a very small school that is almost everybody.

Nick

The student body loves to help. It's what moves them.

Eliza

Skidmore is white and Jewish. That's all there is to it! haha They make a big deal about diversity on campus and stuff, but there's no covering the blaring Caucasian-ness of campus. The minorities all hang out together. In the dining hall (d-hall), library, dorms, the ethnicities can be seen in flocks. Pretty much, the sports teams travel in groups as well. And there is a select few of "really artsy" kids with multi-colored hair and auspicious facial piercings who all hang out with each other. But this is not to say that the groups don't mix--they do sometimes. Everyone's a democrat. 'Nuff said.

Kate

We're a primarily white campus with little racial diversity. Most everyone is very nice and polite. The blue side of dining hall is for the bros and atheletic girls. Half of the red side is for cool people and hipsters; and the other side is for the weirds. I spend a lot of time just hanging out in dining hall. Different types of students interact a little. We're all from different places around the world. The campus is predominantly liberal. No one would feel out of place at Skidmore, we have a good spectrum for people to fit in.

Amanda

Skidmore loves diversity- maybe too much. There are some rabid people who are willing to take any comment and turn it into an attack on some marginalized group, despite the intent of the speaker. Luckily, these people are a minority. There are also some dumb rich kids who probably only got in because their parents could pay full tuition, and there are ignorant people as well. Overall, though, kids here are genuine, crazy, intelligent, and fun to hang out with. The school definitely has an artsy component, but most anyone could find a place here and be happy.

Danielle

We're very diverse in our passions, and in every other sense. Half of campus seems to get dressed up for class, the other half wears sweats. Anything goes, basically.

Alicia

Most of skidmore's student body is upper middle class and white, there is some diversity but it isn't overly present, and there isn't a ton of integration between groups Social groups at skidmore are very small and outside of the classroom there isn't much interaction between these tiny groups.

Ryan

there are so many different groups and people around skidmore its hard not to find somewhere to fit in. however the student body is split between athletes, the artists, the hippies, the heop students, the rich upperclass jewish students, and the environmentalists. i woudl think that if one didnt fit in with any of these groups or overlap between it would be hard to feel in place at skidmore. many students i believe hail from the city and/or massachusetts. students on campus are very poltically aware of whats going on.

Mitchell

The huge majority of students are white and upper middle class or higher. Most students are politically liberal, but not very many people vote. If there are four tables in the dining hall, one is Asians, one is athletes, and the other two are mixtures of all the other types of students. Most students are from the New York City area or New England.

Nico

Most students are from New England. The dining hall is super modern and the food is pretty decent, there is always SOMETHING to eat--which is pretty surprising for such a small school. You are as involved as you want to be. Conservative/Republican students are precious because there are so few.
