What is your overall opinion of this school?

Smith College gives it's students a small yet highly diverse environment in which to learn a plethora of new skills - the variety of which is up to the individual student because of the open curriculum. Opportunities range from sports, academics, and cultural to travel, study with professors, and innovation in a certain field. All the while students have access to pretty spacious (as college dorms go) rooms, good food, and all that the town of Northampton has to offer.

My first year was amazing. Then my mother got sick and I took a break. When I returned everything seemed different and college was unwilling to work with me on things.

Smith by a Smithie

Smith is a truly distinct college. Every student here is motivated and engaged in the campus community and people are striving for academic excellence. Although there is a lot of stress put on working hard both in and out of class, the weekends give students a chance to relax and unwind. Although there are no blowout parties on campus, there are small parties. Being within 30 minutes of University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire College does give students at Smith the unique option to take classes and participate in social events at other schools.

Smith College

It's small, which prevents a lot of variety in class offerings, but what's offered is good and you can always take classes in the Five College System. Class sizes are usually small and you can get to know your professors. Most students are very friendly.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

The stereotype of Smith and a women's college in general is that everyone is a major feminist and a lesbian. This isn't true at all. At Smith, everyone decides who they want to be and what they want to do, and Smith is the best place for everyone to explore and express who they are.

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

A large part of the population is involved in activism of some sort. You'll catch many Smith students hanging out in the downtown Northampton area because there are so many different places to eat and shop.

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

The stereotype of students at Smith is that everyone is a lesbian. While every definition of one's sexuality and gender is accepted, by no means is the whole school comprised of all one type of person. The atmosphere we have here facilitates acceptance of all people. For those of us who identify as straight it's more of a lesson in inclusivity.

What's unique about your campus?

The energy with which people express themselves and talk about their passions. People come to Smith either because they have something they are eager to study, or because they are passionate in everything they do and are looking for a way to channel that energy, which I think is amazing.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Don't be afraid to try things and quit. You don't need to be an expert in something to try it for the first time; you don't need to stick with something that you hate out of a misplaced sense of loyalty. Forgive people more. Educate people more. You are going to meet people whom you admire, who intimidate you. Remember that they are people, and don't take so long to seek them out. They're waiting for you to make a move, too. Be firm with yourself and commit to habits that you know will make you a better person and a better student. Take criticism gracefully, and advocate for yourself--but only when it's worth it. Remember that you chose to be here, and that you love it. Be out and joyful and unrepentent.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Advice to My Former Self The best way to prepare for college in particular and for life in general involves finding a cause that is close to my heart at an early age and working to address it through volunteering. Don't wait until the summer before my senior year to work with a local organization whose mission is to help those afflicted with aids. Start early so I can learn at a younger age how incredibly satisfying it is to help make a difference in the lives of others - to know the warmth of giving back to the community. Start early on the path that will lead to a major in college of social justice. Have the work convert my vague appreciation of how lucky I am to the knowledge of the incredible blessings in my life. Use the opportunity to meet those whose life is so different than mine, whose challenges far outweigh mine. Learn early to enjoy those who can teach me so much about the larger world. It is great preparation for college, where the range of people I meet will expand tremendously. Yes, begin early down the path to help myself as much as others.
